We report the preparation and full characterization of a series of hydroxyl functionalized 1,2,3-triazolylidene- based PEPPSI complexes 2a-c and their catalytic application in the Suzuki cross coupling reaction of aryl chlorides/ amides with boronic acids. Under basic reaction conditions, complexes 2a-c show a notable increase in their catalytic efficiency compared with two ether-wingtip functionalized PEPPSI analogues (3 and 4) and a commercially available NHC-Pd complex (5). The catalytic results suggest that deprotonation of the hydroxyl group in complexes 2a-c plays an important role in the overall process. Deprotonation of the alcohol moiety of complexes 2a-b with sodium tert-butoxide allows for the isolation of metallacycles 6a-b, which are proposed as the active species of cross coupling reactions.

The cooperation of Bacillus subtilis strain DKT and Comamonas testosteroni KT5 was investigated for biofilm development and toluenes and chlorobenzenes degradation. Bacillus subtilis strain DKT and C. testosteroni KT5 were co-cultured in liquid media with toluenes and chlorobenzenes to determine the degradation of these substrates and formation of dual-species biofilm used for the degradation process. Bacillus subtilis strain DKT utilized benzene, mono- and dichlorinated benzenes as carbon and energy sources. The catabolism of chlorobenzenes was via hydroxylation, in which chlorine atoms were replaced by hydroxyl groups to form catechol, followed by ring fission via the ortho-cleavage pathway. The investigation of the dual-species biofilm composed of B. subtilis DKT and C. testosteroni KT5 (a toluene and chlorotoluene-degrading isolate with low biofilm formation) showed that B. subtilis DKT synergistically promoted C. testosteroni KT5 to develop biofilm. The bacterial growth in dual-species biofilm overcame the inhibitory effects caused by monochlorobenzene and 2-chlorotoluene. Moreover, the dual-species biofilm showed effective degradability toward the mixture of these substrates. This study provides knowledge about the commensal relationships in a dual-culture biofilm for designing multispecies biofilms applied for the biodegradation of toxic organic substrates that cannot be metabolized by single-organism biofilms.

Three new N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-Pd(II) complexes using 5-phenyloxazole as the ancillary ligand have been obtained in moderate to good yields by a one-pot reaction of the corresponding imidazolium salts, palladium chloride and 5-phenyloxazole under mild conditions. Initial studies showed that one of the complexes is an efficient catalyst for the Buchwald-Hartwig amination of aryl chlorides with various secondary and primary amines under the varied catalyst loading of 0.01-0.05 mol%, thus it will enrich the chemistry of NHCs and give an alternative catalyst for the coupling of challenging while cost-low aryl chlorides. We describe a new catalytic strategy to transcend the energetic limitations of visible light by electrochemically priming a photocatalyst prior to excitation. This new catalytic system is able to productively engage aryl chlorides with reduction potentials hundreds of millivolts beyond the potential of Na-0 in productive radical coupling reactions. The aryl radicals produced via this strategy can be leveraged for both carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond-forming reactions. Through direct comparison, we illustrate the reactivity and selectivity advantages of this approach relative to electrolysis and photoredox catalysis.

The recent pandemic (COVID-19) has seen a sweeping and surging use of products intended to clean and disinfect, such as air sprays, hand sanitizers, and surface cleaners, many of which contain fragrance. However, exposure to fragranced cleaning products has been associated with adverse effects on human health. Products can emit a range of volatile chemicals, including some classified as hazardous, but relatively few ingredients are disclosed to the public. Thus, relatively little is known about the specific emissions from these products. This study investigates the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from pandemic products that are being used frequently and extensively in society. In addition, among these emissions, this study identifies potentially hazardous compounds, compares so-called green and regular versions of products, and examines whether ingredients are disclosed to the public. Using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, 26 commonly used pandemic products, including 13 regular and 13 so-called green versions, were analyzed for their volatile emissions. Product types included hand sanitizers, air disinfectants, multipurpose cleaners, and handwashing soap. All products were fragranced. The analyses found the products collectively emitted 399 VOCs with 127 VOCs classified as potentially hazardous. All products emitted potentially hazardous compounds. Comparing regular products and green products, no significant difference was found in the emissions of the most prevalent compounds. Further, among the 399 compounds emitted, only 4% of all VOCs and 11% of potentially hazardous VOCs were disclosed on any product label or safety data sheet. This study reveals that pandemic products can generate volatile emissions that could pose risks to health, that could be unrecognized, and that could be reduced, such as by using fragrance-free versions of products.

Aryl ketones are ubiquitous structural motifs in organic synthesis. Nonetheless, the traditional methods for their generation are often costly and not environment-friendly. Herein we report a novel and efficient route for the preparation of aryl ketones by photocatalysis at mild conditions. Porous C3N4 nanorods decorated with spatially separated Ag and Co3O4 nanoparticles on the interior and exterior surface of C(3)N(4)( )hollow sphere (Co3O4/Ag@C3N4) fabricated by a facile method of supramolecular self-assembly. Using this porous material as photocatalyst and O-2 as oxidant, aryl ketones could efficiently generate (with a yield up to 75.7% and selectivity to 97%) via toluene and halobenzene under visible-light irradiation at room temperature. The present study not only provides an inexpensive strategy for aryl ketones generation but also an effective tactic for activation of sp(3 )C-H bonds under mild conditions. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. The palladium-catalyzed coupling of aryl and heteroaryl chlorides with primary amides under mild homogeneous reaction conditions is reported. Successful C-N coupling is enabled by the use of a unique dual-base system consisting of DBU and NaTFA, which serve as proton acceptor and halide scavenger, respectively, using low catalyst loadings (0.5 mol %) with readily available, air-stable palladium precatalysts. The DBU/NaTFA system also enables the room-temperature coupling of primary aryl amines with aryl chlorides and is tolerant of a variety of base-sensitive functional groups.

Investigations into nickel-catalyzed borylation reactions have led to the development of an experimental design of 24 reaction conditions for rapid lead identification. A case study on the borylation of a model aryl bromide with B-2(OH)(4) prompted a series of mechanistic and stability studies to better understand the catalytic cycle and factors that affect robustness. HTEx was employed to study the effect of a series of scavengers on the remediation of nickel from the reaction stream. These combined results have generated an increased understanding of nickel-catalyzed borylation reactions and set the stage for their expanded use in process chemistry.
