Half-sandwich ruthenium(II) complexes containing eta(6)-coordinated 3-phenylpropanol and phosphinous-acid-type ligands, namely, [RuCl2(eta(6)-C6H5CH2CH2CH2OH){P(OH)R-2}] (R = Me (2a), Ph (2b), 4-C6H4CF3(2c), 4-C6H4OMe (2d), OMe (2e), OEt (2f), and OPh (2g), have been synthesized in 44-88% yield by reacting [RuCl2 {eta 6:k(1) (O)-C6H5CH2CH2CH2OH}] (1) with the appropriate pentavalent phosphorus oxide R2P(=O)H. The structure of [RuCl2(eta(6)-C6H5CH2CH2CH2OH){P(OH)Me-2}] (2a) was unequivocally confirmed by X-ray diffraction methods. Compounds 2a-g proved to be catalytically active in the isomerization of allylbenzenes into the corresponding (1-propenyl)benzene derivatives employing water as the sole reaction solvent, with [RuCl2(eta(6)-C6H5CH2CH2CH2OH){P(OH)(OPh)(2)}] (2g) showing the best performance and a broad substrate scope (73-93% isolated yields with E/Z ratios around 90:10 employing 1 mol % of 2g and 3 mol % of K2CO3, and performing the catalytic reactions at 80 degrees C for 4-24 h). The results herein presented show for the first time the utility of phosphinous acids as auxiliary ligands for metal-catalyzed olefin isomerization processes, reactions in which a cooperative role for the P-OH unit is proposed. On the other hand, the utility of complexes 2a-g as catalysts for ortho-arylation reactions of 2-phenylpyridine in water is also briefly discussed.

A bisoxazoline-derived NHC known as IBiox-6 reacted smoothly with Ni[P(OEt)(3)](2)Br-2 and Ni(PPh3)(2)Br-2 to give the respective heteroleptic Ni(II) complexes Ni(IBiox-6)[P(OEt)(3)]Br-2 (1) and Ni(IBiox-6)(PPh3)Br-2 (2) in yields of 60% and 71%. Their crystal structures were characterized to reveal a rare cis disposition of the IBiox-6 ligand to the phosphite ligand in 1, while 2 possessed the more common trans configuration. Both complexes catalyzed the cross-electrophile coupling of benzyl chlorides with aryl chlorides and fluorides in the presence of Mg turnings at 50 degrees C via a real one-pot procedure, featuring no requirement for temperature variation or portionwise addition of any coupling partner. In particular, complex 1 showed a better balance between the catalytic activity and selectivity. The scope of the procedure catalyzed by 1 and Mg turnings was investigated, providing a highly selective, simple, and practical approach to the synthesis of diarylmethanes with high steric hindrance and various functional groups, including oligo-diarylmethane with asymmetric structures.

Three new N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-Pd(II) complexes using 5-phenyloxazole as the ancillary ligand have been obtained in moderate to good yields by a one-pot reaction of the corresponding imidazolium salts, palladium chloride and 5-phenyloxazole under mild conditions. Initial studies showed that one of the complexes is an efficient catalyst for the Buchwald-Hartwig amination of aryl chlorides with various secondary and primary amines under the varied catalyst loading of 0.01-0.05 mol%, thus it will enrich the chemistry of NHCs and give an alternative catalyst for the coupling of challenging while cost-low aryl chlorides. We report herein P(III)-directed C-H bond alkenylation of (dialkyl)- and (diaryl)biarylphosphines using internal alkynes. Chloride-free [Rh(OAc)(COD)](2) acts as a better catalyst than commercially available [RhCl(COD)](2). Conditions were developed to control the mono- and difunctionalization depending on the alkyne stoichiometry. One of these novel bisalkenylated (dialkyl)biarylphosphines was employed for the preparation of a palladium(II) complex, and some of these functionalized ligands outperformed their corresponding unfunctionalized phosphines in Pd-catalyzed amidation with sterically hindered aryl chlorides.

A series of benzothiazole derivatives bearing a 1,3,4-thiadiazole moiety were designed, synthesized and evaluated for their antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral activities. The bioassay results indicated that most of target compounds showed good antiviral activities against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and antibacterial activities against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) and Ralstonia solanacearum (Rs). Especially, the anti-Xoo effect of title compounds 5k (N-(5-methoxybenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-2-((5-(2-tolyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)thio)acetamide) and the anti-Rs effect of title compounds 5a (N-(5-nitrobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-2-((5-(4-(trifluorom ethyl)phenyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)thio)acetmide) respectively reached 52.4% and 71.6% at 100 mu g/mL, which are superior to that of bismerthiazol (32.0% and 52.3%). In addition, the protective and inactivation activities of title compound 5i (N-(5-methoxybenzo [d]thiazol-2-yl)-2-((5-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)thio)acetamide) against TMV were 79.5% and 88.3%, respectively, which are better than that of ningnanmycin (76.4% and 86.8%). The above research showed that benzothiazole derivatives bearing a 1,3,4-thiadiazole moiety may be used as potential molecular templates in searching for highly-efficient antiviral and antibacterial agents.
