A green and efficient method for the synthesis of amides has been developed through oxidative amidation between methylarenes with amines in a two-step continuous flow system. This method integrates methylarene oxidation and amide formation into a single operation which is usually accomplished separately. Oxidation with tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as green oxidant, the synthesis of amides under mild reaction conditions in continuous flow system and the utilization of methylarenes as starting material make this methodology novel and environment friendly. A series of core-shell Co-MOF-74@Mn-MOF-74 samples with different shell thicknesses were prepared by the seed growth method, which were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The shell thickness of these MOF samples were successfully controlled by adjusting the mass ratio between MnCl2 center dot 4H(2)O and Co-MOF-74. On this basis, these MOFs were applied to the catalytic oxidation of toluene. The results showed that with the growth of Mn-MOF-74 in the outer layer of Co-MOF-74, the oxidative selectivity of the substrate to benzaldehyde was greatly improved for the synergy between the core layer and shell layer. The conversion of toluene was 22.4%, and the selectivity of benzaldehyde was 98.1%. In addition, the catalyst can transform various substituted toluene into the corresponding aldehydes in highly selectivity and still keep good stability after four catalytic cycles. The selectivity of the corresponding aldehyde is generally above 80%.

The development of highly active and reusable supported catalysts for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling and catalytic C-H arylation is important for fundamental and applied chemistry, with these reactions being used to produce medical compounds and functional materials. Herein, we found that a mesoporous composite made of a linear poly(4-vinylpyridine) and tetrachloropalladate acted as a dual-mode catalyst for a variety of cross-coupling reactions, with both Pd nanoparticles and a Pd complex catalyst being observed under different conditions. The polyvinylpyridine-palladium composite1was readily prepared via the molecular convolution of poly(4-vinylpyridine) and sodium tetrachloropalladate to provide a hardly soluble polymer-metal composite. The Suzuki-Miyaura coupling and the C-H arylation of aryl chlorides and bromides with arylboronic acids, thiophenes, furans, benzene, and anisole proceeded in the presence of 0.004 mol% (40 mol ppm) to 1 mol% Pd of1to afford the corresponding coupling products in high yields. Furthermore, the catalyst was reused without an appreciable loss of activity. Pharmaceutical compounds and functional materials were synthesized via the coupling reactions. N(2)gas adsorption/desorption analysis indicated that the catalyst had a mesoporous nature, which played a crucial role in the catalysis. In the Suzuki-Miyaura couplings,in situgenerated palladium nanoparticles in the polymer matrix were catalytically active, while a polymeric Pd(II) complex was crucial in the C-H arylations. These catalytic species were investigated via XAFS, XPS, far-infrared absorption, and Raman spectroscopies, as well as DFT calculations.

Developing efficient and recyclable heterogeneous catalysts for organic reactions in water is important for the sustainable development of chemical industry. In this work, Pd nanoparticles supported on DABCO-functionalized porous organic polymer was successfully prepared through an easy copolymerization and successive immobilization method. Characterization results indicated that the prepared catalyst featured big surface area, hierarchical porous structure, and excellent surface amphiphilicity. We demonstrated the use of this amphiphilic catalyst in two case reactions, i.e. the aqueous hydrodechlorination and Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions. Under mild reaction conditions, the catalyst showed high catalytic activities for the two reactions. In addition, the catalyst could be easily recovered and reused for several times. Also, no obvious Pd leaching and aggregation of Pd nanoparticles occurred up during the consecutive reactions.

To enhance our understanding on environmental conditions of the Maowei Sea in Guangxi province, China, the concentration and distribution of 22 chlorobenzene compounds (CBs) in the surface sediment were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The relationship of the sediment between CBs and total organic carbon (TOC) was also investigated. The results showed that a total of eight kinds of CBs compounds were detected in the sediment samples which were collected from the coastal environment of the Maowei Sea, with an average concentration of 15.3ngg(-1) (the concentration range, 2.5-61.5ngg(-1)). The rank of their average concentrations was as follows: 2,3,4,5,6-pentachlorotoluene>hexachlorobenzene, 2-chlorotoluene, 3-chlorotoluene and 2,3-dichlorotoluene>2,4-dichlorotoluene>4-chlorotoluene>pentachlorobenzene. Most CBs were distributed in sediments along the east coast of the Maowei Sea. For total TOC content in sediments, the concentration in the sampling locations was similar, with a mean concentration of 8.83gkg(-1) (the concentration range, 4.87-20.13gkg(-1)). However, there was no significant correlation between the concentration of TOC and total CBs. Compared to the corresponding CBs in the sediment of other coastal areas in mainland China and other countries, the value of CBs in the Maowei Sea was low.

Providing new methods for the selective functionalization of small molecules is highly desirable, because installing molecular diversity in a desired position, for example, allows one to modulate bioactive molecules. This work reports a method for the selective functionalization of anilines using hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) as a solvent to promote an acid-catalyzed hydroarylation of olefins. Mechanistic experiments revealed that HFIP both protonates the alkene and selectively enables anilines toward the electrophilic aromatic substitution. We report herein the first Cu-catalysed borylation of a wide range of aryl chlorides with different electronic and steric properties using a readily prepared NHC-stabilised Cu catalyst and (KOBu)-Bu-t as the base with B(2)pin(2) (pin = pinacolato) as the boron reagent. The aryl chlorides are converted into their corresponding arylboronic esters in good yields. The new procedure shows broad functional group tolerance, and B(2)neop(2) (neop = neopentyl glycolato) can also be applied as the boron reagent.

Herein, we report the development of aryl halide-dependent chemoselective reactions, viz., the Buchwald-Hartwig type coupling reaction of an aryl iodide with an arylboronic acid and an aryl amine in the presence of a heterogeneous and reusable nickel catalyst and the Suzuki-Miyaura type coupling of an aryl chloride under similar conditions. Control experiments revealed that the presence of stoichiometric amounts of the phenylboronic acid/ester and aryl amine are essential for both reactions. NMR and XAFS studies suggested the formation of a boron-amine ate complex.
