Anesthetic potential of the essential oils of Aloysia triphylla, Lippia sidoides and Mentha piperita for Colossoma macropomum

The aim of this study was to evaluate the anesthetic potential of the essential oils of Aloysia triphylla (EOAT), Lippia sidoides (EOLS) and Mentha piperita (EOMP) in relation to juvenile tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum), based the swimming behavior of these fish and possible histopathological damage to the gills. To induce anesthesia, juvenile tambaqui (130.55 +/- 22.4 g; 16.8 +/- 0.95 cm) were individually exposed to different concentrations of the essential oils (EOAT: 5, 10, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 150 mg L-1; EOLS: 2, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 mg L-1; EOMP: 5, 10, 20, 40, 60, 70 and 90 mg L-1), for exposure periods of between four minutes and six hours. The three essential oils evaluated presented anesthetic properties. The concentration intervals over which the fish reached all the stages of anesthesia (1, 2, 3a, 3b and 4) were between 40 and 150 mg L-1 for EOAT; 20 and 50 mg L-1 for EOLS; and 40 and 90 mg L-1 for EOMP. The times taken to reach the anesthesia stages were inversely proportional to the increases in the concentration of the essential oils. The histopathological damage to the gills of the tambaqui that resulted from using essential oil concentrations that were defined as anesthetic (150 mg L-1 EOAT, 30 mg L-1 EOLS and 90 mg L-1 EOMP) were also evaluated. The main damage recorded was hypertrophy and hyperplasia of the lamellar epithelium, lamellar fusion and proliferation of chloride cells. According to the histopathological alteration index (HAI), there were no irreversible damage (such as fibrosis and necrosis) to the gills of the tambaqui. However, while EOLS and EOMP caused mild damages in the gills, the EOAT generated more severe damages. Overall, for the tambaqui, the essential oils of A. triphylla, L. sidoides and M. piperita are efficient anesthetic in the doses of 150, 30 and 90 mg L-1, respectively.

The Totality of Evidence and Use of ABP 215, a Biosimilar to Bevacizumab

ABP 215 (MVASI (TM), Amgen, Thousand Oaks, CA; MVASI (TM), Amgen Europe B.V., Netherlands) is a biosimilar to bevacizumab (Avastin(R), Genentech, South San Francisco, CA) reference product (RP), a monoclonal antibody targeting vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A). Here we provide a brief overview of the totality of evidence that supported the approval of ABP 215, along with practical considerations to ensure safe and effective administration. ABP 215 has been shown to be highly similar to the RP, with similar mechanism of action, analytical (structural and functional) characteristics, binding, and potency. The similarity of PK parameters of ABP 215 and bevacizumab RP has been confirmed in healthy volunteers. In a comparative clinical trial, patients with stage IV or recurrent non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer receiving carboplatin and paclitaxel were randomized to ABP 215 or bevacizumab RP. No clinically meaningful differences were found between ABP 215 and RP. The objective response rate (ORR) was 39% for ABP 215 and 41.7% for bevacizumab RP. The risk ratio for the ORR was 0.93 [90% confidence interval (CI), 0.80-1.09], which fell within the prespecified margin for equivalence of 0.67-1.5, indicating similar clinical efficacy. Similar to bevacizumab RP, ABP 215 is supplied as a clear to slightly opalescent, colorless to pale yellow, sterile solution in a glass vial. It should be diluted in 0.9% sodium chloride in polyvinylchloride or polyolefin bags before administering as an intravenous infusion. The ABP 215 solution should be stored at 2-8 degrees C (36-46 degrees F) prior to use. Physicochemical stability studies showed that there were no meaningful changes in purity or potency and no loss of protein after storage at 2-8 degrees C for 35 days followed by storage at 30 degrees C for 48 h.

Effectiveness of a formulation containing peptides and vitamin C in treating signs of facial ageing: three clinical studies

