Nitrosamine formation has been associated with wastewater-impacted waters, but specific precursors within wastewater effluents have not been identified. Experiments indicated that nitrosamines form in low yields from quaternary amines, and that the nitrosamines form from the quaternary amines themselves, not just lower order amine impurities. Polymeric and benzylated quaternary amines were more potent precursors than monomeric quaternary alkylamines. Pretreatment of quaternary amines with ozone or free Cl, which deactivate lower order amine impurities, did not significantly reduce nitrosamine formation. The nitrosamine formation pathway is unclear but experiments indicated that transformation of quaternary amines to lower order amine precursors via Hofmann elimination was not involved. Experiments suggest that the pathway may involve quaternary amine degradation by amidogen or chloramino radicals formed from chloramines. Quaternary amines are significant constituents of consumer products, including shampoos, detergents, and fabric softeners. Although quaternary amines may be removed by sedimentation during wastewater treatment, their importance should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. The high loadings from consumer products may enable the portion not removed to serve as precursors.

High-contrast (>60) reversible fluorescence switching was achieved in the 1D nanowires, solid of BTE-CNPH and also in a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) film loaded with 1% BTE-CNPH under the alternative irradiation by 365 nm and visible light. Interestingly, the nanowire-like assembly morphol. of BTE-CNPH in aqueous THF (THF) solution of specific concentration was observed to translate into amorphous pieces gradually upon prolonged irradiation by the 365 nm, accompanying with photo-tunable AIE emission.

Zirconium-89 is a positron-emitting radionuclide of high interest for medical imaging applications with positron emission tomog. (PET). For the introduction of this radiometal into biol. active targeting vectors, the chelating agent desferrioxamine B (DFO) is commonly applied. However, DFO is known to form 89Zr complexes of limited in vivo stability. Herein we describe the rational design and chem. development of a new macrocyclic four-hydroxamate-bearing chelating agent-1,10,19,28-tetrahydroxy-1,5,10,14,19,23,28,32-octaazacyclohexatriacontan-2,6,11,15,20,24,29,33-octaone (CTH36)-for the stable complexation of Zr4+. For this purpose, we first performed computational studies to determine the optimal chelator geometry before we developed different synthesis pathways toward the target structures. The best results were obtained using an efficient solution-phase-based synthesis strategy toward the target chelating agent. To enable efficient and chemoselective conjugation to biomols., a tetrazine-modified variant of CTH36 was also developed. The excellent conjugation characteristics of the so-functionalized chelator were demonstrated on the example of the model peptide TCO-c(RGDfK). We determined the optimal 89Zr radiolabeling parameters for CTH36 as well as its bioconjugate, and found that 89Zr radiolabeling proceeds efficiently under very mild reaction conditions. Finally, we performed comparative complex stability tests for 89Zr-CHT36-c(RGDfK) and 89Zr-DFO-c(RGDfK), showing improved complex stability for the newly developed chelator CTH36.

Two red fluorescent triads containing photochromic dithienylethene moiety linked to two 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) via acetylene bond, 1a or single bond, 1b were synthesized and characterized. Although no evident absorption and NMR spectra changes were observed upon irradiation with visible light, the absorption and fluorescence spectra of 1a and 1b are remarkably solvent dependent, in contrast to those of the reference BODIPY-thienyl compounds 2a and 2b, which are essentially solvent independent. Fluorescence intensities of 1a and 1b decreased as the solvent polarity increased, and the fluorescence decay showed two exponentials in polar solvents other than n-hexane. With the aim of combining the potential anticancer properties of both clotrimazole, an imidazole based antifungal agent, and Ag(I) N-heterocyclic carbenes, 13 novel Ag(I) N-heterocyclic carbene complexes derived from clotrimazole were synthesized. The complexes were fully characterized, and the partition coefficient of each provides a measure of hydrophobicity. The antiproliferative properties of the complexes against cancerous and noncancerous cell lines found optimum cytotoxicity when the complex displays an intermediate lipophilicity, which describes a complex that possesses both water-soluble groups and lipophilic aromatic groups. The Ag complexes were screened on a synthetic biomembrane-like device using a chip-based phospholipid-coated Pt/Hg electrode embedded in a flow cell system. The results are recorded as rapid cyclic voltammograms (RCVs), which give insight into the interactions of the complexes with a cell membrane. The principle of intermediate lipophilicity also applies to the monolayer interaction to which the Ag atom significantly implements an irreversibility.

Based on the self-assembly capability of the core segment (GNNQQNY) of yeast prion Sup35, we design and synthesize a series of structurally related precursors for the enzymic formation of hydrogels. We found that, with the catalysis of alk. phosphatase, the precursor becomes a hydrogelator that self-assembles in water to form nanofibers with an average width less than ten nanometers. Interestingly, the introduction of an amyloid segment into a cytotoxic precursor (N’ffyp: D-1P) is able to abrogate the cytotoxicity of the precursor, making the resulting peptide cell compatible. This work contributes a new insight into the use of enzymes to form cell compatible hydrogels of peptide cross-β spine.

These DESs were applied to vortex-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction of Sudan dyes from food samples, followed by high-performance liquid chromatog. determination The influencing parameters, including the type of DES, amount of DES, extraction time, solution pH and salt addition, were investigated and optimized. Under the optimized conditions, a linear range of 2-1000 ng mL-1 with determination coefficients of <0.999 was obtained. Limits of detection and limits of quantification were in the range of 0.5 to 1 ng mL-1 and 2 to 3 ng mL-1, resp. The proposed method was successfully used in the determination of Sudan dyes in chili sauce, chili powder and ketchup, and satisfactory recoveries of between 89.9 and 119.3% were obtained, with relative standard deviations in the range of 0.1-6.8%. The proposed method is simple, green and efficient, and can be applied to determine Sudan dyes in complex matrixes.

A series of photochromic liquid crystal dithienylcyclopentene derivatives I (n = 4, 5, 6, 7) was synthesized from the initial material 2-chloro-5-methylthiophene. They were characterized by 1H NMR, high resolution mass spectrometer, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM) with a hot stage. All of them exhibited excellent photochem. reversible isomerization between the open-ring form and the closed-ring form in both organic solvents and LC media, resulting in the color change between colorless and purple under different light irradiations. The typical textures from POM showed that their isomers both had nematic phase and smectic phase with different colors. These compounds with bent shape were more sensitive to light than those of diarylethenes reported.
