Non-leaching antibacterial coatings through quaternary ammonium salts containing polymers were successfully produced in a facile way to provide infection resistant surfaces against multi drug resistant bacteria such as B. licheniformis. In order to do so, a series of random copolymers of styrene (S) and vinyl benzyl chloride (VBC) were synthesized by free radical polymerization technique and subsequently, VBC (V) was functionalized with N,N-dimethylhexadecylamine to introduce quaternary ammonium (QA) salts in the backbone of the copolymers. The copolymers showed an excellent film forming ability, thereby providing an ultrathin coating on various substrates such as metal (stainless steel), glass, polyethylene and polystyrene, as observed by SEM.The coatings were found to be uniform, non leachable in aqueous medium and exhibit good adhesion to various substrates. The antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of the non-leachable coating of random copolymers were screened against B. licheniformis. Among, the copolymer containing 75% quaternized VBC (75VSQA) having 16-C long alkyl chain was found to show maximum antibacterial and antibiofilm activity owing to an appropriate hydrophobic /hydrophilic balance. The combined effects of external carbonation and internal chloride transport are the main reasons leading to the degradation of concrete structures manufactured with sea sand. To evaluate the degradation process of sea-sand concrete structures, a mathematical model for describing the redistribution of internal chlorides in sea-sand concrete exposed to atmospheric carbonation was proposed in this study. In the proposed model, changes in porosity, saturation degree, and the release of bound chlorides under the carbonation were considered. The numerical simulation of proposed model was executed by COMSOL software in a concrete model generated with random aggregates, which is verified to fit well with the experimental data obtained from a case study. In the modelling results, the chloride concentration in pore solution was decreased with the deeper depth after redistribution. However, on the chloride profile with the unit of wt% of concrete, a ‘pseudo enrichment’ of chlorides content was found after chloride redistribution and verified to be caused by the unit conversion. It is of great importance to obtain the accurate thermal properties of molten salts over the entire operating temperature for system design in concentrated solar power or other thermal storage systems. In this work, we explore size effects on density, viscosity and thermal conductivity predictions of molten nitrate and chloride salts by molecular dynamics. Equilibrium molecular dynamics and reverse nonequilibrium molecular dynamics methods are applied to calculate thermal conductivities of NaNO3 and NaCl regarding different simulation cell sizes at the specific temperatures to study size effects on thermal conductivity predictions of melts. The results show that the size effects are neglected on density and viscosity predictions while a linear positive relationship between 1/lambda and 1/L-z is found in the reverse nonequilibrium molecular dynamics method. Through analyzing the phenomenon from a view of microstructure, phonon-phonon-scattering rates are found to be the key factors. The influences of temperature and particle species on size effects are further discussed. Subsequently, appropriate simulation cell sizes are selected for NaNO3, KNO3 and Hitec salt, and the calculated thermal properties are in good agreement with the experimental values. The mean relative errors and fitting formula for density, thermal conductivity, and viscosity for the three salts are also obtained.

This work aimed to investigate the effects of sodium chloride (NaCl), calcium chloride (CaCl2), naphthenic acids, and sulfur compounds, which can be responsible for corrosion in oil refineries due to the rheological and physical properties of crude oils. The corrosion occurs by a cracking operation that depends on the solid-fluid interaction, the temperature, and the crude oil nature. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been used to predict the corrosion behavior based on the velocity profiles, shear stress, the friction factor, and the solid deposition rate of iron(II) chloride (FeCl2), iron(II) acetate (Fe(CH3COO)(2)), and iron sulfide (FeS) along the elbow. The numerical results proved that the corrosion locations are focused at certain regions, especially the elbow extrados wall outlet. The numerical results provide more solutions to avoid corrosion and improve the operational safety of the refinery.

