The reaction proceeds through base-catalyzed benzyl C-H deprotonation and cyclization to afford 2-aryl-2H-indazoles in good yields. This synthetic strategy can be applied to the construction of several fluorescent and bioactive molecules.

Background The side reactions of dehalogenation or C-N coupling tend to occur when halogenated aromatic amines are prepared by catalytic hydrogenation reduction of halogenated aromatic nitro compounds. In this paper, we prepared the sub-microspherical Fe3O4@PDA-Pd NPs catalyst apply it efficiently in the hydrogenation reduction of halogenated aromatic nitro compounds to prepare the halogenated aromatic amines under atmospheric pressure. The catalyst shows a high selectivity of greater than 96% and can effectively inhibit the occurrence of the side reactions of dehalogenation and C-N coupling. Results The optimum condition of the hydroreduction reaction is when tetrahydrofuran is used as solvent and the reaction happens at 50 degrees C for 5 h. The selectivity of the chlorinated aromatic amine and the fluorinated aromatic amine products exceed 99% and the yield exceeds 90%. Only a small amount of dehalogenated products and C-N coupling by-products were produced in the brominated aromatic compound and the iodinated aromatic compound. Conclusion We developed a promising method for preparing the superparamagnetic and strongly magnetic Fe3O4@PDA core-shell sub-microsphere-supported nano-palladium catalyst for catalyzing the hydrogenation reduction of halogenated aromatic nitro compounds. The halogenated aromatic amines were efficiently and highly selectively prepared under atmospheric pressure, with the side reactions of dehalogenation and C-N coupling effectively inhabited simultaneously.

A series of imidazolium-based palladate precatalysts has been synthesized and the catalytic activity of these air- and moisture-stable complexes evaluated as a function of the nature of the imidazolium counterion. These precatalysts can be converted under catalytic conditions to Pd-NHC species capable of enabling the Buchwald-Hartwig aryl amination and the alpha-arylation of ketones. Both reactions can be carried out efficiently under very mild operating conditions. The effectiveness of the protocol was tested on functionality-laden substrates.

The resolution of samples containing unknown compounds of different nature, or without standards available, as is the case of chromatographic fingerprints, is still a challenge. Possibly, the most problematic aspect that prevents systematic method development is finding models that describe without bias the retention behaviour of the compounds in the samples. In this work, the use of global models (able to describe the whole sample) is proposed as an alternative to the use of individual models for each solute. Global models contain parameters that are specific for each solute, while other parameters -related to the column and solvent- are common for all solutes. A special regression procedure is presented for the construction of global models, which are applied to predict highly complex chromatograms, such as chromatographic fingerprints, for diverse experimental conditions in isocratic and gradient elution. Another interesting application is the prediction of molecular properties, such as log P-o/w from the specific solute parameters of the global models. The examined adapted models are based on the equations proposed by Snyder, Schoenmakers, Neue and Kuss, Jandera, and Bosch Roses to describe the retention. In all cases, the predictive capability was very satisfactory. Two cases of study were considered: chromatograms of camomile extracts analysed using acetonitrile gradients, and a set of 145 known compounds in a wide range of structures and functionalities, eluted isocratically with acetonitrile/water mobile phases. A new synthetic method toward direct C-N bond formation through saturated C-H amination of benzylic hydrocarbons and inactive aliphatic alkanes with primary aromatic amines under an inexpensive catalyst/oxidant (Cu/DTBP) system has been developed. Both aminopyridines and anilines could react smoothly with primary and secondary benzylic C-H substrates or cyclohexane to form the corresponding aromatic secondary amines in moderate to good yields. This protocol has the advantages of wide functional group tolerance and use of readily available raw materials.

Octahedral CdS-ZnS composites were synthesized using a simple method of cation exchange and hydrothermal treatment, using Cd-3(C3N3S3)(2) (denoted as Cd-3(TMT)(2)) as a precursor and Zn2+ for ion exchange. In the spontaneous ion exchange process, there is the formation of compact heterojunctions and three-dimensional octahedral structures. By controlling the ion exchange level, the composition of (CdxZn1-x)(3) (TMT)(2) hybrid nanomaterials can be regulated, and the composite can be used as a template to generate octahedral CdS-ZnS. Photocatalytic oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde was used as a model reaction to evaluate the performance of the as-prepared samples, and the CZ-2 catalyst shows the highest photocatalytic activity, giving a benzaldehyde formation rate of 1078 mu mol.g(-1).h(-1) without the need of any solvent. The excellent performance is ascribed to the octahedral structure which is large in specific surface area and compact in heterojunctions. It is envisaged that the method is suitable for the generation of heterojunctions for photocatalytic purposes.

