A series of palladium N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), complexes C1-C5, bearing dianisole backbones and substituted N-aryl moieties have been synthesized and characterized. The electronic effect as well as the steric environment of the NHC ligands has been assessed. The synthesized palladium complexes were applied for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions under aerobic conditions. The relationship between the catalytic structure and catalytic performance was then extensively investigated. Upon optimizing the reaction conditions, the C4 was found to be highly efficient to catalyze the cross-coupling of (hetero)aryl chlorides with (hetero)arylboronic acids at a 0.1 mol % palladium loading.

The development of more reactive, general, easily accessible, and readily avail-able Pd(II)-NHC precatalysts remains a key challenge in homogeneous catalysis. In this study, we establish air-stable NHC-Pd(II) chloro-dimers, [Pd(NHC)(mu-Cl) Cl](2), as the most reactive Pd(II)-NHC catalysts developed to date. Most crucially, compared with [Pd(NHC)(allyl)Cl] complexes, replacement of the allyl throw-away ligand with chloride allows for a more facile activation step, while effec-tively preventing the formation of off-cycle [Pd-2(mu-allyl)(mu-Cl)(NHC)(2)] products. The utility is demonstrated via broad compatibility with amide cross-coupling, Suzuki cross-coupling, and the direct, late-stage functionalization of pharmaceu-ticals. Computational studies provide key insight into the NHC-Pd(II) chloro-dimer activation pathway. A facile synthesis of NHC-Pd(II) chloro-dimers in one-pot from NHC salts is reported. Considering the tremendous utility of Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions and the overwhelming success of [Pd(NHC)(allyl)Cl] precatalysts, we believe that NHC-Pd(II) chloro-dimers, [Pd(NHC)(mu-Cl)Cl](2), should be considered as go-to precatalysts of choice in cross-coupling processes.

A novel and efficient approach has been developed for the synthesis of a diverse range of hydroxyisoindolo[1,2-b]benzothiadiazinedioxide derivatives through a sequential palladium catalyzed cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) and intramolecular cyclization. This method works not only with aryl aldehydes and alcohols but also with toluene to generate angularly fused heterocycles in good to excellent yields.

BackgroundA number of region-specific validated triage systems exist; however very little is known about their performance in resource limited settings. We compare the local triage tool and internationally validated tools among under-fives presenting to an urban emergency department in Tanzania.MethodologyProspective descriptive study of consecutive under-fives seen at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), ED between November 2017 to April 2018. Patients were triaged according to Local Triage System (LTS), and the information collected were used to assign acuities in the other triage scales: Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS), Australasian Triage Scale (ATS), Manchester Triage Scale (MTS) and South African Triage Scale (SATS). Patients were then followed up to determine disposition and 24h outcome. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values for admission and mortality were then calculated.ResultsA total of 384 paediatric patients were enrolled, their median age was 17months (IQR 7-36months). Using LTS, 67(17.4%) patients were triaged in level one, 291(75.8%) level 2 and 26 (6.8%) in level 3 categories. Overall admission rate was 59.6% and at 24h there were five deaths (1.3%). Using Level 1 in LTS, and Levels 1 and 2 in other systems, sensitivity and specificity for admission for all triage scales ranged between 27.1-28.4% and 95.4-98% respectively, (PPV 90.3-95.3%, NPV 47.1-47.4%). Sensitivity for mortality was 80% for LTS, and 100% for the other scales, while specificity was low, yielding a PPV for all scales between 6.9 and 8%.ConclusionAll triage scales showed poor ability to predict need for admission, however all triage scales except LTS predicted mortality. The test characteristics for the other scales were similar. Future studies should focus on determining the reliability and validity of each of these triage tools in our setting.

Here we report a protocol to synthesize diversiform fluorinated isocryptolepine analogues with potential biological activities in one step via directed C-2 and C-3 dual C-H functionalization of indoles. We also attempted to take into account fluorinated imidoyl chlorides as a novel kind of synthons in the directed C-H functionalization reactions. As a result, a variety of fluorinated isocryptolepine analogues were obtained in up to 96% yield. Moreover, we conducted control experiments to disclose the reaction mechanism.

The recent pandemic (COVID-19) has seen a sweeping and surging use of products intended to clean and disinfect, such as air sprays, hand sanitizers, and surface cleaners, many of which contain fragrance. However, exposure to fragranced cleaning products has been associated with adverse effects on human health. Products can emit a range of volatile chemicals, including some classified as hazardous, but relatively few ingredients are disclosed to the public. Thus, relatively little is known about the specific emissions from these products. This study investigates the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from pandemic products that are being used frequently and extensively in society. In addition, among these emissions, this study identifies potentially hazardous compounds, compares so-called green and regular versions of products, and examines whether ingredients are disclosed to the public. Using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, 26 commonly used pandemic products, including 13 regular and 13 so-called green versions, were analyzed for their volatile emissions. Product types included hand sanitizers, air disinfectants, multipurpose cleaners, and handwashing soap. All products were fragranced. The analyses found the products collectively emitted 399 VOCs with 127 VOCs classified as potentially hazardous. All products emitted potentially hazardous compounds. Comparing regular products and green products, no significant difference was found in the emissions of the most prevalent compounds. Further, among the 399 compounds emitted, only 4% of all VOCs and 11% of potentially hazardous VOCs were disclosed on any product label or safety data sheet. This study reveals that pandemic products can generate volatile emissions that could pose risks to health, that could be unrecognized, and that could be reduced, such as by using fragrance-free versions of products.

An efficient synthesis of 3-functionalized coumarins is demonstrated fromo-cresols and active methylene compounds under solvent-, metal- and catalyst-free conditions in the presence of 70 % aqueoustert-butyl hydrogen peroxide. New Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell superparamagnetic nanoparticles functionalized by a bis-salophen Schiff base Pd complex were synthesized and employed as an efficient magnetic nanocatalyst in the Heck and Sonogashira cross coupling reactions. The synthesized nanostructures were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), elemental analysis (CHN), cyclic voltammetry (CV), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis (BET), and UV-vis spectroscopy. The morphology and size of the nanoparticles were investigated by FE-SEM and TEM analyses. Furthermore, the magnetic properties of the catalyst were investigated by VSM analysis. The loading content and leaching amounts of palladium on the catalyst were measured by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis. Also, the thermal behavior of this magnetic heterogeneous catalyst was studied using a TGA instrument. This heterogeneous catalytic system showed a good performance in the coupling of aryl halides with alkynes (Sonogashira reaction) as well as aryl halides with alkene derivatives (Heck reaction). High to excellent yields were achieved for these C-C coupling reactions. The catalyst can be simply separated from the reaction media by an external magnet and reused for eight consecutive runs without any significant loss of activity. Finally, the kinetics of the reactions were studied in this work.

Disclosed herein is a photochemical Heck-type arylation of vinylphenols with non-activated aryl and heteroaryl halides under visible light irradiation. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggested that the colored vinylphenolate anions acted as a strong reducing photoactivator to directly activate (hetero)aryl halides without the need for any sacrificial reductants. The photochemically generated aryl radicals coupled with another molecule of vinylphenol to afford the Heck-type arylation product in a regiospecific and stereoselective manner. The developed photochemical arylation protocol showed exceptional functional group tolerance and was successfully applied in the challenging late-stage modification of natural products without any protection-deprotection procedures.
