Herein, we report the natural ligand quebrachitol (QCT) as a promoter for a Cu(II) catalyst, which is highly effective for N-arylation of various amines and related aryl halides. A series of diarylamine derivatives were obtained in high yields by using diethylene glycol (DEG) as both ligand and solvent. The C-N coupling reactions proceed under mild conditions and exhibit good functional group tolerance.

The energy released when tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C(14)TAB) is combined with different derivatives of chlorobenzoates in an isothermal titration calorimeter (ITC) allows a direct evaluation of the spontaneity of the threading of the aromatic anions into the micellar palisade. The comparison between the enthalpimetric curves with the ones for viscosity of the solutions, hydrodynamic radii of the aggregates (dynamic light scattering experiments), and the fraction of aromatic anions incorporated (diffusion-ordered spectroscopy experiments) allows the establishment of the variations of enthalpy with formation, growth, and decrease of the wormlike micelles (WLMs). The formation of WLMs with C(14)TAB is very favored (very exothermic) for titrations of chlorobenzoate derivatives which present the chlorine atom in positions 3 or 4 of the aromatic ring. However, the aggregation is highly unfavorable if chlorine is at position 2 of chlorobenzoate. According to the results, the high potential of the ITC to determine critical concentrations and the energies associated with the aggregation of a cationic surfactant and aromatic anions for the formation of WLMs was demonstrated.

Photoredox catalysis is a rapidly evolving platform for synthetic methods development. The prominent use of acridinium salts as a sustainable option for photoredox catalysts has driven the development of more robust and synthetically useful versions based on this scaffold. However, more complicated syntheses, increased cost, and limited commercial availability have hindered the adoption of these catalysts by the greater synthetic community. By utilizing the direct conversion of a xanthylium salt into the corresponding acridinium as the key transformation, we present an efficient and scalable preparation of the most synthetically useful acridinium reported to date. This divergent strategy also enabled the preparation of a suite of novel acridinium dyes, allowing for a systematic investigation of substitution effects on their photophysical properties.

Heavy metal pollution in lakes is becoming increasingly of interest to researchers. Because heavy metals have high mobility and do not degrade, they migrate easily between different environmental mediums through processes such as suspended solids deposition, sediment resuspension, and diffusion, among others. These processes are particularly pronounced in shallow lakes since the hydrodynamism is higher in bodies of water with minimal depth. Lake Ulansuhai a typical shallow lake in the Hetao irrigation district in Inner Mongolia-also experiences intense sandstorm activity, which compounds the suspended solids exchange intensity between water and sediment, strengthening the migration of heavy metals in the lake system. This study examines the fate and transport of two heavy metals-Zn and Pb-within this lake, using a field experiment to determine the flux of sediment re-suspension and deposition and a laboratory experiment to modify the QWASI model for shallow bodies of water. The aguivalence and mass balance approaches were used to develop this modified QWASI model. The margins of error between the modeled and the measured average concentrations of Zn and Pb in water were 5.0%-30.6% and 5.8%-29.5%, respectively, and in sediment were 0.3%-4.9% and 0.9-5.5%, respectively. These results suggest that the modified QWASI model developed here could indeed be used to more accurately represent the fate and transport of Zn and Pb during the icefree period of a shallow lake. Introduction Socioeconomic disparities have been established for conventional cigarette use, but not for electronic cigarettes. This study estimates socioeconomic gradients in exclusive use of conventional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, and dual use (ie, use of both products) among adults in the United States. Methods Analyses consider nationally representative data on 25- to 54-year-old respondents to the 2014-2016 National Health Interview Surveys (N = 50306). Demographically adjusted seemingly unrelated regression models estimate how two socioeconomic status measures-respondent education and household income-relate to current exclusive use of conventional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, and dual use. Results Conventional cigarette use exhibits negative education and income gradients, consistent with existing research: -12.9 percentage points (confidence interval [CI]: -14.0, -11.8) if college educated, and -9.5 percentage points (CI: -10.9, -8.1) if household income exceeds 400% of the federal poverty level. These gradients are flatter for dual use (-1.4 [CI: -1.8, -0.9] and -1.9 [CI: -2.5, -1.2]), and statistically insignificant for electronic cigarette use (-0.03 [CI: -0.5, 0.4] and -0.3 [CI: -0.8, -0.2]). Limiting the sample to ever-smokers, higher education is associated with a 0.9 percentage point increase in likelihood of exclusive electronic cigarette use at interview (CI: 0.0, 1.9). Conclusions Education and income gradients in exclusive electronic cigarette use are small and statistically insignificant, contrasting with strong negative gradients in exclusive conventional cigarette use. Furthermore, more educated smokers are more likely to switch to exclusive e-cigarette use than less educated smokers. Such differential switching may exacerbate socioeconomic disparities in smoking-related morbidity and mortality, but lower the burden of tobacco-related disease. Implications Research has not yet established whether socioeconomic disparities in electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use resemble those observed for conventional cigarettes. This article uses nationally representative data on US adults aged 25-54 to estimate income and education gradients in exclusive use of conventional cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and dual use. Both gradients are steep and negative for conventional cigarette use, but flat and statistically insignificant for e-cigarette use. Repeating the analysis among ever-smokers indicates that more educated smokers are more likely to transition toward exclusive e-cigarette use than less educated smokers. Such differential substitution may exacerbate disparities in smoking-related morbidity and mortality.

