N-Aryl-N’,N ‘-di(pyridin-2-yl)-and N-aryl-N’,N ”-bis(6-methylpyridin-2-yl) guanidines (1-4 and 5-7) were isolated in 75%-81% yields. Reactions of Pd(OAc)(2) with guanidines 2-7 carried out separately in toluene at 60 degrees C for 3 h afforded 8-13 respectively in 69%-80% yields. Compounds 1-13 were characterized by elemental analyses, HR-MS, IR and NMR (H-1 and C-13) spectroscopy. Molecular structures of guanidines 1, 4, 5 and 6 and those of 8-13 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The Pd(II) atom in 8-10 revealed trans geometry while that in 11-13 revealed cis geometry. DFT calculations were carried out on model compounds 9a (trans) and its hypothetical cis isomer, 9b and 12a (cis) and its hypothetical trans isomer 12b which indicated a very small energy difference between the 9a/9b pair (1.28 kcal/mol) whereas a large energy difference was observed between the 12a/12b pair (26.38 kcal/mol) in CH2Cl2. The catalytic utility of 9 in Heck-Mizoroki coupling reactions involving styrene and methyl acrylate and aryl bromides/aryl chlorides in the presence of NaOAc and excess of tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) at 120 degrees C was explored. Both activated and de-activated aryl bromides and aryl chlorides were coupled with styrene and in addition, the aryl chlorides were coupled with methyl acrylate in the presence of 9 to afford the respective coupling products in 68% – > 99% yields. Neat reaction carried out with 9 and TBAB under the optimized condition released the colloidal Pd black as verified by EDAX, PXRD and SEM techniques thereby implying the heterogeneous nature of catalysis. We report a highly efficient ortho-selective electrophilic chlorination of phenols utilizing a Lewis basic selenoether catalyst. The selenoether catalyst resulted in comparable selectivities to our previously reported bis-thiourea ortho-selective catalyst, with a catalyst loading as low as 1%. The new catalytic system also allowed us to extend this chemistry to obtain excellent ortho-selectivities for unprotected anilines. The selectivities of this reaction are up to >20:1 ortho/para, while the innate selectivities for phenols and anilines are approximately 1:4 ortho/para. A series of preliminary studies revealed that the substrates require a hydrogen-bonding moiety for selectivity.

The adsorption behaviors of Cu(II) and tetracycline (TC) on polyethylene microplastics that were exposed to air (A-PE-MPs), water (W-PE-MPs) and soil (S-PE-MPs) environments for a long time were investigated with batch experiments in this study. FT-IR and GC-MS analysis confirmed that phthalates (PAEs) were released from PE microplastics after exposure to UV light. When exposed to water and soil environments, PE microplastics were colonized by microorganisms and biofilms were formed on their surface. Compared with virgin microplastics (V-PE-MPs), the environment-exposed microplastics possessed higher adsorption and stabilization capacity for Cu (II) and TC. The adsorption isotherm data of V-PE-MPs and A-PE-MPs were well fitted by Freundlich model, whilst the adsorption by W-PE-MPs and S-PE-MPs were better described by Langmuir model. The Boyd equation used in kinetic experiments revealed that V-PE-MPs and A-PE-MPs were additionally affected by intra-particle diffusion compared with W-PE-MPs and S-PE-MPs. The glycosyl composition analysis suggested that the higher adsorption capacities of S-PE-MPs than W-PE-MPs could relate to the different components of extracellular polysaccharides in biofilms. Moreover, density functional theory further verified that Cu(II) and PAE adsorption on microplastics could be enhanced by the generation of Cu-PAE and Cu-PAE-TC complexes. In addition dissolved organic matter exerted opposite effects on the adsorption onto A-PE-MPs and S-PE-MPs due to their different affinity for Cu(II), TC and DOM. This study demonstrated that the contribution of microplastics to heavy metal and antibiotic migration could be affected by the way they exposed to environments.

Although 3-azoindoles have recently emerged as an appealing family of photoswitch molecules, the synthesis of such compounds has been poorly covered in the literature. Herein a high-yielding and operationally simple protocol is reported allowing the synthesis of 3-azoindoles, featuring important steric hindrance around the azo motif. Remarkably, this C-H coupling is characterized by excellent atom economy and occurs under metal-free conditions, at room temperature, and within few minutes, delivering the expected products in excellent yields (quantitatively in most of the cases). Accordingly, a library of new molecules, with potential applications as photochromic compounds, is prepared.

