Synthesis, temperature-dependent NMR structure investigation and utilization of a new, stable and easily accessible aryl-diadamantylphosphine ligand family is reported. The bulky and electron-rich phosphorus center of the ligand enhances the catalytic activity of palladium in cross-coupling reactions of sterically demanding ortho-substituted aryl halides. In our study, we demonstrated the synthetic applicability of the new phosphine ligands in Buchwald-Hartwig and tosyl hydrazone coupling reactions.

The upgrading of tar is a key issue for the sufficient application of biowaste pyrolysis technology. Molten salt, with high migration and diffusion of ions to prevent the deactivation of coke deposition of tar reforming functional metals, is considered as a feasible catalytic reaction medium and heat carrier for the upgrading of tar. The present study investigated the interactions between small molecular pyrolysis gases (including H-2, CO, CH4) and main tar model compound in ternary carbonate eutectics (Li2CO3-Na2CO3-K2CO3). The results demonstrated that H-2 could be decomposed to produce H radicals, promoting the conversion of toluene into gaseous products. CO32- could consume H radicals required by toluene cracking, making the process toluene polymerized to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons be strengthened. On the other hand, CO would react with OH radicals to produce H radicals and could enhance gas-generating process. In addition, toluene could react with CO to form benzaldehyde and phenylacetaldehyde. With the addition of CH4, more H radicals were supposed to be consumed, and toluene cracking process was further inhibited. Finally, the effect sequence of small molecular gases (H-2 > CH4 > CO) on toluene reforming reaction was authenticated by investigating the impacts of introducing any two gases in toluene reforming. Unnatural alpha-amino acids are invaluable building blocks in synthetic organic chemistry and could upgrade the function of peptides. We developed a new mode for catalytic activation of amino acid Schiff bases, serving as a platform for highly congested unnatural alpha-amino acid synthesis. The redox active copper catalyst enabled efficient cross-coupling to construct contiguous tetrasubstituted carbon centers. The broad functional group compatibility highlights the mildness of the present catalysis. Notably, we achieved successive beta-functionalization and oxidation of amino acid Schiff bases to afford dehydroalanine derivatives bearing tetrasubstituted carbon. A three-component cross-coupling reaction of an amino acid Schiff base, alkyl bromides, and styrene derivatives demonstrated the high utility of the present method. The diastereoselective reaction was also achieved using menthol derivatives as a chiral auxiliary, delivering enantiomerically enriched alpha-amino acid bearing alpha,beta-continuous tetrasubstituted carbon. The synthesized highly congested unnatural alpha-amino acid could be derivatized and incorporated into peptide synthesis.

A simple, efficient, and metal-free methodology for the preparation of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole and derivatives in excellent yields via microwave-assisted pathway is reported. Our condition provides a convenient protocol for the synthesis of a diverse collection of 2-mercaptobenzothiazoles and 6-(4-substituted-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)-2-mercaptobenzothiazoles with a very simple purification process. This report provides an alternative protocol for fast access to the wide range of compounds for sequence synthesis and biological studies.

We report a highly efficient ortho-selective electrophilic chlorination of phenols utilizing a Lewis basic selenoether catalyst. The selenoether catalyst resulted in comparable selectivities to our previously reported bis-thiourea ortho-selective catalyst, with a catalyst loading as low as 1%. The new catalytic system also allowed us to extend this chemistry to obtain excellent ortho-selectivities for unprotected anilines. The selectivities of this reaction are up to >20:1 ortho/para, while the innate selectivities for phenols and anilines are approximately 1:4 ortho/para. A series of preliminary studies revealed that the substrates require a hydrogen-bonding moiety for selectivity.

Graphitic carbon nitride materials have attracted significant interest in recent years and found applications in diverse light-to-energy conversions such as artificial photosynthesis, CO2 reduction, or degradation of organic pollutants. However, their utilization in synthetic photocatalysis, especially in the direct functionalization of C(sp(3))-H bonds, remains underexplored. Herein, we report mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-CN as a heterogeneous organic semiconductor photocatalyst for direct arylation of C(sp(3))-H bonds in combination with nickel catalysis. Our protocol has a broad synthetic scope (>70 examples including late-stage functionalization of drugs and agrochemicals), is operationally simple, and shows high chemo- and regioselectivities. Facile separation and recycling of the mpg-CN catalyst in combination with its low preparation cost, innate photochemical stability, and low toxicity are beneficial features overcoming typical shortcomings of homogeneous photocatalysis. Detailed mechanistic investigations and kinetic studies indicate that an unprecedented energy-transfer process (EnT) from the organic semiconductor to the nickel complex is operating.

Ylide-functionalized phosphine (YPhos) ligands allow the palladium-catalyzed alpha-arylation of alkyl ketones with aryl chlorides with record setting activity. Using a cyclohexyl-substituted YPhos ligand, a wide range of challenging ketone substrates was efficiently and selectively monoarylated under mild conditions. A newly designed YPhos ligand bearing tert-butyl groups on the coordinating phosphorus atom is already active at room temperature. The synthetic potential was demonstrated by gram-scale reactions and the succinct synthesis of epsilon-caprolactone derivatives.

Here we report a protocol to synthesize diversiform fluorinated isocryptolepine analogues with potential biological activities in one step via directed C-2 and C-3 dual C-H functionalization of indoles. We also attempted to take into account fluorinated imidoyl chlorides as a novel kind of synthons in the directed C-H functionalization reactions. As a result, a variety of fluorinated isocryptolepine analogues were obtained in up to 96% yield. Moreover, we conducted control experiments to disclose the reaction mechanism.
