Aims In this study, benzalkonium chloride (BAC) microcapsules were developed for surface disinfection purpose and were evaluated against Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli biofilms. Methods and Results Microcapsules were prepared with two different strategies: uncomplexed BAC-microcapsules (UBM) containing BAC and maltodextrins, and complexed BAC-microcapsules (CBM) containing BAC complexed by pectin and maltodextrins. Conclusions Overall, results demonstrated that microencapsulation enhanced the antibacterial activity of BAC against L. monocytogenes and E. coli biofilms. Significance and Impact of the Study The application of such BAC microcapsule-based delivery systems can improve surface disinfection procedures and reduce the required BAC concentrations and the related cytotoxicity of this antimicrobial compound.

Background: Khaya gum is a bark exudate from Khaya senegalensis (Maliaecae) that has drug carrier potential. This study aimed to formulate and comparatively evaluate metformin-loaded microspheres using blends of khaya gum and sodium alginate. Khaya gum was extracted and subjected to preformulation studies using established protocols while three formulations (FA; FB and FC) of metformin (1% w/v)-loaded microspheres were prepared by the ionic gelation method using 5% zinc chloride solution as the cross-linker. The formulations contained 2% w/v blends of khaya gum and sodium alginate in the ratios of 2:3, 9:11, and 1:1, respectively. The microspheres were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, entrapment efficiency, swelling index, and in vitro release studies. Results: Yield of 28.48%, pH of 4.00 0.05, moisture content (14.59% +/- 0.50), and fair flow properties (Carr’s index 23.68 +/- 1.91 and Hausner’s ratio 1.31 +/- 0.03) of the khaya gum were obtained. FTIR analyses showed no significant interaction between pure metformin hydrochloride with excipients. Discrete spherical microspheres with sizes ranging from 1200 to 1420 mu m were obtained. Drug entrapment efficiency of the microspheres ranged from 65.6 to 81.5%. The release of the drug from microspheres was sustained for the 9 h of the study as the cumulative release was 62% (FA), 73% (FB), and 80% (FC). The release kinetics followed Korsmeyer-Peppas model with super case-II transport mechanism. Conclusion: Blends of Khaya senegalensis gum and sodium alginate are promising polymer combination for the preparation of controlled-release formulations. The blend of the khaya gum and sodium alginate produced microspheres with controlled release properties. However, the formulation containing 2:3 ratio of khaya gum and sodium alginate respectively produced microspheres with comparable controlled release profiles to the commercial brand metformin tablet.

