Evaporated potassium chloride for double-sided interfacial passivation in inverted planar perovskite solar cells

Defect-induced charge carrier recombination at the interfaces between perovskite and adjacent charge transport layers restricts further improvements in the device performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Defect passivation at these interfaces can reduce trap states and inhibit the induced nonradiative recombination. Herein, we report a double-sided interfacial passivation via simply evaporating potassium chloride (DIP-KCl) at both the hole transport layer (HTL)/perovskite and perovskite/electron transport layer (ETL) interfaces in inverted planar PSCs. We demonstrate that the bottom KCl layer at the HTL/perovskite interface not only reduces the interfacial defects and improves the interfacial contact, but also leads to increased perovskite crystallinity, while the top KCl layer at the perovskite/ETL interface efficiently passivates the perovskite top surface defects and facilitates electron extraction at this interface. Thus, suppressed nonradiative recombination and faster charge extraction at both interfaces close to the perovskite layer can be achieved by using our DIP-KCl strategy. As a result, inverted PSCs based on DIP-KCl present an increased efficiency from 17.1% to 19.2% and enhanced stability, retaining over 90% of their initial efficiency after aging at maximum power point tracking for 1000 h. This work provides a simple and efficient way for defect passivation to further increase the efficiency and stability of PSCs. Interoceptive insular cortex participates in sensory processing of gastrointestinal malaise and associated behaviors

The insular cortex plays a central role in the perception and regulation of bodily needs and emotions. Its modular arrangement, corresponding with different sensory modalities, denotes a complex organization, and reveals it to be a hub that is able to coordinate autonomic and behavioral responses to many types of stimuli. Yet, little is known about the dynamics of its electrical activity at the neuronal level. We recorded single neurons in behaving rats from the posterior insula cortex (pIC), a subdivision considered as a primary interoceptive cortex, during gastrointestinal (GI) malaise, a state akin to the emotion of disgust in humans. We found that a large proportion of pIC neurons were modulated during the rodent compensatory behaviors of lying on belly (LOB) and Pica. Furthermore, we demonstrated that LOB was correlated with low-frequency oscillations in the field potentials and spikes at the theta (8 Hz) band, and that low-frequency electrical microstimulation of pIC elicited LOB and Pica. These findings demonstrate that pIC neurons play a critical role in GI malaise perception, and that the pIC influences the expression of behaviors that alleviate GI malaise. Our model provides an accessible approach at the single cell level to study innate emotional behaviors, currently elusive in humans.

Effect of pulsed vacuum and laser microperforations on the potential acceleration of chicken meat marination

Chicken meat marination has become a fundamental process in the poultry industry since it provides a product with better sensory attributes. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of CO2 laser microperforation coupled with vacuum impregnation treatment on the marination processing time of chicken breasts and to mathematically analyze the marinade diffusion process using Fick’s second law and an anomalous diffusion model. Cylindrical cuts of unmarinated chicken meat were CO2-laser microperforated with pores of 228 mu m and marinated under vacuum pressure (15 kPa) with NaCl (3% wt/wt) and sodium tripolyphosphate (1% wt/wt) during 60 hr at 6 degrees C. The chicken:brine ratio was 1:11 wt/wt. Mass gain, moisture content, and salt concentration were determined over time; furthermore, effective diffusion coefficient (D-eff) was obtained using Fick’s second law and anomalous diffusion models. Marinade diffusion into chicken cuts was favored by microperforation combined with vacuum pulses, reduction processing time in 34%. The D-eff ranged between 1.46 x 10(-10) and 2.08 x 10(-10)m(2)/s for Fick’s second law and between 2.27 x 10(-10) and 4.23 x 10(-10)m(2)/s(alpha) for anomalous diffusion model, with alpha-values close to 1. In conclusion, the results showed no significant difference between the models, which was attributed to the homogeneity of the chicken tissue. Practical Applications Chicken meat marination has become a fundamental process in the poultry industry since it provides a product with better sensory attributes and shelf life than unmarinated chicken meat. Nevertheless, marination is a process that requires a long processing time to obtain a specified salt content in the meat. In this sense, laser microperforation of the meat is a treatment that when coupled with vacuum impregnation, can accelerate the marinating process of poultry meat. When simultaneously applying both technologies, the processing time was reduced by 6 hr compared with the control (almost 34%), which will allow a significant increase in plant productivity.

