A concurrent tandem catalytic (CTC) methodology has been developed for the amidation of aryl chlorides where the aryl chloride is first converted to an aryl iodide via halogen exchange and the aryl iodide is subsequently transformed into the aryl amide. A variety of aryl chlorides were converted to aryl amides in up to 85% isolated yield using 20 mol % CuI, 60 mol % N,N’-cyclohexane-1,2-diamine, 2.2 equiv of K2CO3, and 1.05-1.5 equiv of amide in acetonitrile at 200 degrees C after 0.75-1 h. The same copper/ligand system served as multifunctional catalyst for both steps of the concurrent catalytic process with iodide present in substoichiometric amounts. Mechanistic studies were consistent with CTC amidation occurring via a nonradical mechanism. Kinetic modeling was conducted to investigate the effect of competitive direct amidation of an aryl chloride or aryl bromide on the formation of product over time during a CTC amidation reaction.

Providing new methods for the selective functionalization of small molecules is highly desirable, because installing molecular diversity in a desired position, for example, allows one to modulate bioactive molecules. This work reports a method for the selective functionalization of anilines using hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) as a solvent to promote an acid-catalyzed hydroarylation of olefins. Mechanistic experiments revealed that HFIP both protonates the alkene and selectively enables anilines toward the electrophilic aromatic substitution. This powerful strategy has been applied to the functionalization of the anti-inflammatory mefenamic acid with chemocontrol and regiocontrol.

Visible light-induced organic reactions are important chemical transformations in organic chemistry, and their efficiency highly depends on suitable photocatalysts. However, the commonly used photocatalysts are precious transition-metal complexes and elaborate organic dyes, which hamper large-scale production due to high cost. Here, for the first time, we report a novel strategy: light and oxygen-enabled sodium trifluoromethanesulfinate-mediated selective oxidation of C-H bonds, allowing high-value-added aromatic ketones and carboxylic acids to be easily prepared in high-to-excellent yields using readily available alkyl arenes, methyl arenes and aldehydes as materials. The mechanistic investigations showed that the treatment of inexpensive and readily available sodium trifluoromethanesulfinate with oxygen under irradiation of light couldin situform a pentacoordinate sulfide intermediate as an efficient photosensitizer. The method represents a highly efficient, economical and environmentally friendly strategy, and the light and oxygen-enabled sodium trifluoromethanesulfinate photocatalytic system represents a breakthrough in photochemistry.

Most microplastics (MPs) have undergone extensive aging in the environment. Aged MPs exhibit different physical and chemical properties from unaged ones. Here, we studied the effects of accelerated aging on the characteristics and pyrolysis of commercial pigmented MPs, as well as pigments leaching and their interactions in simulated gastric and intestinal fluids of mammals. We report that the carbonyl index, surface area, and color change of MPs increased after aging treatment. Cracks and fragmentation of MPs facilitated the accessibility of light and oxygen to internal layer and therefore accelerated the aging process. TGA/GC-MS analysis showed that the high temperature resistance of MN decreased after aging. Thermal decomposition of pigments and polyethylene occurred in temperature ranges of 340-406 degrees C and 406-550 degrees C, respectively. Mono (di)-alkenes and saturated alkanes were the thermal decomposition products of polyethylene. Aging of MPs also caused an increased release of pigments and prolonged aging time led to more release in simulated fluids. Pigments would result in fluorescence quenching of the enzymes through binding interactions once they were released from MPs into simulated fluids. Charge neutralization and polymer bridging accounted for the formation of pigment-enzyme complexes and flocs. These novel findings will allow us to better assess how aging process affects the characteristics, leaching, and toxicity of MPs. (C) 2020 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Coking wastewater is a typical industrial wastewater and contains a number of toxic and harmful organic pollutants which threaten human health. However, emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from coking wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is rarely studied. Here, the emission characteristics of VOCs were investigated in a full-scale coking WWTP composed of an anaerobic-oxic-oxic (A-O-1-O-2) treatment system. Furthermore, the potential health risks were assessed in this study. VOC emission rates were estimated at each unit of the coking WWTP and the influencing factors of e missions were discussed. Seventeen VOCs were identified in the air phase by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry combined with Tenax adsorption-thermal desorption method: benzene, toluene, and xylenes were predominant, and the concentration of total VOCs decreased gradually from the raw water tank (857.86 +/- 131.30 mu g m(-3)) to the effluent tank (28.56 +/- 3.96 mu g m(-3)). The total VOC emission rate from all units was 1773.42 g d(-1), corresponding to an annual emission of 0.65 tons year(-1). Since the treatment capacity of this coking WWTP was about 1500 m(3)d(-1), it was estimated that 1.18 g of VOCs are emitted during the treatment of 1 m(3) wastewater. Influencing factors of VOC emission mainly include the background concentration of VOCs in wastewater, operational parameters of the treatment processes, and physicochemical properties of VOCs. The carcinogenic risk of VOCs for workers in this coking WWTP ranged from 3.0 x 10(-5) to 7.8 x 10(-4), which exceeded an acceptable level (1.0 x 10(-6)). The non-carcinogenic risk hazard ratio of benzene exceeded 1, indicating that benzene has an obvious non-carcinogenic risk. Understanding VOCs emission characteristic and emission rates can help to identify the adverse effects of coking WWTPs on human health and provide relevant information for policy-making. We report a highly efficient ortho-selective electrophilic chlorination of phenols utilizing a Lewis basic selenoether catalyst. The selenoether catalyst resulted in comparable selectivities to our previously reported bis-thiourea ortho-selective catalyst, with a catalyst loading as low as 1%. The new catalytic system also allowed us to extend this chemistry to obtain excellent ortho-selectivities for unprotected anilines. The selectivities of this reaction are up to >20:1 ortho/para, while the innate selectivities for phenols and anilines are approximately 1:4 ortho/para. A series of preliminary studies revealed that the substrates require a hydrogen-bonding moiety for selectivity.