In this study, a novel ternary Z-scheme Graphite-like Carbon Nitride (g-C3N4)/Silver (Ag)/Silver Phosphate (Ag3PO4) photocatalyst was designed and prepared using a two-step method (sodium chloride (NaCl) template-assisted strategy plus selective deposition). Its photocatalysts performance against removing 400 ppm of Nitric Oxides (NOx) was then investigated. These separated the electron-hole but enhanced the original strong oxidation and reduction performance of related components. The superior performance is also attributed to the improved surface area, enhanced hydrophilicity (H2O2) and better visible-light-harvesting capability of the composite compound. More importantly, the AP-CN 2:1 sample maintained a NO removal rate of more than 73% even after four rounds of recycling. The photocatalytic oxidation removal mechanism was evaluated using the radical-capture experiments, electron spin resonance (ESR) and ion-exchange high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. There are several lines of evidence for the subsurface ocean within Europa; however, its oceanic chemistry and geochemical cycles are largely unknown. The recent observations by large telescopes show that exogenic sulfur ions and SO2 are implanted from Io and accumulate as sulfuric acids in Europa’s trailing hemisphere. This suggests that a large amount of sulfate could have been supplied into the ocean over geological timescales. The telescope observations also suggest that chloride salts appear on chaotic terrains of Europa, suggesting that the primary oceanic anion may be chloride despite a supply of sulfate into the ocean. These observations imply the presence of possible sinks of exogenic sulfate within the ocean. Here, we report the results of laboratory experiments on hydrothermal sulfate reduction under the pressure conditions that correspond to Europa’s seafloor. Using a Dickson-type experimental system, we obtain the reaction rate of sulfate reduction at a pressure of 100 MPa and temperature of 280 degrees C for various pH levels (pH 2-7). We find strong pH dependence and little pressure dependence of the reaction rate. Sulfate reduction proceeds effectively at fluid pH < 6, whereas it is kinetically inhibited at fluid pH similar to 7. These results suggest that, if hydrothermal fluid pH is <6, hydrothermal sulfate reduction within Europa can be a sink of exogenic sulfate within the ocean in addition to precipitation of sulfate salts. Such acidic fluid pH may be achieved if hydrothermal activity is hosted by basaltic rocks. We suggest the importance of the thermal evolution of the rocky interior for both the ocean chemistry and sulfur cycles of Europa. Methyl mercury chloride MMC (CH3ClHg) is an ubiquitous environmental toxicant that causes a variety of adverse effects. In the present study, we investigated the effects of sub-chronic toxicity of MMC on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) through the evaluation of growth performance and hematological, biochemical, and oxidative stress biomarkers. From 150 healthy fish, five equally sized treatment groups were created: a control (CT) group fed with a basal diet and four MMC treatment groups exposed to 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 mg of MMC per kg of basal diet for 60 days. MMC exposure significantly reduced the growth performance and survival of O. niloticus and decreased red blood cell count and hemoglobin concentration. Treated fish exhibited normocytic normochromic anemia in addition to leucopenia, lymphopenia, granulocytopenia, and monocytopenia. Moreover, MMC exposure significantly affected liver function, including a reduction in the total protein levels while increasing cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It also markedly increased the production of stress biomarkers such as glucose and cortisol levels. Furthermore, MMC significantly elevated the levels of hepatic enzymes, induced tissue damage, and caused inflammation, as indicated by the upregulation of mRNA expression of hepatic metallothionein. Finally, MMC exposure induced oxidative stress by altering the antioxidant status of the liver and downregulating the mRNA expression of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione S-reductase. In conclusion, MMC toxicity induced hematological and biochemical alterations, leading to an enhanced state of oxidative stress in O. niloticus.

Objectives: The combination therapy of phenothrin (PHT) and ivermectin (PI regimen) was effective for pyrethroid-resistant head lice in Okinawa; however, further investigations have been required to improve the regimen. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of the modified PI (mPI) regimen, which increased the maximum number of PHT treatments in the PI regimen by one, in Tsukuba, which has a low mutation rate compared to Okinawa. Methods: An open-label, uncontrolled, exploratory study was conducted at the Department of Dermatology, University of Tsukuba Hospital to investigate the treatment effect of mPI regimen. Genotypes were investigated for the knockdown (kdr) mutations at voltage-sensitive sodium channel (VSSC) and glutamate-gated chloride receptor-encoding loci to identify their correlation with drug resistance. Results: All the 8 patients treated with the mPI regimen resulted in lice free on day 29. Compared to baseline, the number of bodies, eggs, and itching grade significantly decreased on day 29. Mild erythema appeared after the second application of PHT on day 8 in one patient, persisted for 2 days, and recovered on day 15. No other adverse events were reported. Mutation rates were more than double in head lice collected from one patient for whom PHT was ineffective compared to those in lice from patients who responded to PHT. Furthermore, we identified four new haplotypes of VSSC loci in head lice. Conclusions: The mPI regimen is a potential effective treatment for economically combating both PHT-sensitive and resistant head lice.

