Polymerization of hexylmethyldichlorosilane  [14799-94-1] and methylphenyldichlorosilane  [149-74-6] in the presence of Na yielded polysilylenes with polymodal mol. weight distributions. The rapid formation of high-mol.-weight products indicated an addition polymerization mechanism.

The reductive coupling of dichlorosilanes with Na in refluxing PhMe behaved as a chain reaction rather than a simple polycondensation. The high-mol.-weight products were formed near the start of the reaction and were not dependent on equivalent proportions of reactants. The complex mixture of products of widely separated mol. weight could be interpreted by the simultaneous operation of 2 routes to the polymer. One of these was promoted by the presence of organometallic species and could be via an anionic step chain growth. The reaction kinetics suggested that the growing chain had a comparatively long lifetime. Effect of the Na surface area on chain propagation was discussed. Copolymerization experiments showed a large difference in reactivity of aryl and alkyl substituted dichloromethylsilanes.

The decomposition of (ClCH2CH2)2S (I) was studied at 180°, the b.p (about 220°), 350°, and 450° (the last 2 by dropping I into a heated column packed with quartz rings). The products of decomposition at the above temperatures (in percentages of the initial weight of I) are: HCl 8.0, 21.2, 25.8, 31.5; C2H4 4.2 11.2, 7.9, 10.4; C2H4Cl2 6.9, 11.1, -, -; H2S -, -, 3.9, 5.2; CH2:CHCl -, -, 14.6, 19.4; dithiane 1.3, 3.3, trace, trace; (ClC2H4)2S2 5.8, 8.5, 2.0, -; I recovered 56.0, 14.2, 13.0, -; residue 12.2, 25.7, 31, 32; CS2 -, -, 1, l. The residue of the 1st 2 experiments (after heating at 120°/4 mm.) contained 43-4% S and 17-17.5% Cl; that of the last 2 experiments was distributed over the interior of the column and could not be analyzed. The introduction of SiO2 in the 2nd experiment did not produce any CH2:CHCl but gave a small quantity of H2S and some acceleration of the normal reaction; the decomposition of I in glass at the b.p. is not a surface reaction.

[Me2S(O)CH2]2M(CO)4 (M = Cr, Mo) are also accessible by the displacement of olefin from LM(CO)4 (L = norbornadiene) by excess ylide in ether. Pale insoluble [Me2S(O)CH2]3Mo(CO)3 is the sole product from the reaction of L1Mo(CO)3 (L1 = cycloheptatriene) and excess ylide in ether.

While minimal concentrations of decametoxin and of a quinoline deriv (comp. 264) initially gradually decreased the optical d. of staphylococcal cultures and those of coliform bacteria, a Cl-containing phenolic compound (compound 492) caused no changes in the optical d. of the cultures. However, between the second and fourth h of incubation in presence of first 2 compounds the level of optical d. was stabilized and thereafter increased, the increase being associated with increasing rate of biomass accumulation in the exponential phase. The increase in staphylococcal biomass at that phase under the action of decametoxin at subbacteriostatic concentration was slower than that at min. inhibitory concentration The lag-phase in control and in the presence of the first 2 compounds at bacteriostatic and subbacteriostatic concentrations was the same, while at similar concentrations compound 492 increased the lag-phase ∼2-fold. Compound 492 at min. bacteriostatic and subbacteriostatic rates was neutral with regard to substrate utilization by Escherichia coli, while the first 2 compounds by activating and inducing enzymic systems in the bacteria permitted utilizing the carbohydrates present in the medium, which probably resulted in the intensive biomass increment observed in the exponential phase.

Obesity is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer. In theory, the obesity problem could be solved by the adherence to a calorie-restricted diet, but that is not generally achieved in practice. An alternative is a pharmacol. approach, using compounds that trigger the same metabolic changes associated with calorie restriction. Here, I expand in the pharmacol. direction by identifying compounds that induce liver gene signature profiles that mimic those induced by calorie restriction. Using gene expression profiles from mice and rat, I identify corticosteroids, PPAR agonists and some antibacterial/antifungal as candidate compounds mimicking the response to calorie restriction in the liver gene signatures.