Action of chloride ions as a habit modifier in the hydrothermal crystal growth of rutile TiO2 nanorod from SnO2 seed crystal

The mechanism of hydrothermal heteroepitaxial growth of rutile TiO2 nanorods from SnO2 seed nanocrystals under acidic conditions was studied. On the basis of the experimental and density functional theory (DFT) simulation results, we have presented a reaction mechanism that chloride ions are preferentially adsorbed on the oxygen-defect sites on the (110) plane of TiO2 to suppress the growth, and consequently, TiO2 grows in the [001] direction to yield the nanorod with the (1 1 0)-faceted side walls. Importantly, the DFT simulations indicated that easy defect formation on the (110) facet is a key to the preferential adsorption of chloride ions.

Succinyl chitosan gold nanocomposite: Preparation, characterization, in vitro and in vivo anticandidal activity

Herein, we have successfully synthesized a novel N-Succinyl chitosan/gold nanocomposite (N-SuC/Au NC) using N-SuC and gold(III) chloride, and investigated the biocompatibility and antifungal activity. The synthesized N-SuC/Au NC was characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscope, and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy. The N-SuC/Au NC exhibited a strong inhibition effect towards pathogenic Candida albicans. Morphological analysis revealed the destruction of C. albicans cell membrane due to N-SuC/Au NC treatment. The in vitro and in vivo toxicity of N-SuC/Au NC was analyzed with HEK293T mammalian cells and zebrafish larvae, respectively. The synthesized N-SuC/Au NC demonstrated no cytotoxicity towards HEK293T cells up to 1200 mu g/mL concentration. The survival rate of the zebrafish larvae at 120 hpf, was found as 100% up to 1200 mu g/mL of N-SuC/Au NC exposure. The in vivo studies further confirmed the inhibitory effects of N-SuC/Au NC on the formation of C. albicans hyphae in infected zebrafish muscle tissue. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Uranium(VI) toxicity in tobacco BY-2 cell suspension culture – A physiological study

For the first time, the physiological and cellular responses of Nicotiana tabacum (BY-2) cells to uranium (U) as an abiotic stressor were studied using a multi-analytic approach that combined biochemical analysis, thermodynamic modeling and spectroscopic studies. The goal of this investigation was to determine the U threshold toxicity in tobacco BY-2 cells, the influence of U on the homeostasis of micro-macro essential nutrients, as well as the effect of Fe starvation on U bioassociation in cultured BY-2 cells. Our findings demonstrated that U interferes with the homeostasis of essential elements. The interaction of U with BY-2 cells confirmed both timeand concentration-dependent kinetics. Under Fe deficiency, a reduced level of U was detected in the cells compared to Fe-sufficient conditions. Interestingly, blocking the Ca channels with gadolinium chloride caused a decrease in U concentration in the BY-2 cells. Spectroscopic studies evidenced changes in the U speciation in the culture media with increasing exposure time under both Fe-sufficient and deficient conditions, leading us to conclude that different stress response reactions are related to Fe metabolism. Moreover, it is suggested that U toxicity in BY-2 cells is highly dependent on the existence of other micro-macro elements as shown by negative synergistic effects of U and Fe on cell viability.

Machine learning prediction of cellulose-rich materials from biomass pretreatment with ionic liquid solvents

Ionic liquid solvents (ILSs) have been effectively utilized in biomass pretreatment to produce cellulose-rich materials (CRMs). Predicting CRM properties and evaluating multi-dimensional relationships in this system are necessary but complicated. In this work, machine learning algorithms were applied to predict CRM properties in terms of cellulose enrichment factor (CEF) and solid recovery (SR), using 23-feature datasets from biomass characteristics, operating conditions, ILSs identities, and catalyst. Random forest algorithm was found to have the highest prediction accuracy with RMSE and R-2 of 0.22 and 0.94 for CEF, as well as 0.07 and 0.84 for SR, respectively. Highly influential features on making predictions were mainly from biomass characteristics and ILS treatment ‘s operating conditions, totally contributed 80% on CEF and 60% on SR. Oneand two-way partial dependence plots were used to explain/interpret the multi-dimensional relationships of the most important features. Our findings could be applied in designing new ILSs and optimizing the process conditions.

