BrCH2CHBrCOBr (I) reacts vigorously with Zn in absolute Et2O to give CH2:CHCO2Et (II) (55%), EtBr (6-8%), and HBr (42%). Steps for the reaction have been suggested. I was prepared by treating BrCH2CHBrCO2H with P and Br. The Hell-Volhard-Zelinskii reaction on BrCH2CH2CO2H (anilide, m. 119-20°; Pr β-bromopropionate, b. 76-8°, nD20 1.467), gave only BrCH2CH2COBr (III). Zn with BrCH2CHBrCOCl gave II also. Zn and III yielded 60% BrCH2CH2CO2Et.
