Effects of N deposition on the quality and quantity of soil organic matter in a boreal forest: Contrasting roles of ammonium and nitrate

Elevated nitrogen (N) deposition plays a critical role in soil organic matter (SOM) transformation, but the responses of the quantity and quality of SOM to ammonium and nitrate fertilization remain unclear. In this work, a 6-year field experiment amended with ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) and potassium nitrate (KNO3) fertilizers at four rates of 0, 10, 20, and 40 kg N ha(-1) yr(-1) was conducted in a boreal forest. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) analysis and elemental analysis were used to investigate the chemical composition and soil organic carbon (SOC) contents in bulk soils and two density fractions (light fraction < 1.70 g cm(-3) and heavy fraction > 1.70 g cm(-3)). Soil microbial community composition was determined based on phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) analysis. Results showed that the SOC contents in the organic and mineral layers under nitrate addition were significantly increased by 27-87%. By contrast, ammonium addition significantly decreased the SOC contents in the organic layer by 28-54%. Nitrate addition increased relative proportions of acetic acid in the light fraction and toluene in bulk soil, but decreased relative abundance of phenol in bulk soil, indicating that more plant-derived input contributed to the increase of SOC. Contrastingly, ammonium addition increased the proportions of benzene in bulk soil and pyrrole as well as the mineralization index (pyrrole/phenol) in the heavy fraction, suggesting more advanced mineralization degree of SOM. Moreover, ammonium addition altered microbial community structure with a higher ratio of fungi/bacteria (F/B) while nitrate addition had little effect on soil microbial community. Overall, our findings highlight the contrasting roles of ammonium and nitrate in SOM dynamics, which should be distinguished to accurately predict the responses of SOC sequestration to N deposition especially in N-limited boreal forests.

Palladium extraction from chloride solutions with the disulfide of bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)dithiophosphinic acid

Palladium extraction from chloride solutions with the disulfide of bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)dithiophosphinic acid (L) is reported in this work. The rate of palladium extraction with the disulfide in toluene is slow but it increases in the presence of trioctylamine (TOA). Within 5 min, the degree of palladium recovery (epsilon) is 99.6%, whereas in the absence of TOA, it is only 19.0% in 10 min. The extraction systems based on the disulfide and TOA mixtures exhibit fast kinetics, high selectivity and can be used for the extraction of palladium from various industrial solutions.

Inhibitory effects of functionalized polycarboxylate retarder on aberrant thickening phenomena of oil well cement at high temperature

Aberrant thickening of cement slurry caused by polycarboxylate retarders mainly refers to abnormal gelation and thickening time reversal (TTR) when temperature reaches above 120 degrees C. These phenomena would directly jeopardize cementing operation and hinder the application of polycarboxylate retarders in oil and gas exploitation. Herein, two functionalized polycarboxylate retarders were synthesized to overcome the challenges in complex conditions. The incorporation of isoprenyl oxy poly(ethyleneglycol) ether (TPEG) and [3-(methacryloylamino) propyl] trimethyl ammonium chloride (MAPTAC) was capable of preventing unfavorable crosslinking and chelation reaction between cement grains and polymer, thereby avoiding abnormal gelation. It was also found that the hydrophobic association behavior of long side chain in TPEG could cause the gradual release of carboxyl groups at elevated temperature, which was unfavorable for TTR inhibition. When the TPEG was replaced by N-Vinyl-2-Pyrrolidinone (NVP), its retarding effect gradually weakened when temperature rose from 130 degrees C to 150 degrees C, and excellent inhibition of TTR was achieved. Modification of NaCl structure as a sodium reduction strategy in meat products: An overview

Sodium chloride (NaCl) is an indispensable ingredient in meat products, but the consumption of high doses of sodium contained in their formulations may bring about negative health implications. The replacement of NaCl by other salts in meat products has been a technological challenge. Accordingly, this review highlights the importance of NaCl over other sodium and non-sodium salts in the saltiness perception and proposes the use of reduced-size and shapes of NaCl to maximize saltiness perception, while using less NaCl dosages in meat products. However, the effect of matrix components (water, proteins and fats) on the final salty taste is of special consideration. To counteract the effect of the matrix components, two main routes of incorporation of different NaCl types in meat products are discussed: encapsulation and protection of NaCl by the hydrophobic component of the meat product. Given the limited number of publications using this potential strategy, more studies on the application of these technological strategies are required.

