Ecological assessment was performed in different thermal springs located in the Ethiopian Rift Valley area: Gergedi, Sodere, Halaba, and Gara. We assessed the habitat conditions, physicochemical characteristics, and macroinvertebrate composition at 12 sampling sites in four thermal spring systems. The physicochemical properties of the water samples varied among the sampling stations. Temperature ranged from 38.5 to 90 degrees C among the 12 sites. Dissolved oxygen, which is essential to aquatic ecosystem normal functioning, was not detected at three sampling sites. Chironomidae was the dominant invertebrate taxa at all sites, and when the water temperature exceeds 42 degrees C, it becomes the only taxon in the thermal springs. Macroinvertebrates were absent in thermal springs where the water temperature is 52 degrees C or higher. Other diversity measures were not sensitive enough to discriminate sampling sites regardless of physicochemical variabilities except the richness and abundance. Water temperature, chloride, pH, and phosphate were identified as major determinants of macroinvertebrate richness in the Ethiopian Rift Valley region.

We investigate a basic system of water, sodium chloride, and iron ions. Simulations pending on the local metal ion concentration for current densities show that the modified model works; steric effects become important for large current densities and the formation of a resistive gel layer is responsible for the reduction of water at the electrode. We observe that the electrostatic potential resulting from space charge effects is not affected by implementing the different species sizes. Further research is needed to explore the applicability of industrial simulation tools.

Heterogeneous and large PIC micelles were formed by the simple mixing method. They collapsed by salt addition and were reformed by the dialysis method to form uniform and smaller PIC micelles. This is considered to be because a uniform and smaller micelle is formed to reform in equilibrium state by dialysis. The temperature response of PIC micelles formed by the simple mixing method and PIC micelles reformed by dialysis showed nearly the same temperature-transmittance curves. In this study, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) with a final temperature of 1000 degrees C at a heating rate of 10 degrees C/min and rapid pyrolysis are used to analyze the catalytic pyrolysis effect of CaCl2 and NiCl2 on lignite samples, mainly including pyrolysis reaction analysis and tar product distribution. Ciprofloxacin drugs are a second-generation fluoroquinolone highly prescribed medication against various bacterial infections in human and aquaculture practices. These drugs are chemically designed to persist in the body long enough to achieve target objectives. Extensive usage has resulted in ciprofloxacin becoming a ubiquitous contaminant in the environment. Unfortunately, the ecotoxicological profiles for ciprofloxacin are scanty. This study was aimed to assess the ecotoxicity of ciprofloxacin at environmentally relevant concentrations (1 mu g/L, and 1.5 mu g/L) to a cultivable fish Cirrhinus mrigala. Responses of antioxidant enzymes, histological anomalies, and inorganic ion levels were studied. SOD activity in gill, liver, and kidney tissues was elevated in ciprofloxacin-exposed groups when compared with the control group. CAT activity was predominantly decreased in ciprofloxacin treated groups relative to the control group. GST activity in the ciprofloxacin treated groups was increased (except kidney tissues [Treatment I (1 mu g/L)], and gill tissues fifteenth day) significantly (p < .05). The LPO level was elevated in the ciprofloxacin treatment groups throughout the study period (except Treatment II (1.5 mu g/L) tenth day in kidney tissues). A series of histological anomalies were noticed in the gill, liver, and kidney tissues of the ciprofloxacin treated groups. Ciprofloxacin exposure caused a significant decrease of sodium, potassium, and chloride levels in the plasma of C. mrigala. The UiO-66-NH2@Ru was prepared from ZrCl4, 2-amino-terephthalic acid (TPA-NH2) and [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+) by one pot reaction through solvothermal method, which exhibited dual emission signals at 445 and 595 nm from single excitation of 350 nm. The corresponding two peaks showed different responses to melamine, that was, the obvious enhancement at 445 nm and the slow decrease at 595 nm, thus achieving the on-off ratiometric fluorescence detection. When the concentration of melamine was in the range of 0.27 to 110 mu M, the ratio of fluorescence intensity F-445/F-595 had a good linear relation with the correlation coefficient R-2 = 0.995 and the detection limit of 90 nM. The synthetic UiO-66-NH2@Ru probe implemented rapid determination of melamine in real sample of milk powder with high sensitivity and selectivity. Compared with the reported carbon dots, quantum dots, metal nanoclusters, nanocomposites and other fluorescent sensors, MOFs-based sensor have broadened the application of nanomaterials in melamine detection for the first time. This study also demonstrates the Zr-based MOFs as a platform to encapsulate fluorescent dye for constructing ratiometric sensor in the determination of melamine is feasible and exciting.

Effect of calcium chloride (CaCl2) on gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) accumulation pathways in fresh-cut pears was investigated. Taken together, it can be concluded that CaCl2 seems to be more effective to GABA shunt, while LaCl3 treatment mightily stimulate GABA shunt and polyamine degradation pathway.

Antifogging films are essential in many areas, such as eyeglasses, windshields, goggles and so on. In this work, a transparent antifogging film was successfully prepared on glass by spin-coating a mixture of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and iron (III) chloride hexahydrate (FeCl3.6H(2)O). Anoctamin1 (ANO1), a calcium-activated chloride ion channel (CaCC), is associated with various physiological functions including cancer progression and metastasis/invasion. ANO1 has been considered as a promising target for cancer therapeutics as ANO1 is over-expressed in a variety of cancers including glioblastoma (GBM) and inhibition of ANO1 has been reported to suppress cell proliferation, migration and invasion in GBM. GBM is one of the most common and aggressive cancers with poor prognosis with median survival for 15 months. Lack of effective treatment options against GBM emphasizes urgent necessity of effective GBM therapeutics. In an effort to discover potent and selective ANO1 inhibitors capable of inhibiting GBM cells, we have designed and synthesized a series of new 2-aminothiophene-3-carboxamide derivatives and performed SAR studies using both fluorescent cellular membrane potential assay and whole-cell patch-clamp recording. We observed that among these substances, 9c and 10q strongly suppress ANO1 channel activities and possess remarkable selectivity over ANO2. Unique structural feature of 10q, a cyclopentane-fused thiophene-3-carboxamide derivative, is the presence of benzoylthiourea functionality which dramatically contributes to activity. Both 9c and 10q suppress more strongly proliferation of GBM cells than four reference compounds including 3, Ani-9 and are also capable of inhibiting much more strongly colony formation than reference compounds in both 2D colony formation assay and 3D soft agar assay using U251 glioma cells. In addition, 9c and 10q suppress far more strongly migration/invasion of GBM cells than reference compounds. We, for the first time, found that the combination of ANO1 inhibitor (9c or 3) and temozolomide (TMZ) brings about remarkable synergistic effects in suppressing proliferation of GBM cells. Our study may provide an insight into designing selective and potent ANO1 inhibitors aiming at GBM treatment. (C) 2020 Published by Elsevier Masson SAS.

A series of PVC films stabilized with novel antimicrobial itaconimido aryl 1,3,4-oxadiazoles (D1′-D4′), at absence or presence of various concentrations of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), was prepared by a conventional solution casting method. XRD, SEM as well as TEM were used for ascertaining of incorporation and well dispersion of MWCNTs into PVC matrices. Additionally, the efficacy of stabilization has been proven via a decreased rate of color alteration, mechanical properties change and chains cleavage for PVC.