A protocol for solvent-free and additive-free oxidation of primary benzylic C-H bonds with O(2)was presented through adjusting the combination of metalloporphyrins and NHPI as binary catalysts to overcome the deficiencies encountered in current oxidation systems. The effects of reaction temperature, porphyrin structure, central metal, catalyst loading and O(2)pressure were investigated systematically. For the optimized combination of T(2-OCH3)PPCo and NHPI, all the primary benzylic C-H bonds could be functionalized efficiently and selectively at 120 degrees C and 1.0 MPa O(2)with aromatic acids as the primary products. The selectivity towards aromatic acids could reach up to 70-95% in the conversion of more than 30% for most of the substrates possessing primary benzylic C-H bonds in the metalloporphyrin loading of 0.012% (mol/mol). And the superior performance of T(2-OCH3)PPCo among the metalloporphyrins investigated was mainly attributed to its high efficiency in charge transfer and fewer positive charges around central metal Co (II) which favored the adduction of O-2 to cobalt (II) forming the high-valence metal-oxo complex followed by the production of phthalimide N-oxyl radical (PINO) and the initiation of the catalytic oxidation cycle. This work would provide not only an efficient protocol in utilization of hydrocarbons containing primary benzylic C-H bonds, but also a significant reference in the construction of more efficient C-H bonds oxidation systems Graphic Abstract The solvent-free and additive-free oxidation of primary benzylic C-H bonds with O(2)was presented through adjusting the combination of metalloporphyrins and NHPI as binary catalysts, and the highest selectivity towards aromatic acid reached up to 95.1% with the conversion of 88.5% in the optimized combination of T(2-OCH3)PPCo and NHPI. OBJECTIVE Management of craniosynostosis at an early age is important for mitigating the risk of abnormal cranial development, but treatment can result in significant expenses. Previous research has shown that endoscope-assisted craniectomy (EAC) is less costly than open cranial vault remodeling (CVR) for patients with sagittal synostosis. The aim of this study was to strengthen the existing body of healthcare cost research by elucidating the charges associated with open and endoscopic treatment for patients with nonsagittal synostosis. METHODS The authors performed a retrospective analysis of data obtained in 41 patients who underwent open CVR and 38 who underwent EAC with postoperative helmet therapy for nonsagittal, single-suture craniosynostosis (metopic, coronal, and lambdoid) between 2008 and 2018. All patients were < 1 year of age at the time of surgery and had a minimum 1 year of follow-up. Inpatient charges, physician fees, helmet charges, and outpatient clinic visits in the 1st year were analyzed. RESULTS The mean ages of the children treated with EAC and open CVR were 3.5 months and 8.7 months, respectively. Patients undergoing EAC with postoperative helmet therapy required more outpatient clinic visits in the 1st year than patients undergoing CVR (4 vs 2; p < 0.001). Overall, 13% of patients in the EAC group required 1 helmet, 30% required 2 helmets, 40% required 3 helmets, and 13% required 4 or more helmets; the mean total helmeting charges were $10,072. The total charges of treatment, including inpatient charges, physician fees, outpatient clinic visit costs, and helmet charges, were significantly lower for the EAC group than they were for the open CVR group ($50,840 vs $95,588; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Despite the additional charges for postoperative helmet therapy and the more frequent outpatient visits, EAC is significantly less expensive than open CVR for patients with metopic, coronal, and lambdoid craniosynostosis. In conjunction with the existing literature on clinical outcomes and perioperative resource utilization, these data support EAC as a cost-minimizing treatment for eligible patients with nonsagittal synostosis. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb), the etiologic agent of tuberculosis, remains the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent worldwide. The emergence of drug-resistant M.tb strains stresses the need for drugs acting on new targets. Mycolic acids are very long chain fatty acids playing an essential role in the architecture and permeability of the mycobacterial cell wall. Their biosynthesis involves two fatty acid synthase (FAS) systems. Among the four enzymes (MabA, HadAB/BC, InhA and KasA/B) of the FAS-II cycle, MabA (FabG1) remains the only one for which specific inhibitors have not been reported yet. The development of a new LC-MS/MS based enzymatic assay allowed the screening of a 1280 fragment-library and led to the discovery of the first small molecules that inhibit MabA activity.