Visible-light-induced activation of peroxymonosulfate by TiO2 nano-tubes arrays for enhanced degradation of bisphenol A

TiO2 photocatalysis and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation can exhibit a good performance in ultraviolet light but a less activity in visible light (VL). Herein, the TiO2 nano-tubes arrays (TiO2NTAs) and PMS were combined to degrade bisphenol A (BPA) under VL irradiation. Surprisingly, about 94.6% of BPA was removed in TiO2 NTAs/PMS/VL system within 30 min, which was much higher than that of TiO2 NTAs/VL (20.1%) and PMS/VL (9.4%) systems. A series of spectroscopic characterizations and photoelectrochemical measurements confirmed the formation of PMS-TiO2 complex with VL response, which can be excited by VL to transfer electrons to the conduction band (CB) of TiO2 for activating PMS. The quenching tests and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra indicated that SO4 center dot- and center dot OH were responsible for BPA degradation, and then the possible degradation pathways of BPA were proposed. Humic acid (HA) and chloride ions (Cl-) significantly enhanced the BPA degradation, while bicarbonate (HCO3-) and phosphate (H2PO4-) exhibited an inhibition effect. Moreover, TiO2 NTAs/PMS/VL system displayed an enhanced BPA degradation in tap water and drinking water compared with deionized water, and as an immobilization catalyst which fabricated on Ti plate, TiO2 NTAs exhibited excellent stability and separability without complex catalyst separation/recovery processes. We believe this work will provide a new insight of the VL-induced photocatalytic PMS activation in practical water treatment.

Kinetic study of microwave enhanced mercury desorption for the regeneration of spent activated carbon supported mercuric chloride catalysts

A novel microwave enhanced mercury desorption process was proposed for the regeneration of the spent activated carbon supported mercuric chloride catalysts. The mercury species desorption kinetics were investigated in detail by TG experiments, the overall apparent activation energy of 128.4 kJ/mol, the main reaction activation energy of 95.84 kJ/mol and the adsorption energy of 32.56 kJ/mol were confirmed with the combination of the model-free method and the DMol(3) DFT module of Materials Studio package. The thermal desorption of HgCl2 and Hg2Cl2 were mainly between 473 K and 670 K, and the dominant mechanism for the desorption process was determined as second-order-model by the model-fitting method and the Z(alpha) master-plot method. Furthermore, the microwave enhancement degree of 26.36% was proved by the microwave heating experiment for the mercury desorption within 1500 s at 673 K, and the mercury content was significantly reduced from 19500 mg/kg to 149 mg/kg, which met the requirement of US land disposal restrictions (<260 mg/kg). Moreover, the preliminary activation of the spent activated carbon after microwave heating was demonstrated from the results of XRD, SEM and nitrogen adsorption analysis. Meanwhile, the HgCl2 solution with the concentration of 40-50 g/L could be effectively prepared by the water leaching of the condensate of mercury species, which could be used to regenerate the catalyst by soaking adsorption with activated carbon after microwave heating. Finally, a novel microwave enhanced mercury desorption process was proposed, which can synchronous realize the harmless and recovery of the spent activated carbon supported mercuric chloride catalysts. Locomotor deficits induced by lumbar muscle inflammation involve spinal microglia and are independent of KCC2 expression in a mouse model of complete spinal transection

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is associated with damage to musculoskeletal tissues of the spine. Recent findings show that pain and inflammatory processes caused by musculoskeletal injury mediate plastic changes in the spinal cord. These changes could impede the adaptive plastic changes responsible for functional recovery. The underlying mechanism remains unclear, but may involve the microglia-BDNF-KCC2 pathway, which is implicated in sensitization of dorsal horn neurons in neuropathic pain and in the regulation of spinal excitability by step-training. In the present study, we examined the effects of step-training and lumbar muscle inflammation induced by complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA) on treadmill locomotion in a mouse model of complete spinal transection. The impact on locomotor recovery of each of these interventions alone or in combination were examined in addition to changes in microglia and KCC2 expression in the dorsal and ventral horns of the sublesional spinal cord. Results show that angular motion at the hip, knee and ankle joint during locomotion were decreased by CFA injection and improved by step-training. Moreover, CFA injection enhanced the expression of the microglial marker Ibal in both ventral and dorsal horns, with or without step-training. However, this change was not associated with a modulation of KCC2 expression, suggesting that locomotor deficits induced by inflammation are independent of KCC2 expression in the sublesional spinal cord. These results indicate that musculoskeletal injury hinders locomotor recovery after SCI and that microglia is involved in this effect.

