BACKGROUND Tenvermectin A is a new avermectin derivative that has good insecticidal and acaricidal effects. In order to study the resistance of Plutella xylostella to tenvermectin A, a sensitive strain (SS) and a laboratory-selected tenvermectin A-resistant strain (RS, 33.57-fold) were used to evaluate cross-resistance and fitness costs as well as to determine the resistance mechanism. RESULTS There was no cross-resistance with common pesticides except for moderate cross-resistance with cypermethrin (resistance ratio = 10.26-fold) observed in RS. In the four typical resistance-related genes, expression of GluCl (4.86-fold), ABCC2 (3.85-fold), and CYP6 (2.94-fold) in RS were significantly promoted, but expression of GST was not. CONCLUSION High suitability related to tenvermectin A resistance was observed in RS, and it was found that the developmental stages of RS were significantly shortened and the survival rate of females was reduced. In addition, the mechanism of resistance to tenvermectin A may be regulated by the glutamate-gated chloride channel, ATP-binding cassette transporter, and MFO. In general, the study of resistance and biochemical mechanisms can provide beneficial and rational information for the management of resistance in P. xylostella.

The main goal of this study is to modify cotton as cellulose-based fabrics through cationization to improve its dyeing with acid dyes and its antibacterial. Quat-188 was applied to cotton to prepare cationized cotton, overcoming the negative charges between cotton and acid dyes during the dyeing process without using any electrolyte via the pad-dry-cure method. Then the cationized cotton fabrics were treated with the prepared silver nanoparticles to improve their antibacterial properties. The untreated and treated cotton fabrics were dyed with two acid dyes Acid Brilliant Blue PB 100% (acid blue 25; AB25) and Acid Metanil Yellow MT 100% (acid yellow 36) at concentrations of 2%, 4%, and 6% of by exhaust method. Colour strength, color, and washing fastness of untreated and treated cotton fabrics were studied. Antibacterial properties of fabrics were also evaluated against S. aureus and E. coli by using the disk diffusion method. Dyeing properties showed that the treated cotton fabrics significantly improved color strength and fastness properties (light, washing, perspiration, and rubbing). Also, the antibacterial properties of treated cotton fabrics showed antibacterial activity towards tested bacteria. This study reveals that modified cotton fabrics via cationization with Quat-188 and AgNPs have multifunctional properties from their ability for acid dyes and their higher antibacterial activity towards Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria that is can be used in many applications.

Contamination of foods with Listeria monocytogenes is a frequent occurrence that results in expensive recalls and on occasion, deadly outbreaks of foodborne listeriosis. Biofilm production is thought to play a key role in the persistence of these bacteria in food processing facilities. To date, research on L. monocytogenes biofilms has predominantly involved pure cultures grown under conditions that do not represent actual food processing environments. In nature, multiple microbial species comprise biofilm communities that develop under constantly changing conditions. This study investigated changes in the characteristics of biofilms harbouring L. monocytogenes (Lm) when in the presence of two different commensal bacteria, Lactobacillus plantarum (Lp) and Pseudomonas fluorescens (Pf), commonly isolated from ready-to-eat (RTE) meat products. Using CDC biofilm reactors, four different strain combinations (Lm monoculture; Lm + Lp; Lm + Pf; and Lm + Lp + Pf) were grown on stainless steel (SS) and high-density-polyethylene (PE-HD) coupons following a dynamic 12-day regimen of simulated meat processing conditions (SMPC) that exposed cells to periods of nutrient cycling and starvation. Viable numbers of L. monocytogenes 568 (Lm568) in pure culture biofilms at the end of the regimen were 5.8 and 6.4 log(10) CFU/cm(2) on SS and PE-HD, respectively. In dual cultures with P. fluorescens (ATCC 13525), Lm568 biofilm cell numbers rose by 1.0 and 1.8 log on SS and PE-HD, respectively. Enhanced L. monocytogenes numbers were also observed in the triplex biofilms with Lb. plantarum and P. fluorescens (ATCC 1024) (1.4 and 0.5 log for SS and PE-HD, respectively), whereas the same trend was not observed when L. monocytogenes was paired with Lb. plantarum. Imaging biofilms by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed important architectural changes to the biofilms related to the specific strain combinations. Integration of L. monocytogenes cells into P. fluorescens biofilms significantly (P < 0.05) increased the survival of the pathogen to benzalkonium chloride. These results demonstrate the important role other commensal bacteria play in aiding the survival of foodborne pathogens; hence these factors must be considered when evaluating the effectiveness of biofilm mitigation strategies. Background: Khaya gum is a bark exudate from Khaya senegalensis (Maliaecae) that has drug carrier potential. This study aimed to formulate and comparatively evaluate metformin-loaded microspheres using blends of khaya gum and sodium alginate. Khaya gum was extracted and subjected to preformulation studies using established protocols while three formulations (FA; FB and FC) of metformin (1% w/v)-loaded microspheres were prepared by the ionic gelation method using 5% zinc chloride solution as the cross-linker. The formulations contained 2% w/v blends of khaya gum and sodium alginate in the ratios of 2:3, 9:11, and 1:1, respectively. The microspheres were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, entrapment efficiency, swelling index, and in vitro release studies. Results: Yield of 28.48%, pH of 4.00 0.05, moisture content (14.59% +/- 0.50), and fair flow properties (Carr’s index 23.68 +/- 1.91 and Hausner’s ratio 1.31 +/- 0.03) of the khaya gum were obtained. FTIR analyses showed no significant interaction between pure metformin hydrochloride with excipients. Discrete spherical microspheres with sizes ranging from 1200 to 1420 mu m were obtained. Drug entrapment efficiency of the microspheres ranged from 65.6 to 81.5%. The release of the drug from microspheres was sustained for the 9 h of the study as the cumulative release was 62% (FA), 73% (FB), and 80% (FC). The release kinetics followed Korsmeyer-Peppas model with super case-II transport mechanism. Conclusion: Blends of Khaya senegalensis gum and sodium alginate are promising polymer combination for the preparation of controlled-release formulations. The blend of the khaya gum and sodium alginate produced microspheres with controlled release properties. However, the formulation containing 2:3 ratio of khaya gum and sodium alginate respectively produced microspheres with comparable controlled release profiles to the commercial brand metformin tablet.

