A new photochromic diarylethene dyad based on perylene diimide (PDI-DTE) was synthesized. The photochromic reaction of PDI-DTE induced the significant change of the absorption spectra and fluorescence intensity. The color of PDI-DTE in THF solution was not changed obviously upon UV irradiation, while the fluorescence intensity is increased unexpectedly with the photochromic cyclization of the diarylethene units. With not visible change of color accompanied to the enhanced fluorescence, PDI-DTE can be potentially applied to anti-counterfeiting technol.

Its structure was confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS (ESI). As expected, dithienylethene NDM exhibited distinctive multi-modulated photochromic properties by solvent, acid and cyanide anion stimulation. The droplets are obtained by a glass capillary microfluidic technique by dispersing into PVA solution that facilitates planar anchoring of the liquid-crystal mols. at the droplet surface, as confirmed by the observation of normal incidence selective circular polarized reflection in all directions from the core of individual droplet. Photoirradiation of the droplets furnishes dynamic reflection colors without thermal relaxation, whose wavelength can be tuned reversibly by variation of the irradiation time. The results provided clear evidence on the phototunable reflection in all directions.

Chiral nematic liquid crystals – otherwise referred to as cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) – are self-organized helical superstructures that find practical application in, for example, thermog., reflective displays, tuneable color filters and mirrorless lasing. Dynamic, remote and three-dimensional control over the helical axis of CLCs is desirable, but challenging. For example, the orientation of the helical axis relative to the substrate can be changed from perpendicular to parallel by applying an alternating-current elec. field, by changing the anchoring conditions of the substrate, or by altering the topog. of the substrate’s surface; sep., in-plane rotation of the helical axis parallel to the substrate can be driven by a direct-current field. Here we report three-dimensional manipulation of the helical axis of a CLC, together with inversion of its handedness, achieved solely with a light stimulus. We use this technique to carry out light-activated, wide-area, reversible two-dimensional beam steering-previously accomplished using complex integrated systems and optical phased arrays. During the three-dimensional manipulation by light, the helical axis undergoes, in sequence, a reversible transition from perpendicular to parallel, followed by in-plane rotation on the substrate surface. Such reversible manipulation depends on exptl. parameters such as cell thickness, surface anchoring condition, and pitch length. Because there is no thermal relaxation, the system can be driven either forwards or backwards from any light-activated intermediate state. We also describe reversible photocontrol between a two-dimensional diffraction state, a one-dimensional diffraction state and a diffraction ‘off’ state in a bilayer cell.

Alk. phosphatase (ALP) is an important biomarker for many diseases. Therefore, the sensitive and accurate detection of ALP activity is essential for fundamental biochem. processes and clinic diagnosis. Herein, we design a fluorescent on-off-on switch for sensitive and visual detection of ALP activity. Meanwhile, mass barcode-modified quantum dots (QDs) amplified the LC-MS/MS detection signal in complex biol. samples. Firstly, the QDs were modified with phosphorylated Gly-Gly-Phe-Phe-Tyr (OPO3H2) peptide (GGFFYp) and the mass barcode. The fluorescence of QDs-SS-Yp was quenched by fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between QDs-SS-Yp and dansyl chloride (DNS). ALP can hydrolyze the phosphorylated peptide to form peptide self-assemblies on the QDs-SS-Yp surfaces. The effective separation distance between the QDs-SS-Yp donor and DNS acceptor becomes larger, restricting FRET between the QDs-SS-Yp and DNS. At this point, the obvious QDs-SS-Yp fluorescence signal can be restored. However, the absence of ALP results in no peptide self-assembly on the QDs-SS-Yp surface and no obvious QDs-SS-Yp fluorescence signal was detected. Therefore, the ALP activity can be analyzed according to the degree of fluorescence restoration by the fluorescence on-off-on switch. Finally, the small tag mols. obtained by cleaving the disulfide bond of the QDs-SS-Yp as a mass barcode were used to amplify the LC-MS/MS detection signal. The proposed approach shows a good linear relationship (from 0.01 to 2.4 U L-1) and has the significant advantage of a low detection limit of 0.001 U L-1.
