Electrochemical reduction-oxidation processes with the aid of cathode catalysts are promising technologies for the decomposition of organic compounds. High-efficiency and low-cost catalysts for electrochemical reductive dechlorination and two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are vital to the overall degradation of chlorinated organic compounds. This study reports electrochemical dechlorination using a single-atom Co-loaded sulfide graphene (Co-SG) catalyst via atomic hydrogen generated from the electrochemical reduction of H2O and electrolysis of hydrogen. The Co-SG electrocatalyst exhibited a remarkable performance for H2O2 synthesis with a half-wave potential of 0.70 V (vs RHE) and selectivity over 90%. The high electrochemical performance was achieved for bifunctional electrocatalysis with regard to the smaller overpotentials, faster kinetics, and higher cycling stability compared to the noble metal-based electrocatalysts. In this study, 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid was well degraded and the TOC concentration was effectively reduced. This work introduces the preparation of a new active site for high-performance single-atom catalysts and also promotes its application in the electrochemical degradation of chlorinated organic pollutants.

Malaria remains one of the deadliest diseases in the world today. Novel chemoprophylactic and chemotherapeutic antimalarials are needed to support the renewed eradication agenda. We have discovered a novel antimalarial acridone chemotype with dual-stage activity against both liver stage and blood-stage malaria. Several lead compounds generated from structural optimization of a large library of novel acridones exhibit efficacy in the following systems: (1) picomolar inhibition of in vitro Plasmodium falciparum blood-stage growth against multidrug-resistant parasites; (2) curative efficacy after oral administration in an erythrocytic Plasmodium yoelii murine malaria model; (3) prevention of in vitro Plasmodium berghei sporozoite-induced development in human hepatocytes; and (4) protection of in vivo P. berghei sporozoite-induced infection in mice. This study offers the first account of liver-stage antimalarial activity in an acridone chemotype. Details of the design, chemistry, structure-activity relationships, safety, metabolic/pharmacokinetic studies, and mechanistic investigation are presented herein.

In this study, the transformation characteristics of fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) were investigated to characterize the removal of dissolved organic matter (DOM) during biological treatment of commingled chemical industrial wastewater. The results of fluorescence excitation and emission spectroscopy and parallel factor analysis revealed three components (C1, C2, and C3) of FDOM, which were related not only to surface and sewage sources but also chemical industrial wastewater sources. Resin fractionation results showed that the removal of DOM was affected not only by substrate biodegradability but also by DOM generation, such as intermediates, end products, and soluble microbial products, during biological treatment. However, the same variation tendency between DOM and FDOM, based on molecular weight (MW) distribution, was observed during MW fractionation. The changes in DOM in MW>10 kDa fraction apparently corresponded with C2 variation; the tendency of DOM removal in MW of 0.5-10 kDa fraction was possibly related to the evolutions of all three components; and lastly, the removal of DOM in MW<0.5 kDa fraction was found in accordance with C1 and C3 transformations. In continuance with earlier reported work, an extension has been carried out by the same research group. Mulling over the ongoing condition of resistance to existing antimalarial agents, we had reported synthesis and antimalarial activity of certain pyrazole-1,3,4-oxadiazole hybrid compounds. Bearing previous results in mind, our research group ideated to design and synthesize some more derivatives with varied substitutions of acetophenone and hydrazide. Following this, derivatives 5a-r were synthesized and tested for antimalarial efficacy by schizont maturation inhibition assay. Further, depending on the literature support and results of our previous series, certain potent compounds (5f, 5n and 5r) were subjected to Falcipain-2 inhibitory assay. Results obtained for these particular compounds further strengthened our hypothesis. Here, in this series, compound 5f having unsubstituted acetophenone part and a furan moiety linked to oxadiazole ring emerged as the most potent compound and results were found to be comparable to that of the most potent compound (indole bearing) of previous series. Additionally, depending on the available literature, compounds (5a-r) were tested for their antileishmanial potential. Compounds 5a, 5c and 5r demonstrated dose-dependent killing of the promastigotes. Their IC50 values were found to be 33.3 +/- 1.68, 40.1 +/- 1.0 and 19.0 +/- 1.47 mu g/mL respectively. These compounds (5a, 5c and 5r) also had effects on amastigote infectivity with IC50 of 44.2 +/- 2.72, 66.8 +/- 2.05 and 73.1 +/- 1.69 mu g/mL respectively. Further target validation was done using molecular docking studies. Acute oral toxicity studies for most active compounds were also performed.

