We have explored the effect of a co-existing metal in the ligand-free Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction of an aryl chloride, which is promoted by a continuous irradiation type microwave and a palladium nanoparticle catalyst, and found that the co-existing metal affects this reaction due to its absorption ability of microwave energy in the reaction system. We also observed that spiking occurred more frequently in the presence of a co-existing metal.

We describe a new catalytic strategy to transcend the energetic limitations of visible light by electrochemically priming a photocatalyst prior to excitation. This new catalytic system is able to productively engage aryl chlorides with reduction potentials hundreds of millivolts beyond the potential of Na-0 in productive radical coupling reactions. The aryl radicals produced via this strategy can be leveraged for both carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond-forming reactions. Through direct comparison, we illustrate the reactivity and selectivity advantages of this approach relative to electrolysis and photoredox catalysis.

A series of new Pd(II) complexes with simple structures were designed and synthesized for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions of aryl chlorides. The new Pd(II) complexes contain bidentate amine ligands, and their structures were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. They are highly efficient for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions of aryl chlorides with low catalyst loadings (0.01 mol %) in aqueous media at room temperature. Two possible reaction pathways involving a Pd-II(/0/)II and a Pd-II(/IV/II) catalytic cycle are proposed, and the mechanism was further investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

High-temperature thermal energy storage in shallow aquifers can potentially increase ambient groundwater temperatures up to 70 degrees C or even more. Since an increase in temperature is expected to influence contaminant mass flux into groundwater monitoring the spreading of organic contaminants located in the subsurface is crucial. In numerous former studies, the NAPL solubility, one major parameter controlling mass flux on field scale, was measured at temperatures up to 70 degrees C for a broad spectrum of organic substances. However, quantitative calculations of solubilities as a function of temperature considering a compiled database are largely missing. Aiming to examine the reliability of existing solubility-temperature relationships, to describe them functionally and further to identify knowledge gaps, previously published data on solubilities of 42 different organic groundwater contaminants were evaluated in this study. By using a common temperature regression function, the calculated solubility curves from compiled solubility data for 5-70 degrees C show relative changes between a few percent (CHCs and BTEX) and up to 2000% (PAH5). As published temperature-dependent solubilities for chlorinated ethylenes are contradictory in parts, solubilities of tetrachloroethylene, trichloroethylene, 1,2-cis-dichloroethylene and 1,2-trans-dichloroethylene were additionally investigated in more detail using batch experiments between 5 and 70 degrees C. The results show distinctive solubility minima at medium temperatures (20-40 degrees C) with concentrations decreasing from 5 degrees C to the minimum by 10-20%. The measured and calculated temperature-dependent solubilities enable a more reliable assessment of thermal energy storage at contaminated sites, of existing thermal remediation approaches and of combinations of underground heat storage with groundwater remediation. A new indolylphosphine WK-phos has been synthesized for Pd-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of (hetero)aryl chlorides with (alkyl)arylboronic acids. Comprising this newly developed ligand with palladium(II) acetate, the resulting catalyst system was found to be highly effective in facilitating the reaction even when the catalyst loading reaches parts per million levels (e.g. 10 ppm). These examples represent one of the lowest catalyst loadings reported to date of employing monophosphine (e.g. Ar-PCy2) for Suzuki-Miyaura reactions. The ligand geometry has also been well-characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography.

A new synthetic method toward direct C-N bond formation through saturated C-H amination of benzylic hydrocarbons and inactive aliphatic alkanes with primary aromatic amines under an inexpensive catalyst/oxidant (Cu/DTBP) system has been developed. Both aminopyridines and anilines could react smoothly with primary and secondary benzylic C-H substrates or cyclohexane to form the corresponding aromatic secondary amines in moderate to good yields. This protocol has the advantages of wide functional group tolerance and use of readily available raw materials.

The upgrading of tar is a key issue for the sufficient application of biowaste pyrolysis technology. Molten salt, with high migration and diffusion of ions to prevent the deactivation of coke deposition of tar reforming functional metals, is considered as a feasible catalytic reaction medium and heat carrier for the upgrading of tar. The present study investigated the interactions between small molecular pyrolysis gases (including H-2, CO, CH4) and main tar model compound in ternary carbonate eutectics (Li2CO3-Na2CO3-K2CO3). The results demonstrated that H-2 could be decomposed to produce H radicals, promoting the conversion of toluene into gaseous products. CO32- could consume H radicals required by toluene cracking, making the process toluene polymerized to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons be strengthened. On the other hand, CO would react with OH radicals to produce H radicals and could enhance gas-generating process. In addition, toluene could react with CO to form benzaldehyde and phenylacetaldehyde. With the addition of CH4, more H radicals were supposed to be consumed, and toluene cracking process was further inhibited. Finally, the effect sequence of small molecular gases (H-2 > CH4 > CO) on toluene reforming reaction was authenticated by investigating the impacts of introducing any two gases in toluene reforming. Unnatural alpha-amino acids are invaluable building blocks in synthetic organic chemistry and could upgrade the function of peptides. We developed a new mode for catalytic activation of amino acid Schiff bases, serving as a platform for highly congested unnatural alpha-amino acid synthesis. The redox active copper catalyst enabled efficient cross-coupling to construct contiguous tetrasubstituted carbon centers. The broad functional group compatibility highlights the mildness of the present catalysis. Notably, we achieved successive beta-functionalization and oxidation of amino acid Schiff bases to afford dehydroalanine derivatives bearing tetrasubstituted carbon. A three-component cross-coupling reaction of an amino acid Schiff base, alkyl bromides, and styrene derivatives demonstrated the high utility of the present method. The diastereoselective reaction was also achieved using menthol derivatives as a chiral auxiliary, delivering enantiomerically enriched alpha-amino acid bearing alpha,beta-continuous tetrasubstituted carbon. The synthesized highly congested unnatural alpha-amino acid could be derivatized and incorporated into peptide synthesis.

Graphitic carbon nitride materials have attracted significant interest in recent years and found applications in diverse light-to-energy conversions such as artificial photosynthesis, CO2 reduction, or degradation of organic pollutants. However, their utilization in synthetic photocatalysis, especially in the direct functionalization of C(sp(3))-H bonds, remains underexplored. Herein, we report mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-CN as a heterogeneous organic semiconductor photocatalyst for direct arylation of C(sp(3))-H bonds in combination with nickel catalysis. Our protocol has a broad synthetic scope (>70 examples including late-stage functionalization of drugs and agrochemicals), is operationally simple, and shows high chemo- and regioselectivities. Facile separation and recycling of the mpg-CN catalyst in combination with its low preparation cost, innate photochemical stability, and low toxicity are beneficial features overcoming typical shortcomings of homogeneous photocatalysis. Detailed mechanistic investigations and kinetic studies indicate that an unprecedented energy-transfer process (EnT) from the organic semiconductor to the nickel complex is operating.