Enhanced optical cross-section of radiation induced defect centers under plasmon resonance conditions: Shifting stimulation wavelength of optically stimulated luminescence dosimeters

Plasmon-enhanced luminescence is an important tool for development of advanced sensing technologies but the mechanisms originating these enhancements are still in debate. In this work, we investigate plasmon-enhanced luminescence mechanisms using the Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) from defect centers in X-ray irradiated sodium chloride nanocrystals deposited on silver nanoparticle (AgNP) films with varying plasmon properties upon blue, green, and red OSL stimulation. Although the absolute OSL intensity for NaCl crystals is higher upon blue stimulation, under plasmon resonance conditions, higher absolute OSL intensity occurs upon green stimulation and the largest OSL enhancements are observed by employing red stimulation. These results suggest that, as long as the OSL stimulation wavelength is well tuned with the film plasmon band, plasmonic coupling does not depend on the trap depth and that the largest luminescence enhancements are achieved in spectral regions where the optical cross-sections of the defect centers are smaller. In terms of radiation dosimetry applications, this result allows to shift the stimulation wavelength farther from the OSL emission window, improving the signal to noise ratio and the dose assessment sensitivity and accuracy.

Enhancement of the thermal analysis of power cables installed in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) ducts under continuous and cyclic current loading conditions

A study of the performance of power cables installed inside non-metallic ducts is presented here. Cable capacity calculations for this type of installation are done. The thermal analysis of cables inside ducts which are installed in air as riser or buried in soils is presented. According to IEC 60287 cables can be installed in fibre ducts in concrete layer surrounded by the soil, in this article it is proposed to install the cables in PVC ducts directly buried in the soil. Based on IEC 60287-1-3 and IEC 60853-2 standards proposed models in steady state and dynamic cable loadings are constructed. The proposed equivalent thermal models are used in the calculations of the cable components temperature for cables installed in ducts. It is concluded that very high increase in cable conductor temperature is observed when the cable is installed in duct and used as riser or even when it is installed in duct buried in soil. Significant decrease in the temperature of the cable conductor can be noticed when the cable is directly buried in the soil compared with that installed in ducts.

Potassium fertilization for white oat and maize in integrated crop-livestock system under no-tillage

Integrated crop-livestock systems (ICLS) are diversified agroecosystems characterized by the rotation, succession or mixtures of agricultural, livestock or forestry activities, in no-tillage systems. In ICLS with trees, the tree modifies the light and water availability, and might generate root competition for nutrients, like potassium (K). The study aims to evaluate dry matter (DM) and macronutrients accumulation in white oat, DM and grain yield of maize, and the K use efficiency (KUE) by these crops cultivated in an ICLS with eucalyptus. The experimental design was a randomized block in a split-plot design with three replications. Plots consisted of four cultivation positions (CP) between the tree rows, where CP1 (0 to 4 m distance) refers to a position close to the trees; CP2 (4 to 8 m distance) and CP4 (12 to 16 m distance) corresponds to two intermediate positions between rows; and CP3 (8 to 12 m distance) corresponds to a central position between rows. In subplots, four potassium oxide (K2O) annual doses were assigned, with potassium chloride being applied on the surface, where each rate was half the rate applied at sowing of each crop. DM and macronutrients accumulation in white oat shoot decreased due to eucalyptus shadow (64.5% light restriction). Responses of maize DM and grain yield to K2O addition were different among CPs, possibly owing to different light patterns. No changes in the maize yield were observed with K2O application in CP1 and CP2. However, for other positions, quadratic responses in grain yield were observed. In ICLS with eucalyptus in a subtropical region of Brazil, the reduction of K fertilization led to lower yields in white oat and maize. As KUE was high in plots with low K rate, the production cost in ICLS with trees may be decreased if massive production is not required.