Broadband dielectric spectroscopy for monitoring temperature-dependent chloride ion motion in BiOCl plates

The dielectric properties and electrical conduction mechanism of bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) plates synthesized using chloramine-T as the chloride ion source were investigated. Thermally-activated structure rebuilding was monitored using broadband dielectric spectroscopy, which showed that the onset temperature of this process was 283 K. This rebuilding was related to the introduction of free chloride ions into [Bi2O2](2+) layers and their growth, which increased the intensity of the (101) diffraction peak. The electrical conductivity and dielectric permittivity were related to the movement of chloride ions between plates (in the low-frequency region), the interplanar motion of Cl- ions at higher frequencies, vibrations of these ions, and charge carrier hopping at frequencies above 10 kHz. The influence of the free chloride ion concentration on the electrical conductivity was also described. Structure rebuilding was associated with a lower concentration of free chloride ions, which significantly decreased the conductivity. According to the analysis, the BiOCl plate conductivity was related to the movement of Cl- ions, not electrons.

The effect of natural and artificial periphytic substrates with biofloc system on shrimp Penaeus vannamei (Boone 1931) culture: growth and immune response

A 120-day experiment was conducted to understand the growth and immunomodulatory response of Penaeus vannamei reared in biofloc-integrated periphyton system-like natural substrates like bamboo (NS1), sugarcane bagasse (NS2), artificial substrates like polyvinyl chloride mat (AS1), agricultural shed net (AS2), and a control group without biofloc and substrate. Experiments were carried out in 500-L fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) tanks at a stocking density of 100 nos/m(3) (0.256 g). Shrimps reared in natural substrate-based treatments, (NS1 and NS2) recorded highest average body weight (ABW) and survival followed by artificial ones (AS1 and AS2), and were significantly higher (P < 0.01) compared with control. Significantly higher chlorophyll(a), ash-free dry matter (AFDM), and THB load were recorded in NS (1 and 2) followed by AS (1 and 2). Contrastingly, the Vibrio load was higher in control than treatments. Relative percentage survival was higher (P < 0.01) in treatments when challenged against V. parahaemolyticus. Serum protein level, phenoloxidase activity, and superoxide dismutase assay were significantly higher in natural and artificial substrate groups when compared to control. Immunomodulatory effects through immune gene study revealed a two fold to four fold upregulation in cytMn-SOD and mtMn-SOD genes in NS groups. Similarly, the lysozyme and prophenoloxidase genes were significantly upregulated in the treatment groups. The results conclude that biofloc with natural followed by artificial periphytic substrates were observed to deliver better performances, protective response, and immunomodulatory effects in pacific white shrimp P. vannamei culture. Balanced chemical reaction does not necessarily reveal either the individual elementary reactions by which a reaction occurs or its rate law. Phase Transition from the Interdigitated to Bilayer Membrane of a Cationic Surfactant Induced by Addition of Hydrophobic Molecules

Although the transition between a bilayer and an interdigitated membrane of a surfactant and lipid has been widely known for long, its mechanism remains unclear. This study reveals the transition mechanism of a cationic surfactant, dioctadecyldimethylammonium chloride (DODAC), through experiments and theoretical calculations. Experimentally, the transition from the interdigitated to bilayer structure in the gel phase of DODAC is found to be induced by adding hydrophobic molecules such as n-alkane and its derivatives. Further addition induces a different transition to another bilayer phase. Our theory, considering the competition of the electrostatic interaction between cationic headgroups and the hydrophobic interaction emerging at the alkyl-chain ends exposed to water, reproduces these two phase transitions. In addition, changes in alkyl-chain packing in the membranes at these transitions are reproduced. The underlying mechanism is that the interdigitated membrane is formed at a small additive content due to electrostatic repulsion. As the energetic disadvantage with respect to the hydrophobic interaction becomes dominant as the content increases, the transition to the bilayer occurs at a specific content. The bilayer-bilayer transition at a higher content is induced by the change in the balance of these interactions. Based on a similar concept, we suggest the mechanism of the additive-induced bilayer-interdigitated transition of phospholipids, i.e., neutrally charged (zwitterionic) surfactants.
