A new indolylphosphine WK-phos has been synthesized for Pd-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of (hetero)aryl chlorides with (alkyl)arylboronic acids. Comprising this newly developed ligand with palladium(II) acetate, the resulting catalyst system was found to be highly effective in facilitating the reaction even when the catalyst loading reaches parts per million levels (e.g. 10 ppm). These examples represent one of the lowest catalyst loadings reported to date of employing monophosphine (e.g. Ar-PCy2) for Suzuki-Miyaura reactions. The ligand geometry has also been well-characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography.

Tracing the herbicide bixlozone and its metabolites in food is necessary to assess their risks to human health. In the study, a rapid and effective analytical method using the quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe method for the simultaneous determination of bixlozone and its metabolites (2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid, 3-hydroxy-propanamide-bixlozone, and 5 ‘-hydroxy-bixlozone) in plant and animal samples (tomato, cucumber, apple, wheat flour, meat, milk, and egg) was developed based on ultra high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The method was validated based on the linearity (R-2 > 0.99), sensitivity (limit of quantification = 0.01 mg/kg), recovery (70.2-115.1%), and precision (intraday 1.2-17.6%, interday 0.3-16.0%). Detection was achieved within 6.0 min. The method is reliable for the determination of four target compounds in all seven matrices. The satisfactory validation criteria and successful application show that the proposed methodology is suitable for the detection of four target compounds in real matrices.

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a membrane technology that separates dissolved species from water. RO has been applied for the removal of chemical contaminants from water and is employed in wastewater reclamation to provide an additional barrier to improve the removal of trace organic contaminants. The presence of a wide variety of influent chemical contaminants and the insufficient rejection of low molecular weight neutral chemicals by RO calls for the need to develop a comprehensive model that predicts the rejection of various chemicals in RO. Yet the role of the interaction between neutral organic compounds and a RO membrane, and how the functional groups of organic compounds affect the interaction have not been fully elucidated. In this study, we first constructed a molecular model for a reference polyamide (PA) membrane. We then investigated the impact of explicit water molecules and PA membrane functionality on the membrane structure using quantum mechanical calculations. We examined solvent-membrane interactions and then solvent-membrane-solute interactions using two neutral test solutes, arsenic and boron, by comparing the theoretically calculated aqueous-phase free energies of interaction with their experimental values. Finally, the validated PA membrane model was used to calculate the free energies of interaction for a wide variety of organic compounds such as haloalkanes, haloalkenes, alkylbenzenes and halobenzenes, which correlated with the experimentally obtained mass transfer coefficients. The correlation indicates that the interaction between organic compounds and PA membranes plays a critical role in the rejection mechanism.

Analysis of acidic pharmaceuticals in complex biological samples is a challenging and formidable task due to the existence of interfering constituents within the sample matrices. Therefore, in order to avoid analytical column clogging and suppression/enhancement of signals of the analyte of interest, herein a simple, cost-effective and quick online ion chromatography based clean-up setup was introduced. This system was further coupled with a cost-effective homemade photochemically induced fluorimetric (PIF) setup for direct online conversion of non fluorescent acidic pharmaceutical drugs into their respective fluorescent species. This advantageous system was favorably applied for the determination of four non-fluorescent acidic compounds in two complex biological samples (human serum and oral fluid) with minimum labor and organic solvent consumption. At optimized conditions, the developed method has shown good sensitivity, selectivity, satisfactory recoveries (88.68-102.14%) and low limits of detection (0.35-8.10 mu g/L) with minimum or zero matrix effect.

A highly efficient palladium-free homogeneous catalyst involving Ni(acac)(2)/2,6-bis(diphenylphosphino) pyridine ((Ph2P)(2)py)/CuI components was used for the Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction. The Sonogashira reaction was investigated between phenylacetylene and various bromoand chloroarenes containing electron neutral, electron-rich, electron-poor, electron-deficient, and sterically hindered aryl fragments. The aryl alkynes coupling products were obtained with good to excellent yields at the optimized conditions using Ni(acac)(2) (0.3 mol%)/(Ph2P)(2)py (0.6 mol%)/CuI (0.03 mol%) as the catalyst, tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) as the additive, Et3N as the base in DMF at 100 degrees C under N-2 atmosphere.