Background Acidosis-induced kidney injury is mediated by the intrarenal renin-angiotensin system, for which urinary renin is a potential marker. Therefore, we hypothesized that sodium bicarbonate supplementation reduces urinary renin excretion in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and metabolic acidosis. Methods Patients with CKD stage G4 and plasma bicarbonate 15-24 mmol/l were randomized to receive sodium bicarbonate (3 x 1000 mg/day, similar to 0.5 mEq/kg), sodium chloride (2 x 1,00 mg/day), or no treatment for 4 weeks (n = 15/arm). The effects on urinary renin excretion (primary outcome), other plasma and urine parameters of the renin-angiotensin system, endothelin-1, and proteinuria were analyzed. Results Forty-five patients were included (62 +/- 15 years, eGFR 21 +/- 5 ml/min/1.73m(2), plasma bicarbonate 21.7 +/- 3.3 mmol/l). Sodium bicarbonate supplementation increased plasma bicarbonate (20.8 to 23.8 mmol/l) and reduced urinary ammonium excretion (15 to 8 mmol/day, both P < 0.05). Furthermore, a trend towards lower plasma aldosterone (291 to 204 ng/L, P = 0.07) and potassium (5.1 to 4.8 mmol/l, P = 0.06) was observed in patients receiving sodium bicarbonate. Sodium bicarbonate did not significantly change the urinary excretion of renin, angiotensinogen, aldosterone, endothelin-1, albumin, or alpha 1-microglobulin. Sodium chloride supplementation reduced plasma renin (166 to 122 ng/L), and increased the urinary excretions of angiotensinogen, albumin, and alpha 1-microglobulin (all P < 0.05). Conclusions Despite correction of acidosis and reduction in urinary ammonium excretion, sodium bicarbonate supplementation did not improve urinary markers of the renin-angiotensin system, endothelin-1, or proteinuria. Possible explanations include bicarbonate dose, short treatment time, or the inability of urinary renin to reflect intrarenal renin-angiotensin system activity. The detection of fraudulent additions to milk powder is an ongoing research subject for governmental agencies, industry and academia. Current developments steer towards the application of so-called fingerprint approaches, describing authentic, reference samples with spectroscopy and using one-class classification (OCC) to identify out-of-class, or adulterated samples. Within this article we describe the application of a novel, portable device hyphenating ultraviolet-visible, fluorescence and near-infrared spectroscopy in combination with OCC modelling to discriminate authentic skimmed milk powders from adulterated ones. As adulterated samples we analyzed skimmed milk powder with the addition of plant protein powder, whey powder, starch, lactose, glucose, fructose as well as non-protein nitrogen like ammonium chloride, ammonium nitrate, melamine and urea in different concentrations. After fusion of the classification results from the three spectral techniques and several models two scenarios are presented. 100% (scenario 1) or 80% (scenario 2) of the authentic skimmed milk powders were correctly identified as in-class, whereas respectively 64% or 86% of the adulterated samples were correctly classified as out-of-class. In brief, this article provides insights in the application of novel, portable devices that may be applied in a non-invasive manner and gives an outlook on data handling and a new data fusion strategy.

Prodiginines and tambjamines are anion-selective ionophores capable of facilitating the transport of anions across the plasma membrane in mammalian cells. One of the potential applications of these anionophores is the possibility of employing them as a substitutive therapy for pathologies involving anion channels, as in cystic fibrosis. We have studied the interaction of a large anion as gluconate with three prodiginineand two tambjamine-like compounds. Apparent dissociation constants for the chloride, iodide and gluconate complexes were estimated from iodide influx experiments in mammalian cells exposed to different extracellular anion combinations. Our experiments indicate that gluconate is not transported by the prodiginines, leaving the anionophores free to transport chloride and iodide. Conversely, gluconate would be transported to some extent by the tambjamines, competing with halides for the anionophores, and consequently reducing their flux. This might be related to the different structural features of both families of compounds. These data have important implications for the selection of impermeable anions in the analysis of the anionophore mechanism.