Objective Vitamin C and peptides are widely used in cosmetic products but there is a paucity of clinical studies showing that the formulations are effective in treating signs of facial ageing. These 3 clinical studies evaluated the effectiveness of an anti-ageing formula containing natural vitamin C (10%), biopeptides (rice and lupin), hyaluronic acid, and Vichy volcanic mineralising water, in amber glass ampoules with no preservatives (Peptide-C ampoules). Methods Dansyl chloride fluorescence labelling compared cell turnover for Peptide-C ampoules vs untreated skin in 32 female subjects. Study 2, an open clinical study, evaluated the efficacy on wrinkles of Peptide-C ampoules by investigator clinical scoring based on Dynamical Atlas visual assessment (N = 40) and subject self-assessment questionnaires (N = 47). Study 3, an open clinical study, evaluated wrinkles by instrumental quantification with 3D fringe projection analysis (N = 40) and subject questionnaires (N = 51). Results The mean cell turnover was faster for skin treated with Peptide-C ampoules compared to untreated skin (17.1 days vs. 19.2 days; P < 0.0001). In study 2, after 28 days application of Peptide-C ampoules, clinical grading of crow's-feet wrinkles, forehead wrinkles and nasolabial folds decreased by 9%, 11% and 5%, respectively (all P < 0.05 vs baseline). Of 47 subjects, 77%, 64% and 79% indicated their skin seemed smoothed out, fine lines were less visible, and skin complexion was more radiant, respectively. In study 3, the number of wrinkles decreased by 11.5% after 29 days application of Peptide-C ampoules vs baseline (P < 0.05) and 65% of subjects responded the fine lines were less visible. Conclusion This formulation of a combination of anti-ageing ingredients in ampoules, allowing a minimalist formula, showed significant results on improving facial wrinkles and radiance. A Case of Outpatient Hysterectomy in the Setting of Gitelman Syndrome

Gitelman syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder involving a defect in the sodium-chloride cotransporter, which is expressed in the apical membrane of the distal convoluted tubule. Electrolyte abnormalities commonly occur in patients with Gitelman syndrome as a result, including hypokalaemia, hypomagnesemia, and metabolic alkalosis. As a result, the disorder may present with various clinical manifestations, including fatigue, weakness, muscle tetany, facial paresthesias, and a predisposition to the development of various ventricular arrhythmias. ks a result, the perioperative management of patients with this disorder presents unique challenges with regard to fluid and electrolyte management and the prevention and management of potential arrhythmias. In addition, the pharmacology of various anesthetics may present additional complexity with regard to perioperative management in this particular patient population. The following case presentation of a 42-year-old female with Gitelman syndrome undergoing elective outpatient hysterectomy for suspected endometriosis serves to illustrate the challenges that arise with regard to perioperative management in this particular patient population and demonstrates how they may be addressed.

How Pure and Hydrated Reline Deep Eutectic Solvents Affect the Conformation and Stability of Lysozyme: Insights from Atomistic Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Factors governing the stability and activity of proteins and enzymes in nonaqueous solvents have just been started to be explored. Because of their benign and economically viable nature, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are being seen as an alternative media in many biotransformation processes. The present study exploits the changes in the conformation and stability of hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) in the presence of reline (a eutectic mixture of choline chloride and urea) and reline/water mixtures using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. The lysozyme structure was found to be partially folded in both reline and reline/water mixtures. Root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) of the positions of Ca atoms of lysozyme indicate that 50/50 reline/water solvent induces more destabilization in the conformation of HEWL than that by pure reline and 75/25 reline/water mixture. From the root-mean-square fluctuation (RMSF) analysis, it is found that the lysozyme active site (Glu35-Asp52) is quite stable in the presence of pure reline but it is least stable in the presence of 50/50 reline/water mixture. Our results show that the secondary structure of the lysozyme is significantly affected in the presence of reline. Our further analysis reveals that the hydrogen bonding interaction between HEWL-[Ch](+) dominates over HEWL-urea and HEWL-Cl- in pure reline than in reline/water mixtures.

Electrochemical performance and enhanced nitrate removal of homogeneous polysulfone-based anion exchange membrane applied in membrane capacitive deionization cell

This paper aims to investigate different strategies toward the enhancement of nitrate removal in a membrane capacitive deionization cell using different membrane functionalizing agents such as trimethylamine, triethylamine, and N,N,N’,N’-tetramethyl-1,6-hexanediamine as well as a double-layer, novel homogeneous polysulfone-based anion exchange membrane. The prepared membranes exhibited nitrate versus chloride transport number ratio in the range of 0.96-1.52. The salt adsorption capacity for the NaNO3 feed was about 1.4-fold compared to that of using NaCl in case of triethylamine functionalized membrane under individual feeding solutions of 30 mL NaCl or NaNO3 during 30 min, and adsorption/desorption voltages of 1.6/0.0 V process conditions. At the same time, this parameter was about 1.2-fold weaker for the cell with a double-layer membrane. Based on the experiments, it can be inferred that the affinity toward nitrate could be promoted as the chain length of the alkyl group increases (i.e., increasing hydrophobicity of the groups). However, due to decrement in water uptake, the overall electrochemical performance of the membranes tended to weaken as the affinity toward nitrate increased. Results showed that the prepared membranes are suitable substitutions to conventional polystyrene-based ones utilized in membrane capacitive deionization cells.