Providing new methods for the selective functionalization of small molecules is highly desirable, because installing molecular diversity in a desired position, for example, allows one to modulate bioactive molecules. This work reports a method for the selective functionalization of anilines using hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) as a solvent to promote an acid-catalyzed hydroarylation of olefins. Mechanistic experiments revealed that HFIP both protonates the alkene and selectively enables anilines toward the electrophilic aromatic substitution. This powerful strategy has been applied to the functionalization of the anti-inflammatory mefenamic acid with chemocontrol and regiocontrol.

The Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction is an effective process for C-C bond formation in organic synthesis. Herein, we report a NiO nanodot-decorated Pd/SiC catalyst, synthesized by atomic layer deposition, which shows high photocatalytic activity for the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of both aryl bromides and chlorides with phenylboronic acid at 30 degrees C in air. The Mott-Schottky contact in SiC/Pd enhances the rapid transfer of the photogenerated electrons from SiC to Pd nanoparticles. Moreover, the energy different between the highest occupied molecular orbital of the ultrafine NiO nanodots and the Fermi level of Pd forces a spontaneous electron transfer from NiO to Pd. As a result, the concentrated electrons in the Pd nanoparticles can facilitate the cleavage of C-Br or C-Cl bonds, which normally requires rather high temperatures in thermal processes. Background The side reactions of dehalogenation or C-N coupling tend to occur when halogenated aromatic amines are prepared by catalytic hydrogenation reduction of halogenated aromatic nitro compounds. In this paper, we prepared the sub-microspherical Fe3O4@PDA-Pd NPs catalyst apply it efficiently in the hydrogenation reduction of halogenated aromatic nitro compounds to prepare the halogenated aromatic amines under atmospheric pressure. The catalyst shows a high selectivity of greater than 96% and can effectively inhibit the occurrence of the side reactions of dehalogenation and C-N coupling. Results The optimum condition of the hydroreduction reaction is when tetrahydrofuran is used as solvent and the reaction happens at 50 degrees C for 5 h. The selectivity of the chlorinated aromatic amine and the fluorinated aromatic amine products exceed 99% and the yield exceeds 90%. Only a small amount of dehalogenated products and C-N coupling by-products were produced in the brominated aromatic compound and the iodinated aromatic compound. Conclusion We developed a promising method for preparing the superparamagnetic and strongly magnetic Fe3O4@PDA core-shell sub-microsphere-supported nano-palladium catalyst for catalyzing the hydrogenation reduction of halogenated aromatic nitro compounds. The halogenated aromatic amines were efficiently and highly selectively prepared under atmospheric pressure, with the side reactions of dehalogenation and C-N coupling effectively inhabited simultaneously.

The presence of organic compounds in drinking water is well recognized in many developing countries; however, the occurrence of organic contaminants in the groundwater of Saudi Arabia, which is the main source of drinking water in the country, is not well documented. A national comprehensive study was carried out to assess the occurrence of organic compounds in groundwater wells used for drinking water purpose, in different regions of Saudi Arabia. A total of 993 well water samples were collected from all 13 administrative regions of the kingdom. Samples were analyzed for a total of 131 organic compounds using the standard methods. The results indicated that total organic carbon values were in the range of 0.01 to 84.13 mg/L with an average weighted value of 12.61 mg/L. Organic compounds were detected in only 9 regions, with 19.84% of the samples containing organic compounds. Only 96 wells (9.67%) showed contents of organic compounds above the safe limits. Pesticides were not detected in any of the well water samples. Overall, organic compounds were found in only 197 out of 993 wells (19.84%) in the whole country. Most of the wells containing organic compounds were located in residential, industrial, and agriculture areas. Riyadh region and Eastern Province were found to have the most affected wells as compared to other regions. Several regions did not show any organic compounds in the well waters. It can be said that the problem of groundwater contamination with organic compounds in Saudi Arabia is not acute and is manageable at present. It is, however, recommended that a regular monitoring of drinking water wells of all regions should be carried out by the competent authorities for organic compounds to know any contamination if and when it happens. Preventing such contaminants from reaching drinking water sources and protecting drinking water well heads from such contaminants remains a priority.

Here we report a protocol to synthesize diversiform fluorinated isocryptolepine analogues with potential biological activities in one step via directed C-2 and C-3 dual C-H functionalization of indoles. We also attempted to take into account fluorinated imidoyl chlorides as a novel kind of synthons in the directed C-H functionalization reactions. As a result, a variety of fluorinated isocryptolepine analogues were obtained in up to 96% yield. Moreover, we conducted control experiments to disclose the reaction mechanism.