Cellulose is a renewable, biodegradable, biocompatible, and sustainable material. A bamboo cellulose-based nanofiltration membrane (LBL-NF-CS/BCM) was prepared with a combination of layer-by-layer assembly and spraying methods. The combined layer-by-layer assembly and spraying provides a scalable and convenient process concept for nanofiltration membrane fabrication.

The present study investigated ultraviolet-induced in situ gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) coupled with loopmediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) for the point-of-care testing (POCT) of two major infectious pathogens, namely, Coronavirus (COVID-19) and Enterococcus faecium (E. faecium spp.). In the process, gold ions in a gold chloride (HAuCl4) solution were reduced using trisodium citrate (Na(3)Ct), a reducing agent, and upon UV illumination, red-colored AuNPs were produced in the presence of LAMP amplicons. The nitrogenous bases of the target deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) acted as a physical support for capturing gold ions dissolved in the sample. The high affinity of gold with the nitrogenous bases enabled facile detection within 10 min, and the detection limit of COVID-19 plasmid DNA was as low as 42 fg mu L-1. To ensure POCT, we designed a portable device that contained arrays of reagent chambers and detection chambers. In the portable device, colorimetric reagents such as HAuCl4 and Na(3)Ct were contained in the reagent chambers; these reagents were subsequently transferred to the detection chambers where LAMP amplicons were present and thus allowed convenient sample delivery and multiplex detection. Owing to the high sensitivity of the in situ AuNPs, simplicity of portable device fabrication, and rapid colorimetric detection, we strongly believe that the fabricated portable device could serve as a kit for rapid POCT for instantaneous detection of infectious diseases, and could be readily usable at the bedside.

Microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) was used to treat several sandboxes filled with naturally occurring beach sand collected from Atlantic Beach, Florida. A surface-spray/percolation technique was used to treat these sandboxes where a relatively high-concentration bacteria solution and high-concentration calcium chloride/urea solutions were applied directly to the boxes’ surfaces. Several different treatment combinations were tested whereby bacterial optical density, bacteria/urea/calcium chloride volume relative to pore volume, and bacteria/urea/calcium chloride ratio were manipulated. Treated sandboxes were tested for erodibility using a pocket erodometer. In addition, sandboxes were dissected after erosion testing to examine crust depth. Results showed that higher optical densities, higher bacteria quantities relative to void volume, and higher bacteria quantities relative to urea led to lower erodibility and greater crust depth. When MICP constituent quantities were maximized to give the best erosion/crust-depth results, erodibility improvements began to approach what may be considered adequate erosive resistance. Further investigation is required to better classify this behavior more quantitatively.

In this work, we report a family of co-halogenated two-dimensional hybrid perovskites (2DHPs) based on phenethylammonium lead halogen ((PEA)(2)Pb(Cl/Br)(4)) in which the organic cation-site (PEA) is substituted with halogen at the para-site, namely the formation of 4-halophenethylamine (X-p-PEA) (X = Cl, Br; p: para-site). The organic cations are regulated by introducing halogen ions at the para-site of the benzene ring to promote the structural distortion of the lead halide octahedral inorganic layer. Furthermore, (X-p-PEA) causes a shift in the energy band distribution of 2DHPs. In this case, the photoluminescence competition of free excitons (FEs) and self-trapped excitons (STEs) changes the microscopic relaxation process of excitons. In addition, we found that (Br-p-PEA) can increase the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). At the same time, we regulate the halogen-site of perovskites from lead-chloride perovskites (LCPs) to lead bromine perovskites (LBPs), achieving emission from white light to blue light. Therefore, the co-halogenation regulation strategy of organic cation-site and halogen-site can effectively regulate the photoluminescence wavelength and improve the PLQY. In this study, an ultrasonic and heat-assisted liquid-liquid extraction method combined with deep eutectic solvent-based dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction procedure was developed for the extraction of four phytosterols from cow milk butters. The analytes were determined by gas chromatography-flame ionization detector without derivatization. Initially, the sample was transferred into a falcon tube and placed into a sonication bath adjusted at 50 degrees C. Afterward, ethanol was mixed with the butter and the mixture was sonicated. After centrifugation, the ethanolic phase collected on top of the sample was withdrawn. After addition of a few microliters, ethyl (methyl) ammonium chloride/pivalic acid deep eutectic solvent, the mixture was sucked into a glass syringe and injected hastily into deionized water. The turbid solution was centrifuged and the sedimented phase was removed. Then, it was contacted with sodium hydroxide solution to remove the extracted fatty acids. The proposed method presented high enrichment factors (340-425) and extraction recoveries (68-85%), low limits of detection (0.51-1.3 ng g(-1)) and quantification (1.7-4.3 ng g(-1)) and acceptable relative standard deviations (<= 8.4%). The analytes contents of several cow milk butter samples were extracted and quantified with the developed method and the results were compared with ISO 23349.
