Trialkyl and aryl organoboranes catalyze the polymerization of dimethylsulfoxonium methylide (1). The product of the polymerization is a tris-polymethylene organoborane. Oxidation affords linear telechelic α-hydroxy polymethylene. The polymer mol. weight was found to be directly proportional to the stoichiometric ratio of ylide/borane, and polydispersities as low as 1.01-1.03 have been realized. Although oligomeric polymethylene has been the most frequent synthetic target of this method, polymeric star organoboranes with mol. weights of 1.5 million have been produced. The average turnover frequency at 120° in 1,2,4,5-tetrachlorobenzene/toluene is estimated at >6 × 106 g of polymethylene (mol boron)-1 h-1. The mechanism of the polyhomologation reaction involves initial formation of a zwitterionic organoborane-ylide complex which breaks down in a rate-limiting 1,2-alkyl group migration with concomitant expulsion of a mol. of DMSO. The reaction was found to be first order in the borane catalyst and zero order in ylide. DMSO does not interfere with the reaction. The temperature dependence of the reaction rate yielded the following activation energy parameters (toluene, ΔH = 23.2 kcal/mol, ΔS = 12.6 cal deg/mol, ΔG = 19.5 kcal/mol; THF, ΔH = 26.5 kcal/mol, ΔS = 21.5 cal deg/mol, ΔG = 20.1 kcal/mol).

An efficient and straightforward organocatalytic method for the direct, multicomponent carboxylation of terminal alkynes with CO2 and organochlorides, towards propargylic esters, is reported for the first time. 1,3-Di-tert-butyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium chloride, a simple, widely-available, stable, and cost-efficient N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) precursor salt was used as the (pre)catalyst. A wide range of phenylacetylenes, bearing electron-withdrawing or electron-donating substituents, react with allyl chlorides, benzyl chlorides, or 2-chloroacetates, providing the corresponding propargylic esters in low to excellent yields. DFT calculations on the mechanism of this transformation indicate that the reaction is initiated with the formation of an NHC-carboxylate, by addition of the carbene to a mol. of CO2. Then, the nucleophilic addition of this species to the corresponding chlorides has been computed to be the rate limiting step of the process.

Com. available tech. grade non-ionic surfactants usually contain impurities and have a broad distribution of mol. weight owing to degree of ethoxylation. It has shown that the surface tension method (Wilhelmy plate) is very sensitive if impurities are present in the surfactant. Much lower CMC values are obtained for tech. grade surfactants with the surface tension method than with the dye solubilization method. The CMC determined by the dye solubilization technique are in fair agreement with the values obtained by other available methods. The change in CMC of Tween-40 has been studied through the influence of additive Chloramine-T in aqueous medium by measuring the absorbance of the pure surfactant and with Chloramine-T in presence of the water-insoluble dye Orange-OT by using the dye solubilization technique. The absorbance was increased with increasing concentration of pure Tween-40. The absorbance of the mixed systems with Chloramine-T shows the same trend. The CMC of pure surfactant was decreased with increasing concentration of Chloramine-T. The influence of Chloramine-T on the absorbance of Tween-40 is a clear indication that the phenomenon of dye micellization is associated with the different micelles coalescing.

2-Ethynylbiaryls undergo 6-endo-dig cyclization into annulated phenanthrenes and helicenes, catalyzed by platinum complex with electron-accepting tricationic cyclopropenylium phosphine, [(Me2N)2C3+]3P (1), [[(Me2N)2C3+]3PPtCl3][ClO4]2 (3). The complex 3 is a bench-stable compound, easily available from reaction of K2PtCl4 with 1; the complex 3 is an excellent catalyst for cyclization of 2-ethynylbiaryls, when activated by Ag[CB11H6Cl6]. Complexation of platinum complex (3) with alkyne is approx. 6 kcal mol-1 more favorable, than with triphenylphosphine analog [(PPh3)PtCl3]. This constitutes the first example ever reported of using a P1-centered trication as ligand in catalysis. The strong π-acceptor character of 1 that derives from its three pos. charges substantially increases the intrinsic π-acidity of Pt in complex 1·PtCl2 and dramatically enhances its ability to activate π-systems toward nucleophilic attack. As a consequence, a remarkable acceleration of the model transformation is observed when compared with other classical π-acceptor ligands such as P(OPh)3 or P(C6F5)3. Moreover, the employment of 1 as ligand also expands the scope of this reaction to previously inaccessible substitution patterns. Kinetic studies and deuterium labeling experiments as well as d. functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed in order to explain these findings.

The lyotropic Lα-phase of hydrated dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine has been proposed as a solvent medium for modeling the effects of membranotropic agents upon cell membranes, including interactions between different agents inside the membrane. For quasibinary systems containing bisquaternary ammonium compounds decamethoxinum or aethonium and 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid, calorimetry data allowed us to establish the stoichiometry of the intermol. complexes incorporated in the membrane. The interaction mechanisms have been clarified using addnl. data obtained with tetramethylammonium and 1-menthol, which model the moieties of the decamethoxinum mol. separated by the alkyl chain. Possible implications of the obtained results for pharmacol. are discussed.

A model mol. biosystem of hydrated dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) bilayers that mimics cell biomembranes is used to probe combined membranotropic effects of drugs by instrumental techniques of mol. biophysics. Differential scanning calorimetry reveals that doping of the DPPC model membrane with individual bisquaternary ammonium compounds (BQAC) decamethoxinum, ethonium, thionium and acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) leads to lowering of the membrane melting temperature (Tm) pointing to membrane fluidization. Combined application of the basic BQAC and acidic ASA causes an opposite effect on Tm (increase), corresponding to the membrane densification. Thus, modulation of the membranotropic effects upon combined use of the drugs studied can be revealed at the level of model membranes. Formation of noncovalent supramol. complexes of the individual BQACs and ASA with DPPC mols., which may be involved in the mechanism of the drug-membrane interaction at the mol. level, is demonstrated by electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry. In the ternary (DPPC + ASA + BQAC) model systems, the stable complexes of the BQAC dication with the ASA anion, which may be responsible for modulation of the membranotropic effects of the drugs, were recorded by ESI mass spectrometry. The proposed approach can be further developed for preliminary evaluation of the combined effects of the drugs at the level of model lipid membranes prior to tests on living organisms.
