Treatment of BrCH2CHBrCO2R (R = Me, Et, CHMe2, CMe3) with R1ONH2 (R1 = Me, Et, Me2CH) and Et3N gave R1ONHCH2CHBrCO2R, which cyclized upon heating in Et3N-MeCN to give I, the trans isomer being formed predominantly. Similarly prepared were II (same R1) with the trans isomer predominant or exclusive. III (trans/cis = 3:1) was also obtained. The N inversion barriers in I–III were 130-138 kJ/mol at 120°.
