All-visible-light controlled fluorescence switching is more promising for bioimaging. Constructing dual-color fluorescent bisthienylethene (BTE) systems are quite challenging. Here, all-visible-light triggered dual-color fluorescence switching was achieved in a color-specific switching manner in a solid-state by associating the photochromic BTE core with a blue emissive phenanthroimidazole (PI) unit. Unique emission behavior caused by J-aggregation of the coplanar PI unit was crucial, which suggested a novel strategy for constructing dual-color fluorescent photoswitching. Moreover, a ‘turn-off’ fluorescence photoswitching was demonstrated in solution and PMMA films owing to the energy transfer from the PI moiety to a ring-closed isomer of the BTE moiety. Remarkably, an all-visible-light patterning application for information storage medium was developed with these compounds BTE-P1 was successfully utilized in cellular imaging for efficient fluorescence switching.

Catalytic systems containing mainly mononuclear (CuCl42-) or dinuclear (Cu2Cl62-) tributylbenzylammonium chlorocuprates are prepared by adsorption on silica surfaces of different structures (Aerosil and Silokhrom). Using ESR, XANES, and electronic spectroscopy, the CuCl42- ions are shown to be reduced rapidly under conditions of C-Cl bond metathesis, whereas the dinuclear chlorocuprates are relatively stable. A correlation between the number of copper ions in the chlorocuprate anion and its catalytic activity is established: the mononuclear complexes are several times more active than their dinuclear counterparts.

The development of novel solid-state fluorescence switches, particularly triggered by visible light, is of increasing interest for the potential application in optical data storage and super-resolution fluorescence microscopies. In this study, two carbazole-dithienylethene-BF2bdk triads CDB1 and CDB2, suspending carbazole and BF2bdk moieties on both sides of dithienylethene unit, have been developed. They exhibit blue-/NIR light-controlled photochromism with solvent-dependent characteristics. Moreover, CDB1 (o) reveals blue-/NIR light-induced reversible fluorescent switching behaviors in toluene, chloroform, poly(Me methacrylate) (PMMA) film, and powder state, while its analog CDB2 (o) in the powder state exhibits no fluorescence due to a strong intermol. π-π stacking interaction, and the fluorescent switching performance is observed only in toluene and PMMA film. The d. functional theory calculations further validate the differences in their optical properties in the solution and powder states.

Developing new visible light-triggered NIR photochromic sensors for the accurate detection of volatile amine vapors in the solid state is highly desirable. Herein, three novel dithienylethene-bridged difluoroboron β-diketonate dyes Di-BF2bdk-DTE1-Di-BF2bdk-DTE3, in which BF2bdk group not only functions as electron acceptor but also responds to amine vapors, have been developed. Upon alternating irradiation with blue light (460-470 nm) and near-IR light (760-770 nm), they displayed excellent NIR photochromism and fluorescent switching behaviors in toluene and in the PMMA film. Moreover, they showed an unprecedented triple sensing performance for volatile n-propylamine vapor in the PMMA film state (fluorescent-colorimetric-colorimetric). The authors have studied the conductance of individual optically switchable dithienylethene mols. in both their conducting closed configuration and nonconducting open configuration, using the technique of repeatedly formed break-junctions. The authors employed pyridine groups to link the mols. to gold electrodes to achieve relatively well-defined mol. contacts and stable conductance. For the closed form of each mol., the authors observed a peak in the conductance histogram constructed without any data selection, allowing the authors to determine the conductance of the fully stretched mols. For two different dithienylethene derivatives, these closed-configuration conductances were (3.3 ± 0.5) × 10-5G0 and (1.5 ± 0.5) × 10-6G0, where G0 is the conductance quantum. For the open configuration of the mols., the existence of elec. conduction via the mol. was evident in traces of conductance vs. junction displacement, but the conductance of the fully stretched mols. was less than the noise floor of the authors’ measurement. The authors can set a lower limit of 30 for the on/off ratio for the simplest dithienylethene derivative the authors have studied. D. functional theory calculations predict an on/off ratio consistent with this result.

Despite impressive advances in the construction of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the formation of networks from peptidic ligands is difficult, though they are sought after for their modularity and biocompatibility. Herein the authors present a peptide-metal framework that consists of helical oligoproline ligands and Zn/K (or Zn/Rb). The crystalline network contains pleated nanosheets with the metal ions aligned in strings. This unprecedented architecture derives from under-appreciated London dispersion interactions between the oligoproline ligands that play in concert with the metal coordination to create the network. Hence, the secondary structure of the peptidic ligand represents an addnl. control element for the creation of new MOF architectures. The authors anticipate that the authors′ results will instruct the design of further peptidic MOFs and enable the generation of versatile biocompatible materials.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are regarded as a promising and emerging alternative for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) due to their cost-effectiveness and environmentally sustainable nature. Formulation of new DESs and thorough investigation of their physicochem. properties have been on the rise ever since potential applications of DES have been realized. The present study reports a new series of DES based on benzyltrimethylammonium chloride and benzyltributylammonium chloride as hydrogen bond acceptor (HBAs) with three ethylene glycols and glycerols as hydrogen bond donors (HBDs). The current work includes the synthesis, characterization, and investigation of the thermophys. properties of a series of DES systems. The studied properties include d., ρ, speed of sound, u, viscosity, η, refractive index, nD, and elec. conductivity, σ, for all DESs in the temperature range from 283.15 to 343.15 K. The observed trends in properties like d., speed of sound, viscosity, and refractive indexes were correlated with appropriate equations, and some industrially useful parameters have also been derived. An insight about the internal association in these DESs has been analyzed through the rheol. and FTIR spectroscopy. The newly synthesized DESs have also been investigated for their efficiency in aqueous biphasic system (ABS) formation. This systematic study revealed the influence of both HBD/HBA and temperature on the physicochem. characteristics of the DESs.

A fast and efficient microwave-assisted solid phase peptide synthesis (MW-SPPS) of a 51mer peptide, the main heparin-binding site (60-110) of human pleiotrophin (hPTN), using 2-chlorotrityl chloride resin (CLTR-Cl) following the 9-fluorenylmethyloxycarbonyl/tert-Bu (Fmoc/tBu) methodol. and with the standard N,N’-diisopropylcarbodiimide/1-hydroxybenzotriazole (DIC/HOBt) coupling reagents, is described. An MW-SPPS protocol was for the first time successfully applied to the acid labile CLTR-Cl for the faster synthesis of long peptides (51mer peptide) and with an enhanced purity in comparison to conventional SPPS protocols. The synthesis of such long peptides is not trivial and it is generally achieved by recombinant techniques. The desired linear peptide was obtained in only 30 h of total processing time and in 51% crude yield, in which 60% was the purified product obtained with 99.4% purity. The synthesized peptide was purified by reversed phase high performance liquid chromatog. (RP-HPLC) and identified by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Then, the regioselective formation of the two disulfide bridges of hPTN 60-110 was successfully achieved by a two-step procedure, involving an oxidative folding step in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) to form the Cys77-Cys109 bond, followed by iodine oxidation to form the Cys67-Cys99 bond.