The upgrading of tar is a key issue for the sufficient application of biowaste pyrolysis technology. Molten salt, with high migration and diffusion of ions to prevent the deactivation of coke deposition of tar reforming functional metals, is considered as a feasible catalytic reaction medium and heat carrier for the upgrading of tar. The present study investigated the interactions between small molecular pyrolysis gases (including H-2, CO, CH4) and main tar model compound in ternary carbonate eutectics (Li2CO3-Na2CO3-K2CO3). The results demonstrated that H-2 could be decomposed to produce H radicals, promoting the conversion of toluene into gaseous products. CO32- could consume H radicals required by toluene cracking, making the process toluene polymerized to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons be strengthened. On the other hand, CO would react with OH radicals to produce H radicals and could enhance gas-generating process. In addition, toluene could react with CO to form benzaldehyde and phenylacetaldehyde. With the addition of CH4, more H radicals were supposed to be consumed, and toluene cracking process was further inhibited. Finally, the effect sequence of small molecular gases (H-2 > CH4 > CO) on toluene reforming reaction was authenticated by investigating the impacts of introducing any two gases in toluene reforming. Structural modifications of nicotinamide, a form of vitamin B3, gave rise to a series of compounds (8aa-8ce) that exhibit activities as type I positive allosteric modulators (PAMs) of human alpha 7 nAChR expressed in Xenopus oocytes in two-electrode voltage clamp assay. The compound 8ai was a potent and efficacious PAM with an EC50 = 3.34 +/- 1.13 mu M and the maximum activation effect of alpha 7 current over 1474 +/- 246% in the presence of acetylcholine (100 mu M). It is highly specific to alpha 7 nAChR over other subtypes of nAChR and 5-HT3A receptors. The structure-activity relationship analysis identified a key skeleton of nicotinamide nucleus critical for biological activity. Taken together, the 8ai as a type I PAM of alpha 7 nAChR may be beneficial for improvement of cognitive deficit.

One-pot synthesis of furan-2,5-dimethylcarboxylate (FDMC) from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is highly demanding for the commercial production of polyethylene furanoate (PEF). Herein, a direct synthesis of FDMC is reported from oxidative esterification of HMF using ultrafine CuO particles dispersed on nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanospheres (CuO/N-C-HNSs) as a catalyst and tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as an oxidizing and methylating reagent. The CuO/N-C-HNSs was prepared through a template protection-sacrifice strategy using SiO2 as a sacrificial template and histidine as the precursor for N and C. N-doping facilitated a strong interaction between the support and copper species, affording formation of CuO nanoparticles of less than 10 nm in size. By virtue of the highly dispersed CuO nanoparticles and a high BET surface area 373 m(2)/g, the CuO/N-C-HNSsshows excellent catalytic performance in the selective conversion of HMF into FDMC affording 93 % yield of the desired product with a TON value of 49. Furthermore, the oxidative esterification involving (SPC)-C-3-H bond functionalization is also demonstrated using the same catalyst.
