In this report, L-diphenylalanine-decorated tetraphenylporphyrin (TPPtFFC) was synthesized and self-assembled into regular nano-architectures. The morphol. of the assemblies varied with the concentration of TPPtFFC. The absorption spectra of the nanoparticles show the Soret band merges with the Q bands and redistributes with great red-shift, indicative of the formation of J-aggregates of the porphyrin mols. The fluorescence emission of the nanoparticles is merged and red-shifted to near-IR region. Studies of absorption and fluorescence spectra reveal an indispensable role of diphenylalanine group in the formation of J-aggregates. The Raman spectra disclose that diprotonation of the porphyrin core contributes to delocalized coherent excited states in the nanoparticles. The pos. Cotton effect in CD spectra corresponding to the Soret band of TPPtFFC in solution confirms the formation of J-aggregates with right-handed chirality of the dipole moment. This report will shed light on the rational design of porphyrin-peptide conjugates to mimic naturally light-harvesting complexes.

The functionality of interfaces in hybrid inorganic/organic (opto)electronic devices is determined by the alignment of the resp. frontier energy levels at both sides of the heterojunctions. Controlling the interface electronic landscape is a key element for achieving favorable level alignment for energy and charge transfer processes. Here, it is shown that the electronic properties of polar ZnO surfaces can be reversibly modified using organic photochromic switches. By employing a range of surface characterization techniques combined with d. functional theory calculations, it is demonstrated that self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of photochromic phosphonic acid diarylethenes (PA-DAEs) can be employed to reversibly change the electronic properties of polar ZnO/SAM structures by light stimuli. The HOMO level of PA-DAE is raised by 0.7 eV and the lowest unoccupied one lowered by 0.9 eV, resp., upon illumination by UV light and the levels shift back to their original position upon illumination by green light. The results thus provide a pathway to tailor hybrid interface electronic properties in a dynamic manner upon simple light illumination, which can be exploited to reversibly tune the elec. properties of photoswitchable (opto)electronic devices.

Two novel donor-π-acceptor-type dithienylethene derivatives I [n = 0, 1], in which the triphenylamine group acts as electron donor and the formyl group functions as electron acceptor, was developed. Their structures were confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS (ESI). Investigation of their photochromic properties indicated that they had good photochromic behavior and excellent fatigue resistance on irradiation with UV or visible light. DFT calculations further validated these exptl. results for photochromic behavior. Moreover, these compounds could be utilized as versatile building blocks to construct novel near-IR photochromic materials.

A series of dithienylcyclopentenes containing axially chiral 1,1′-binaphthyl units were successfully synthesized by a Suzuki-Miyaura protocol. All these compounds exhibited photochem. reversible isomerization with thermal stability in both organic solvent and a liquid crystal (LC) host. When doping into an achiral LC host, some of them exhibited very high helical twisting powers. Reversible reflection wavelength tuning in the visible region and LC phase switching between nematic and cholesteric upon light irradiation were demonstrated.
