Photochromic materials have been widely used in many fields such as electro-optical functional materials and novel bio-materials. In this study, six cyanine-based dithienylethene compounds were successfully developed, and their photoisomerization and emission change properties were fully investigated. The results indicated that the UV/vis absorption of pyridinium-based compounds displayed near-IR absorption, while their fluorescence showed quenching emission as a result of the changes in structure from open-ring isomers to closed-ring isomers. Therefore these cyanine-based compounds could be applied not only in photochromic materials, but also they could be used as fluorescence switches. Accordingly, one of these compounds was successfully used in the biol. imaging of living cells. These results suggest that cyanine-based dithienylethenes may be used as photoswitchable bio-materials in the future.

Development of a photosensitizing system that can reversibly control the generation of singlet oxygen (1O2) is of great interest for photodynamic therapy (PDT). Recently several photosensitizer-photochromic-switch dyads were reported as a potential means of the 1O2 control in PDT. However, the delivery of such a homogeneous mol. dyad as designed (e.g., optimal molar ratio) is extremely challenging in living systems. Herein we show a Zr-MOF nanoplatform, demonstrating energy transfer-based 1O2 controlled PDT. Our strategy allows for tuning the ratios between photosensitizer and the switch mol., enabling maximum control of 1O2 generation. Meanwhile, the MOF provides proximal placement of the functional entities for efficient intermol. energy transfer. As a result, the MOF nanoparticle formulation showed enhanced PDT efficacy with superior 1O2 control compared to that of homogeneous mol. analogs.

Benzyltributylammonium periodate (BzBu3NIO4) was prepared easily in high yield in neat water. The compound crystallized with two cations and two anions per asym. unit and a space group of Pna21 was determined by single-crystal x-ray diffraction. It was used practically in the clean and selective epoxidation of olefins and oxygenation of saturated hydrocarbons catalyzed by manganese (III) porphyrins in water/ethanol as a green media. The catalyst could be reused without noticeable loss of activity, and the oxidant’s byproduct (BzBu3NIO3) could also be reused. The efficiency of the oxidation system depends critically upon the steric hindrances and electronic structures of both the nitrogen donors and Mn-catalysts. Some evidences suggest the involvement of a high valent Mn-oxo species as well as a six-coordinate [(L)(Por)Mn-OIO3] complex in the oxidation reactions.

Cytarabine is one of the most efficient drugs in the treatment of hematol. malignancies. In this work, we describe the synthesis and characterization of two different polymer conjugates of cytarabine that were designed for the controlled release of cytarabine within the leukemia cells. Reactive copolymers of N-(2-hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide (HPMA) and 3-(3-methacrylamidopropa-noyl)thiazolidine-2-thione) or 3-(N-methacryloylglycyl-phenylalanylleucylglycyl)thiazolidine-2-thione were used in the study as reactive polymer precursors for reaction with cytarabine. The enzymic release of cytarabine from the conjugate containing a GFLG spacer utilizing cathepsin B was verified. In addition to enzymolysis, the pH-dependent hydrolysis of cytarabine from both copolymers was also confirmed. Approx. 40 % and 20 % of the drug was released by spontaneous hydrolysis at pH 7.4 within 72 h from the polymer conjugates with the GFLG and beta-Ala spacers, resp. At pH 6.0, the spontaneous hydrolysis slowed down, and less than 10 % of the drug was liberated within 72 h. The results of the cytotoxicity evaluation of the polymer conjugates in vitro against various cell lines showed that the cytotoxicity of the polymer conjugates is approx. three times lower in comparison to free cytarabine.

O-Glycosylation of 4-(substituted benzyl)-1,2-dihydro-3H-pyrazol-3-one derivative was facilitated by introduction of electron-withdrawing substituents, such as an acetyl group, at the N1-position of the pyrazole ring. 1-Acetyl-4-(substituted benzyl)-1,2-dihydro-3H-pyrazol-3-one reacted with 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acyl-α-D-glucopyranosyl bromide in the presence of potassium carbonate in acetonitrile to provide the 1-acetyl-4-(substituted benzyl)-3-(2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acyl-β-D-glucopyranosyloxy)-1H-pyrazole derivative in high yield. In this contribution, two novel tetra-/triphenylethene-dithienylethene-BF2bdk triads (TDB1 and TDB2) were designed and prepared by appending tetra-/triphenylethene and BF2bdk moieties at the termini of dithienylethene unit. Before irradiation with blue light at 460-470 nm, they showed an intense emission in solution and in the PMMA film state, suggesting that the AIE effect of tetra-/triphenylethene was inhibited, and functioned only as electron-donating groups. Moreover, upon alternating irradiation with blue/NIR light, TDB1 and TDB2 displayed effective fluorescent switching behaviors and NIR photochromism in toluene and the PMMA film. Therefore, they would be utilized as novel visible light-triggered switches integrated in smart optoelectronic materials.