Anoctamin1 (ANO1), a calcium-activated chloride ion channel (CaCC), is associated with various physiological functions including cancer progression and metastasis/invasion. ANO1 has been considered as a promising target for cancer therapeutics as ANO1 is over-expressed in a variety of cancers including glioblastoma (GBM) and inhibition of ANO1 has been reported to suppress cell proliferation, migration and invasion in GBM. GBM is one of the most common and aggressive cancers with poor prognosis with median survival for 15 months. Lack of effective treatment options against GBM emphasizes urgent necessity of effective GBM therapeutics. In an effort to discover potent and selective ANO1 inhibitors capable of inhibiting GBM cells, we have designed and synthesized a series of new 2-aminothiophene-3-carboxamide derivatives and performed SAR studies using both fluorescent cellular membrane potential assay and whole-cell patch-clamp recording. We observed that among these substances, 9c and 10q strongly suppress ANO1 channel activities and possess remarkable selectivity over ANO2. Unique structural feature of 10q, a cyclopentane-fused thiophene-3-carboxamide derivative, is the presence of benzoylthiourea functionality which dramatically contributes to activity. Both 9c and 10q suppress more strongly proliferation of GBM cells than four reference compounds including 3, Ani-9 and are also capable of inhibiting much more strongly colony formation than reference compounds in both 2D colony formation assay and 3D soft agar assay using U251 glioma cells. In addition, 9c and 10q suppress far more strongly migration/invasion of GBM cells than reference compounds. We, for the first time, found that the combination of ANO1 inhibitor (9c or 3) and temozolomide (TMZ) brings about remarkable synergistic effects in suppressing proliferation of GBM cells. In this study, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) with a final temperature of 1000 degrees C at a heating rate of 10 degrees C/min and rapid pyrolysis are used to analyze the catalytic pyrolysis effect of CaCl2 and NiCl2 on lignite samples, mainly including pyrolysis reaction analysis and tar product distribution. The effect of the catalyst on coal pyrolysis could be divided into three stages. Due to catalysis, the pyrolysis of the most unstable structure of coal is advanced to the first stage, which makes the second stage show a certain catalytic inhibition. Kinetic analysis reveals that the activation energy of pyrolysis is obviously reduced by catalysts, and comparatively, the most energy is needed at the second stage. The tar mainly contains substances with 5 to 16 carbon atoms, and aromatic hydrocarbons, as the main components, account for more than 90% of the tar composition. The yield of light aromatic compounds increases with the catalysts Ca and Ni, while the yield of polycyclic aromatics decreases.

Ecological assessment was performed in different thermal springs located in the Ethiopian Rift Valley area: Gergedi, Sodere, Halaba, and Gara. We assessed the habitat conditions, physicochemical characteristics, and macroinvertebrate composition at 12 sampling sites in four thermal spring systems. The physicochemical properties of the water samples varied among the sampling stations. Temperature ranged from 38.5 to 90 degrees C among the 12 sites. Dissolved oxygen, which is essential to aquatic ecosystem normal functioning, was not detected at three sampling sites. An average of 109 macroinvertebrates were identified in three sampling campaigns. Relatively higher macroinvertebrate abundance 94 (86.2%) was registered in Gergedi than any other thermal spring sites. The macroinvertebrate abundance was 9 (8.3%) and 6 (5.5%) for the Gara and Sodere thermal springs. No macroinvertebrate communities were observed in all sites of Halaba thermal spring. From all macroinvertebrate groups, 82 (75.2%) were dipterans, 20 (18.4%) Oligochaeta, 5 (4.6%) Gastropoda, and the rest Hemipterans and Coleopterans, which comprises 2 (1.8%) individuals. Chironomidae was the dominant invertebrate taxa at all sites, and when the water temperature exceeds 42 degrees C, it becomes the only taxon in the thermal springs. Macroinvertebrates were absent in thermal springs where the water temperature is 52 degrees C or higher. Other diversity measures were not sensitive enough to discriminate sampling sites regardless of physicochemical variabilities except the richness and abundance. Water temperature, chloride, pH, and phosphate were identified as major determinants of macroinvertebrate richness in the Ethiopian Rift Valley region.

Silver nanowires were successfully prepared by polyol method using silver nitrate as silver source, ethylene glycol as solvent and reducing agent, and ferric chloride as nucleating agent and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as structure directing agent and protective agent. The obtained silver nanowires were mixed with Kraft pulp fibers and bacterial cellulose to prepare conductive paper via simple filtration process. The stress and strain of the paper with bacterial cellulose were increased by 60% and 7%, respectively, compared with that of the paper without bacterial cellulose. The maximum retention ratio and the highest recovery ratio of silver nanowires in conductive paper reached 94% and 75%, respectively. The resistance of as-prepared conductive paper was only 0.9 omega. In conductive paper, the silver nanowires attached to the paper-based materials with cellulose fibers as the substrate, which achieved the electrical conductivity of paper-based materials. This conductive paper can be applied as antistatic, antibacterial packaging and conductive material.
