Catalytic transformation of alcohols via metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions is very important, but it typically relies on a multistep procedure. We here report a dynamic kinetic cross-coupling approach for the direct functionalization of alcohols. The feasibility of this strategy is demonstrated by a nickel-catalyzed cross-electrophile arylation reaction of benzyl alcohols with (hetero)aryl electrophiles. The reaction proceeds with a broad substrate scope of both coupling partners. The electron-rich, electron-poor, and ortho-/meta-/para-substituted (hetero)aryl electrophiles (e.g., Ar-OTf, Ar-I, Ar-Br, and inert Ar-Cl) all coupled well. Most of the functionalities, including aldehyde, ketone, amide, ester, nitrile, sulfone, furan, thiophene, benzothiophene, pyridine, quinolone, Ar-SiMe3, Ar-Bpin, and Ar-SnBu3, were tolerated. The dynamic nature of this method enables the direct arylation of benzylic alcohol in the presence of various nucleophilic groups, including nonactivated primary/secondary/tertiary alcohols, phenols, and free indoles. It thus offers a robust alternative to existing methods for the precise construction of diarylmethanes. The synthetic utility of the method was demonstrated by a concise synthesis of biologically active molecules and by its application to peptide modification and conjugation. Preliminary mechanistic studies revealed that the reaction of in situ formed benzyl oxalates with nickel, possibly via a radical process, is an initial step in the reaction with aryl electrophiles.

The use of the nickel(ii) complex [(TEEDA)NiCl2] (1; TEEDA= N,N,N ‘,N ‘-tetraethyl-ethylendiamine) and nickel(0) complex [Ni(COD)(2)] (5) as pre-catalysts in the additive-free catalytic hydrogenation of benzonitrile (BN) is reported. In the presence of 1 (1 mol%), BN was hydrogenated under relatively mild reaction conditions (100 degrees C, 120 psi H-2, 72 h) to the corresponding secondary imine, N-benzylidenebenzylamine (BBA), in very good yield (83%). As a counterpart, 5 (1 mol%) selectively hydrogenated BN to benzylamine (BA) in excellent yield (96%) under similar reaction conditions (80 degrees C, 120 psi H-2, 24 h). In both cases, nickel nanoparticles (Ni-NPs) were identified as the catalytically active species. These Ni-NPs were formed in situ from 1 and 5 without external additives or additional stabilizers. The use of complex 5 was extended to the hydrogenation of different (hetero) aromatic and aliphatic nitriles.

The heterocyclic compound 2-amino-N-(2-chloro-6-methylphenyl)thiazole-5-carboxamide (1), designed using 2-chloro-6-methylaniline (2) as the start material, was successfully obtained via multiple synthesis route and finally characterized by IR, H-1 NMR, and single-cystal X-ray crystallography. A strategy involving bimetallic catalysis with a combination of Cp*Co(CO)I-2 and Cu(OAc)(2) was used for performing Buchwald-type C-N coupling reactions of aryl chlorides with amines. The reactions proceeded at 100 degrees C to produce excellent yields of many of the desired C-N coupled products, in 4 h, under aerobic reaction conditions. The reactions were shown to run under base-free and solvent-free conditions, enabling this strategy to work efficiently for electron-withdrawing and base-sensitive functionalities. The presented methodology was found to be equally efficient for electron-donating functionalities as well as for primary (1 degrees) and secondary (2 degrees) aromatic and aliphatic amines. Moreover, the products were easily separated through the extractions of the organic aqueous layer, with this process chromatographic separations is not required.

Alternatives to the use of pressurized hydrogen (H-2) in chemical syntheses are of growing interest and importance in developing safer protocols. Ammonia borane (AB), with its high hydrogen content and ability to release H-2 under mild conditions, is one potential solution. However, optimization of AB dehydrogenation and further the use of AB as a H-2 source to facilitate tandem one-pot reactions with both high activity and stability is an ongoing research challenge. In this work, monodisperse AuPd nanoparticle (NP) catalysts were synthesized and systematically studied for AB dehydrogenation, and Au-rich NPs were found to be the most active composition for AB methanolysis with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 160 min(-1) surpassing most Pd-based NP catalysts to date. More importantly, Au-rich NPs were also active in the one-pot tandem reduction of a series of nitro-groups and the hydrodehalogenation of mono- and polyhalogenated persistent chemical pollutants under mild reaction conditions using only a 2:1 molar ratio of AB to substrate. The AuPd catalyst was stable after ten reaction runs for AB methanolysis and five reaction runs for tandem one-pot reactions without a loss of activity or change in NP structure and morphology.

Visible light-induced organic reactions are important chemical transformations in organic chemistry, and their efficiency highly depends on suitable photocatalysts. However, the commonly used photocatalysts are precious transition-metal complexes and elaborate organic dyes, which hamper large-scale production due to high cost. Here, for the first time, we report a novel strategy: light and oxygen-enabled sodium trifluoromethanesulfinate-mediated selective oxidation of C-H bonds, allowing high-value-added aromatic ketones and carboxylic acids to be easily prepared in high-to-excellent yields using readily available alkyl arenes, methyl arenes and aldehydes as materials. The mechanistic investigations showed that the treatment of inexpensive and readily available sodium trifluoromethanesulfinate with oxygen under irradiation of light couldin situform a pentacoordinate sulfide intermediate as an efficient photosensitizer. The method represents a highly efficient, economical and environmentally friendly strategy, and the light and oxygen-enabled sodium trifluoromethanesulfinate photocatalytic system represents a breakthrough in photochemistry.

A novel, sustainable, environmentally friendly, high substrate scope, efficient, solvent-free and metal catalyst-free method for the cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) reaction between N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) and benzyl/ether compounds is described. This coupling reaction proceeds through ultrasound acceleration.
