Com. available tech. grade non-ionic surfactants usually contain impurities and have a broad distribution of mol. weight owing to degree of ethoxylation. It has been shown that the surface tension method (Wilhelmy plate) is very sensitive if impurities are present in surfactant. Much lower CMC values are obtained for tech. grade surfactants with the surface tension method than with the dye solubilization method. The CMC determined by dye solubilization technique are in fair agreement with the values obtained by other available methods. The change in critical micellar concentration of Triton X-100 and Triton X-114 has been studied through the influence of additive Chloramine-T in aqueous medium by measuring the absorbance of the pure surfactant and with Chloramine-T in presence of water insoluble dye Orange-OT by using dye solubilization technique. The absorbance was found to increase with increased concentration of pure surfactant Triton X-100 and Triton X-114. The absorbance of the mixed systems with Chloramine-T also shows the same trend. The CMC of pure surfactant get decreased with increased concentration of additive Chloramine-T. The influence of additive Chloramine-T on the absorbance of Triton X-100 and Triton X-114 is clear indication that the phenomenon of dye micellization is associated with the different micelles coalescing.

A C2-sym. 7,8-dioxa[6]helicene-2,13-diol was synthesized from readily available 2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene on a gram scale. A high-yielding synthetic strategy for the regioselective hydroxymethylation at the sterically most hindered C1 position of diol analogs I (R = tosyl, (+)-(1S)-10-Camphorsulfonyl, (-)-(1S)-Camphanoyl) was investigated. The dioxa[6]helicene backbone with configurationally stable helical enantiomers II was synthesized, and these enantiomers were separated by HPLC on a chiral stationary phase. An unexpected domino Prins reaction was also observed This is the first report of a domino Prins reaction occurring on a helicene. Along with the high-yielding regioselective functionalization of dioxa[6]helicene analogs, the synthesis of a few cis-7a,14c-dihydro-functionalized helicenoid diols, e.g., III, substituted at the sterically most hindered C1 and C14 positions in their racemic forms was explored.

Kim, Seon Hwa published the artcileDegradation of prochloraz by rice bakanae disease pathogen Fusarium fujikuroi with differing sensitivity: a possible explanation for resistance mechanism, Safety of N-(2-(2,4,6-Trichlorophenoxy)ethyl)propan-1-amine, the publication is Journal of the Korean Society for Applied Biological Chemistry (2010), 53(4), 433-439, database is CAplus.

The fungicide prochloraz was subjected to degradation by the pathogen causing rice Bakanae disease, Fusarium fujikuroi, in order to gain an insight into the mechanisms of sensitivity and resistance to the fungicide. Growth-inhibiting assays of pathogens were conducted on potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates by a paper-disk agar-diffusion method. Significant growth inhibition of the sensitive strain CF106 was observed at the recommended treatment level of prochloraz, whereas negligible growth inhibition of the resistant strain CF245 was observed at the same treatment level. The strain CF245 was shown to be able to grow on PDA with 500 mg/L of the fungicide, which is significantly higher than its recommended treatment level. Growth-inhibiting assays of pathogens were also conducted in potato dextrose broth (PDB) medium supplemented with prochloraz at different concentrations, measuring their biomass weights over the incubation period. Significant growth inhibition was observed in the strain CF106 at a level of 0.5 mg/L, but negligible growth inhibition was observed in the strain CF245 at the same treatment level with the strain CF106. The strain CF245 could grow in PDB supplemented with 1.0 mg/L of prochloraz. The degradation of prochloraz by the 2 strains was evaluated by gas liquid chromatog. and mass spectrometry analyses. The strain CF245 completely degraded 1.0 mg/L prochloraz in 5 days after incubation, whereas no degradation of prochloraz was observed by the strain CF106 at the same treatment level. Liquid chromatog. Q-TOF MS detected N-(2-(2,4,6-trichlorophenoxy)ethyl)propan-1-amine as a major degradation product of prochloraz by the strain CF245. These results indicated that the degradation of prochloraz may account for the reduced sensitivity of the strain CF245 to prochloraz.

In the present study, the effect of disinfectant addition into drinking water on quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) growth performance, egg quality, and water quality parameters was investigated. Drinking water quality was pos. affected by addition of disinfectant (sodium N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide trihydrate). Microbial load of drinking water was reduced by disinfectant addition Feed intake of the quails provided with disinfected drinking water was lower, while water intake and live weight gain was similar between the trial groups. Quail egg quality was affected by addition of disinfectant. The eggs of the quails provided disinfected drinking water had lower egg weight, shell strength and thickness, but the protein and mineral composition was not affected by disinfectant addition The Haugh units of the eggs of the quails provided with disinfected water were higher, thus these types of eggs could be readily more suitable for the bakery industry. It can be concluded that addition of disinfectant into quail drinking water may improve the status and egg quality of quails.

The association constants, (Ka), entropy, and enthalpy (ΔH) for the H-bonding of PhSH with 6 phosphoryl compounds, e.g., (EtO)2P(O)CCl3, were determined using the Hiquchi plot. ΔH and log Ka were both linearly dependent on the change in NMR chem. shift, Δδx, and with ir frequency shift δυSH, and δΔx and σν were linearly related. On going from CCl4 to cyclohexane solvent Ka and -δH were greatly increased whereas δx and δΔx were considerably decreased. A relation between the energy changes between S-H and C-H and S-H and O-H proton donors was established.

Authors developed an efficient chem. resolution of racemic hydroxy substituted dithia-aza[4]helicenes (DTA[4]H) 1(OH) using enantiopure acids as resolving agents. The better diastereomeric separation was achieved on esters prepared with (1S)-(-)-camphanic acid. Subsequent simple manipulations produced highly optically pure (≥ 99% enantiomeric excess) (P) and (M)-1(OH) in good yields. The role of the position where the chiral auxiliary is inserted (cape- vs. bay-zone) and the structure of the enantiopure acid used on successful resolution are discussed.
