A novel photo-switchable polymer P-PHT containing diarylethene (DAE) and tetraphenylethene (TPE) moieties and a triazole linker in the repeating unit was synthesized to study the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior of TPE with both the open and closed forms of DAE in P-PHT with high water contents. The photo-switching phenomena of DAE (from open to closed forms under UV-irradiation) in P-PHT were prominent in organic solvent (THF), high water contents (at 90% H2O) and acidic conditions. Upon UV-irradiation of P-PHT at 90% water content, the AIE of TPE was completely quenched via an energy transfer event from TPE to cyclized DAE. Interestingly, the rare monomeric emission of TPE was first discovered by the photo-cyclization of DAE in P-PHT compared with the AIE behavior of TPE with the open form of DAE in P-PHT with AIE favorable conditions of high water content (90% H2O) and acidic conditions.

A series of diazepinomicin derivatives [5,10-dihydro-4,6,8-trihydroxy-10-[(2E,6E)-3,7,11-trimethyl-2,6,10-dodecatrien-1-yl]-11H-dibenzo[b,e][1,4]diazepin-11-one derivatives] were synthesized and evaluated in vitro for their growth inhibitory activity against the human carcinoma cell lines. The results indicated the anticancer selectivity of this kind of compounds Based on the results, preliminary structure-activity relationships were discussed. The synthesis of the target compounds was achieved using 5,10-dihydro-11H-dibenzo[b,e][1,4]diazepin-11-one derivatives and (2E,6E)-1-bromo-3,7,11-trimethyl-2,6,10-dodecatriene (trans,trans-farnesyl bromide) as key intermediates. The title compounds thus formed included a diazepinomicin analog (I) and related substances.

Owing to the compact size, immunity to electromagnetic interference, high sensitivity and real-time monitoring, optical waveguide sensors based on a refractive index change have become an emerging approach for smart sensing in the internet-of-things system. For this purpose, the synergetic efforts in material engineering (sensing materials) and optical engineering (waveguide design and fabrication) are both indispensable. Here we report a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) waveguide with photochromic dye-doped polymer sensing films for UV light detection. Firstly, UV light induced photochromism of a synthesized dye DAECHO in solution and in the solid state is investigated to understand the relationship between their structure and optical properties, especially the photochromism-induced refractive index change for waveguide sensors. Then the MZI structure is designed and simulated to optimize the performance of refractive index sensing. Following the standard microfabrication process of double photolithog.-development, the device is fabricated with a DAECHO doped polymer as a sensing cladding material for UV light detection. The evanescent sensing of MZI is performed to detect weak UV light from 10 μW cm-2 to 100 μW cm-2 at 365 nm. Our demonstration of MZI for UV light detection indicates the potential of portable and highly sensitive UV light waveguide sensors for real-life applications.

The cytochrome bc1 complex (cyt bc1 or complex III) is a promising target of numerous antibiotics and fungicides. With an aim to indentify new lead structures for the bc1 complex, a series of novel inhibitors were discovered from the natural product karrikinolide for the first time. Extensive screening results suggested variable inhibitory activities of these compounds against succinate-cytochrome reductase [SCR, a mixture of respiratory complex II (SQR) and complex III (the bc1 complex)], implying the essential role of a 4-substituted Ph group for the high potency. Exceptionally, compound 12g showed excellent inhibition potency having an IC50 value in the sub-micromolar range, demonstrating its higher potency than the com. control amisulbrom by over two orders of magnitude. Further experiments inferred that these newly prepared compounds mainly target the bc1 complex. Seemingly, this work has presented a new lead scaffold for further development of bc1 complex inhibitors.

Various sulfur ylide complexes of Pt were prepared by the phase transfer catalysis (PTC). Thus, reaction of Pt(PR3)2Cl2 (R = Me, Ph) in CH2Cl2 with [S(O)(CH3)3]I under PTC/OH conditions give complexes {Pt(PR3)2[(CH2)2S(O)(CH3)]}I, which contain a bidentate double sulfur ylide. With Pt(dppe)Cl2 [dppe = Ph2P(CH2)2PPh2] as starting material, a similar product was obtained. But when Pt(dppm)Cl2 [dppm = Ph2PCH2PPh2] was treated with [S(O)(CH3)3]Cl under PTC/OH conditions, an unexpected product {Pt(PPh2CH3)(PPh2OH)[(CH2)2S(O)(CH3)]}Cl was obtained. This compound contains a bidentate double sulfur ylide and two unsym. phosphines resulting from the base hydrolysis of dppm. Compound {Pt(PPh3)2[(CH2)2S(O)(CH3)]}I, was subjected to an x-ray diffraction study.