Introduction Socioeconomic disparities have been established for conventional cigarette use, but not for electronic cigarettes. This study estimates socioeconomic gradients in exclusive use of conventional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, and dual use (ie, use of both products) among adults in the United States. Methods Analyses consider nationally representative data on 25- to 54-year-old respondents to the 2014-2016 National Health Interview Surveys (N = 50306). Demographically adjusted seemingly unrelated regression models estimate how two socioeconomic status measures-respondent education and household income-relate to current exclusive use of conventional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, and dual use. Results Conventional cigarette use exhibits negative education and income gradients, consistent with existing research: -12.9 percentage points (confidence interval [CI]: -14.0, -11.8) if college educated, and -9.5 percentage points (CI: -10.9, -8.1) if household income exceeds 400% of the federal poverty level. These gradients are flatter for dual use (-1.4 [CI: -1.8, -0.9] and -1.9 [CI: -2.5, -1.2]), and statistically insignificant for electronic cigarette use (-0.03 [CI: -0.5, 0.4] and -0.3 [CI: -0.8, -0.2]). Limiting the sample to ever-smokers, higher education is associated with a 0.9 percentage point increase in likelihood of exclusive electronic cigarette use at interview (CI: 0.0, 1.9). Conclusions Education and income gradients in exclusive electronic cigarette use are small and statistically insignificant, contrasting with strong negative gradients in exclusive conventional cigarette use. Furthermore, more educated smokers are more likely to switch to exclusive e-cigarette use than less educated smokers. Such differential switching may exacerbate socioeconomic disparities in smoking-related morbidity and mortality, but lower the burden of tobacco-related disease. Implications Research has not yet established whether socioeconomic disparities in electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use resemble those observed for conventional cigarettes. This article uses nationally representative data on US adults aged 25-54 to estimate income and education gradients in exclusive use of conventional cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and dual use. Both gradients are steep and negative for conventional cigarette use, but flat and statistically insignificant for e-cigarette use. Repeating the analysis among ever-smokers indicates that more educated smokers are more likely to transition toward exclusive e-cigarette use than less educated smokers. Such differential substitution may exacerbate disparities in smoking-related morbidity and mortality.

The emergence and widespread occurrence of plant bacterial diseases that cause global production constraints have become major challenges to agriculture worldwide. To promote the discovery and development of new bactericides, imidazole-labeled 1,3,4-oxadiazole thioethers were first fabricated by integrating the crucially bioactive scaffolds of the imidazole motif and 1,3,4-oxadiazole skeleton in a single molecular architecture. Subsequently, a superior antibacterial compound A(6) was gradually discovered possessing excellent competence against plant pathogens Xanthomonas oryzae pv oryzae and Xanthomonas axonopodis pv citri with EC50 values of 0.734 and 1.79 mu g/mL, respectively. These values were better than those of commercial agents bismerthiazol (92.6 mu g/mL) and thiodiazole copper (77.0 mu g/mL). Further modifying the imidazole moiety into the imidazolium scaffold led to the discovery of an array of potent antibacterial compounds providing the corresponding minimum EC50 values of 0.295 and 0.607 mu g/mL against the two strains. Moreover, a plausible action mechanism for attacking pathogens was proposed based on the concentration dependence of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and fluorescence microscopy images. Given the simple molecular structures, easy synthetic procedure, and highly efficient bioactivity, imidazole (or imidazolium)-labeled 1,3,4-oxadiazole thioethers can be further explored and developed as promising indicators for the development of commercial drugs.

Herein, we report novel catalytic methodologies for protodecarboxylations and decarboxylative deuterations of carboxylic acids utilizing a silver-containing hybrid material as a heterogeneous noble metal catalyst. After an initial batch method development, a chemically intensified continuous flow process was established in a simple packed-bed system which enabled gram-scale protodecarboxlyations without detectable structural degradation of the catalyst. The scope and applicability of the batch and flow processes were demonstrated through decarboxylations of a diverse set of aromatic carboxylic acids. Catalytic decarboxylative deuterations were achieved on the basis of the reaction conditions developed for the protodecarboxylations using D2O as a readily available deuterium source.

We utilized synthetic photochemistry to generate novel sp 3 -rich scaffolds and report the design, synthesis, and biological testing of a diverse series of amides based on the 1-(amino-methyl)-2-benzyl-2-azabicyclo[2.1.1]hexane scaffold. Preliminary antimalarial screening of the library provided promising compounds with activity in the 1-5 mu M range with an enhanced hit rate. Further evaluation (solubility, drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics (DMPK), and toxicity) of a selected compound (9) suggested that this series represents an excellent opportunity for further optimization with the framework offering multiple opportunities for the addition of uniquely vectorally positioned extra functionality.