Fundamental Study of Palladium Recycling Using Dry Aqua Regia Considering the Recovery from Spent Auto-catalyst

In this research, a recycling process for palladium using dry aqua regia, which consists of iron(III) chloride-potassium chloride, was proposed. Palladium was dissolved in dry aqua regia, and the dissolved palladium was recovered by leaching with potassium chloride solution with added ammonium chloride and nitric acid. Palladium was almost completely dissolved in 3 h at 600 K, and the recovery ratio of dissolved palladium was up to 80%. In addition, the dissolution of palladium in coexistence with platinum and the dissolution of platinum-palladium alloy by dry aqua regia were also tested. The dissolved palladium and platinum were separated and recovered by solid-liquid separation technique using the difference in solubility of their compounds in potassium chloride and sodium chloride solutions. As a result, pure compounds of each element were recovered. This result suggested the possibility of using dry aqua regia for the separation of platinum-group metals.Graphical Abstract

Synthesis of a novel lignin-based epoxy resin curing agent and study of cure kinetics, thermal, and mechanical properties

In this contribution, first of all, the methoxy groups of organic solvent lignin (OSL) was converted to phenolic hydroxyl groups through demethylation reaction for the purpose of fabricating demethylated organic solvent lignin (DOSL). In addition, the resulting DOSL was utilized as a renewable material to synthesize a novel esterified lignin (EDOSL) by reacting with isobutyryl chloride for curing of epoxy resin. Finally, commercial liquid diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A was cured by EDOSL in the presence of 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) used as a catalyst based on dual-curing mechanism. Dual curing is a processing methodology based upon the alliance of two diverse and compatible polymerization reactions occurring sequentially or simultaneously. According to the FTIR spectra and H-1-NMR analyses, the demethylation of OSL, esterification of DOSL, and the curing reaction of epoxy resin with EDOSL were successfully conducted. The value of the phenolic hydrogen in the DOSL was approximately 4.89 mmol/g, which increased by 12.64% after demethylation. The thermal and mechanical performances of these cured epoxy samples were measured by DSC, DMA, TGA, and tensile testing. The epoxy system cured by 10%wt esterified lignin with 1%wt DMAP possessed the tensile strength of 71.54 +/- 7.50 MPa and the initial degradation temperature (T-5%) of 370 degrees C, which can compete fairly with commercial aromatic curing agents or other lignin-based agents studied currently for the curing of epoxy systems.

Note that a catalyst decreases the activation energy for both the forward and the reverse reactions and hence accelerates both the forward and the reverse reactions. you can also check out more blogs about 19692-45-6. Product Details of 19692-45-6.

Removal of selected emerging micropollutants from wastewater treatment plant effluent by advanced non-oxidative treatment – A lab-scale case study from Serbia

The presence of 48 emerging micropollutants was tested in influent and effluent from primary and secondary treatment at a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Serbia. Sixteen emerging micropollutants (active pharmaceutical ingredients, bisphenols, parabens and UV filters) had concentrations >LOQ (max. conc. 33.4 mu g/L). The removal efficiency of primary treatment ranged from 2.0% – 96.0%. In the case of secondary treatment, except for ketoprofen (61.0%), diclofenac (62.6%) and carbamazepine (- 20.0%), all other measured micropollutants had removal efficiency above 77.0%. Advanced non-oxidative lab-scale treatments were investigated. Powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption achieved removal efficiencies in the range 52.4-99.9%, novel coagulation with natural coagulant isolated from beans achieved removal efficiencies in range 3.2-99.9%, conventional coagulation with ferric chloride 3.12-96.4%, combined adsorption/coagulation 2.69-99.9% and combined PAC/ultrafiltration (PAC/UF) 60-99.9%. For most of the micropollutants, their removal efficiencies were similar to that reported in the literature. Novel natural coagulant showed significant potential compared to the conventional coagulant during a short episode of sub-optimal WWTP operation. When natural coagulant was applied as a part of an adsorption/coagulation hybrid process, there was no negative effect on PAC adsorption, while for conventional coagulant that was not always the case. Also, a structure property relationship (SPR) study revealed correlations between the removal efficiency of the majority of treatments applied and total polar surface area (TPSA) of the micropollutants.