The cooperation of Bacillus subtilis strain DKT and Comamonas testosteroni KT5 was investigated for biofilm development and toluenes and chlorobenzenes degradation. Bacillus subtilis strain DKT and C. testosteroni KT5 were co-cultured in liquid media with toluenes and chlorobenzenes to determine the degradation of these substrates and formation of dual-species biofilm used for the degradation process. Bacillus subtilis strain DKT utilized benzene, mono- and dichlorinated benzenes as carbon and energy sources. The catabolism of chlorobenzenes was via hydroxylation, in which chlorine atoms were replaced by hydroxyl groups to form catechol, followed by ring fission via the ortho-cleavage pathway. The investigation of the dual-species biofilm composed of B. subtilis DKT and C. testosteroni KT5 (a toluene and chlorotoluene-degrading isolate with low biofilm formation) showed that B. subtilis DKT synergistically promoted C. testosteroni KT5 to develop biofilm. The bacterial growth in dual-species biofilm overcame the inhibitory effects caused by monochlorobenzene and 2-chlorotoluene. Moreover, the dual-species biofilm showed effective degradability toward the mixture of these substrates. This study provides knowledge about the commensal relationships in a dual-culture biofilm for designing multispecies biofilms applied for the biodegradation of toxic organic substrates that cannot be metabolized by single-organism biofilms.

The CTAB-Pd/GAC catalyst was obtained by functionalizing palladium/granular activated carbon (Pd/GAC) with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), which was used for the electrocatalytic reductive dechlorination of 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid (2,4-DCBA). The degradation rate of 2,4-DCBA by 40 mg g(-1) CTAB-Pd/GAC was 9.8 x 10(-3) (min(-1) g(-1) Pd), which was 11 folds than that by Pd/GAC (0.9 x 10(-3) min(-1) g(-1) Pd), and the value of q(e, 2,4-DCBA)/q(e), BA was 2.33 as compared to 0.67 for Pd/GAC. The combined result of dechlorination and adsorption experiments suggested that the functionalization by CTAB would enhance the 2,4-DCBA concentration on the surface of CTAB-Pd/GAC, and accelerate the degradation rate. However, the removal efficiency of 2,4-DCBA would decrease when the CTAB load reached 80 mg g(-1), due to the excessive adsorption capacity for dech-lorinated product. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations also proved that CTAB would increase adsorption capacity of catalyst and selective adsorption behavior of 2,4-DCBA, which accelerated the degradation rate of 2,4-DCBA.

A series of palladium N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), complexes C1-C5, bearing dianisole backbones and substituted N-aryl moieties have been synthesized and characterized. The electronic effect as well as the steric environment of the NHC ligands has been assessed. The synthesized palladium complexes were applied for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions under aerobic conditions. The relationship between the catalytic structure and catalytic performance was then extensively investigated. Upon optimizing the reaction conditions, the C4 was found to be highly efficient to catalyze the cross-coupling of (hetero)aryl chlorides with (hetero)arylboronic acids at a 0.1 mol % palladium loading.

HGF/c-Met signalling pathway plays an important role in the development of cancers. A series of 6,7-dimethoxy-4-anilinoquinolines possessing benzimidazole moiety were synthesised and identified as potent inhibitors of the tyrosine kinase c-Met. Their in vitro biological activities against three cancer cell lines (A549, MCF-7, and MKN-45) were also evaluated. Most of these compounds exhibited moderate to remarkable potency. Among them, compound 12n showed the most potent inhibitory activity against c-Met with IC50 value of 0.030 +/- 0.008 mu M and it also showed excellent anticancer activity against the tested cancer cell lines at low micromolar concentration. Molecular docking verified the results and revealed the possible binding mode of the most promising compound 12n into the ATP-binding site of c-Met kinase.