A canister-based sampling method along with preconcentrator-Gas chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis was applied to ethylene oxide (EtO or EO) and 75 other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in ambient air. Ambient air can contain a large variety of VOCs, and thorough analysis requires non-discriminatory sampling and a chromatographic method capable of resolving a complex mixture. Canister collection of whole air samples allows for the collection of a wide range of volatile compounds, while the simultaneous analysis of ethylene oxide and other VOCs allows for faster throughput than separate methods. The method presented is based on US EPA Method TO-15A and allows for the detection of EtO from 18 to 2500 ppt(v). The method has an average accuracy of 104% and precision of 13% relative standard deviation (RSD), with an instrument run time of 32 min. In addition, a link between canister cleanliness and ethylene oxide growth is observed, and potential mechanisms and cleaning strategies are addressed.

A protocol for solvent-free and additive-free oxidation of primary benzylic C-H bonds with O(2)was presented through adjusting the combination of metalloporphyrins and NHPI as binary catalysts to overcome the deficiencies encountered in current oxidation systems. The effects of reaction temperature, porphyrin structure, central metal, catalyst loading and O(2)pressure were investigated systematically. For the optimized combination of T(2-OCH3)PPCo and NHPI, all the primary benzylic C-H bonds could be functionalized efficiently and selectively at 120 degrees C and 1.0 MPa O(2)with aromatic acids as the primary products. The selectivity towards aromatic acids could reach up to 70-95% in the conversion of more than 30% for most of the substrates possessing primary benzylic C-H bonds in the metalloporphyrin loading of 0.012% (mol/mol). And the superior performance of T(2-OCH3)PPCo among the metalloporphyrins investigated was mainly attributed to its high efficiency in charge transfer and fewer positive charges around central metal Co (II) which favored the adduction of O-2 to cobalt (II) forming the high-valence metal-oxo complex followed by the production of phthalimide N-oxyl radical (PINO) and the initiation of the catalytic oxidation cycle. This work would provide not only an efficient protocol in utilization of hydrocarbons containing primary benzylic C-H bonds, but also a significant reference in the construction of more efficient C-H bonds oxidation systems Graphic Abstract The solvent-free and additive-free oxidation of primary benzylic C-H bonds with O(2)was presented through adjusting the combination of metalloporphyrins and NHPI as binary catalysts, and the highest selectivity towards aromatic acid reached up to 95.1% with the conversion of 88.5% in the optimized combination of T(2-OCH3)PPCo and NHPI. Half-sandwich ruthenium(II) complexes containing eta(6)-coordinated 3-phenylpropanol and phosphinous-acid-type ligands, namely, [RuCl2(eta(6)-C6H5CH2CH2CH2OH){P(OH)R-2}] (R = Me (2a), Ph (2b), 4-C6H4CF3(2c), 4-C6H4OMe (2d), OMe (2e), OEt (2f), and OPh (2g), have been synthesized in 44-88% yield by reacting [RuCl2 {eta 6:k(1) (O)-C6H5CH2CH2CH2OH}] (1) with the appropriate pentavalent phosphorus oxide R2P(=O)H. The structure of [RuCl2(eta(6)-C6H5CH2CH2CH2OH){P(OH)Me-2}] (2a) was unequivocally confirmed by X-ray diffraction methods. Compounds 2a-g proved to be catalytically active in the isomerization of allylbenzenes into the corresponding (1-propenyl)benzene derivatives employing water as the sole reaction solvent, with [RuCl2(eta(6)-C6H5CH2CH2CH2OH){P(OH)(OPh)(2)}] (2g) showing the best performance and a broad substrate scope (73-93% isolated yields with E/Z ratios around 90:10 employing 1 mol % of 2g and 3 mol % of K2CO3, and performing the catalytic reactions at 80 degrees C for 4-24 h). The results herein presented show for the first time the utility of phosphinous acids as auxiliary ligands for metal-catalyzed olefin isomerization processes, reactions in which a cooperative role for the P-OH unit is proposed. On the other hand, the utility of complexes 2a-g as catalysts for ortho-arylation reactions of 2-phenylpyridine in water is also briefly discussed.
