V2O5/TiO2-SiO2-MoO3 (TSM) catalysts exhibit enhanced redox capabilities, but the role of each species in the mixed oxide support is not well understood. Herein, the physicochemical characteristics of molybdenum oxide in TSM were investigated using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, and the performance of V/TSM catalysts for the oxidative decomposition of o-chlorotoluene was examined. The V/TSM catalysts exhibited superior performances in this decomposition reaction at low temperatures. The molybdenum species were highly dispersed as Mo6+, replacing Ti4+ in the anatase TiO2 framework and forming a solid solution. The redox capability of the vanadium species in the catalyst was enhanced by electron transfer from the TSM support to vanadium, likely due to the coexistence of Mo6+ and Ti(4+ )in the TSM solid solution, which has a unique structure. These results are expected to contribute to enhancing the abatement of dioxins at low temperatures.

The resolution of samples containing unknown compounds of different nature, or without standards available, as is the case of chromatographic fingerprints, is still a challenge. Possibly, the most problematic aspect that prevents systematic method development is finding models that describe without bias the retention behaviour of the compounds in the samples. In this work, the use of global models (able to describe the whole sample) is proposed as an alternative to the use of individual models for each solute. Global models contain parameters that are specific for each solute, while other parameters -related to the column and solvent- are common for all solutes. A special regression procedure is presented for the construction of global models, which are applied to predict highly complex chromatograms, such as chromatographic fingerprints, for diverse experimental conditions in isocratic and gradient elution. Another interesting application is the prediction of molecular properties, such as log P-o/w from the specific solute parameters of the global models. The examined adapted models are based on the equations proposed by Snyder, Schoenmakers, Neue and Kuss, Jandera, and Bosch Roses to describe the retention. In all cases, the predictive capability was very satisfactory. Two cases of study were considered: chromatograms of camomile extracts analysed using acetonitrile gradients, and a set of 145 known compounds in a wide range of structures and functionalities, eluted isocratically with acetonitrile/water mobile phases. Half-sandwich ruthenium(II) complexes containing eta(6)-coordinated 3-phenylpropanol and phosphinous-acid-type ligands, namely, [RuCl2(eta(6)-C6H5CH2CH2CH2OH){P(OH)R-2}] (R = Me (2a), Ph (2b), 4-C6H4CF3(2c), 4-C6H4OMe (2d), OMe (2e), OEt (2f), and OPh (2g), have been synthesized in 44-88% yield by reacting [RuCl2 {eta 6:k(1) (O)-C6H5CH2CH2CH2OH}] (1) with the appropriate pentavalent phosphorus oxide R2P(=O)H. The structure of [RuCl2(eta(6)-C6H5CH2CH2CH2OH){P(OH)Me-2}] (2a) was unequivocally confirmed by X-ray diffraction methods. Compounds 2a-g proved to be catalytically active in the isomerization of allylbenzenes into the corresponding (1-propenyl)benzene derivatives employing water as the sole reaction solvent, with [RuCl2(eta(6)-C6H5CH2CH2CH2OH){P(OH)(OPh)(2)}] (2g) showing the best performance and a broad substrate scope (73-93% isolated yields with E/Z ratios around 90:10 employing 1 mol % of 2g and 3 mol % of K2CO3, and performing the catalytic reactions at 80 degrees C for 4-24 h). The results herein presented show for the first time the utility of phosphinous acids as auxiliary ligands for metal-catalyzed olefin isomerization processes, reactions in which a cooperative role for the P-OH unit is proposed. On the other hand, the utility of complexes 2a-g as catalysts for ortho-arylation reactions of 2-phenylpyridine in water is also briefly discussed.

Here we report a protocol to synthesize diversiform fluorinated isocryptolepine analogues with potential biological activities in one step via directed C-2 and C-3 dual C-H functionalization of indoles. We also attempted to take into account fluorinated imidoyl chlorides as a novel kind of synthons in the directed C-H functionalization reactions. As a result, a variety of fluorinated isocryptolepine analogues were obtained in up to 96% yield. Moreover, we conducted control experiments to disclose the reaction mechanism.

Novel heteroleptic Ni (II) complexes bearing a highly hindered yet flexible IPr* ligand, Ni (IPr*)(PPh3)Br-2 (1) and Ni (IPr*)(PCy3)Br-2 (2) (IPr* = 1,3-bis(2,6-bis (diphenylmethyl)-4-methylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene), were easily prepared in 78% and 89% yield, respectively. Compared with 2 and its analogue bearing a less sterically demanding IPr ligand (IPr = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene), complex 1 exhibited superior catalytic activity in the magnesium-mediated reductive coupling of benzyl chlorides with aryl chlorides, featuring outstanding tolerance of both coupling partners with steric demand. This study discloses a ligand-facilitated reductive coupling of benzyl chlorides with aryl chlorides, which provides a new and practical synthetic tool for the synthesis of diarylmethanes.

A photo-induced atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) of aryl chlorides onto alkenes has been developed in the synthesis of chloroalkyl benzenes, in which chlorine radicals and aryl radicals can be generated simultaneously at ambient temperature without the involvement of any initiator or catalyst. The inherently reactive and energetic chlorine radicals also benefit a photo-induced aminocarbonylation reaction of aryl chlorides with carbon monoxide and amines via a hydrogen-abstraction step. These two reactions can provide an inspiration for organic reaction with a radical-designed process. Structural modifications of nicotinamide, a form of vitamin B3, gave rise to a series of compounds (8aa-8ce) that exhibit activities as type I positive allosteric modulators (PAMs) of human alpha 7 nAChR expressed in Xenopus oocytes in two-electrode voltage clamp assay. The compound 8ai was a potent and efficacious PAM with an EC50 = 3.34 +/- 1.13 mu M and the maximum activation effect of alpha 7 current over 1474 +/- 246% in the presence of acetylcholine (100 mu M). The structure-activity relationship analysis identified a key skeleton of nicotinamide nucleus critical for biological activity. A strategy involving bimetallic catalysis with a combination of Cp*Co(CO)I-2 and Cu(OAc)(2) was used for performing Buchwald-type C-N coupling reactions of aryl chlorides with amines. The reactions proceeded at 100 degrees C to produce excellent yields of many of the desired C-N coupled products, in 4 h, under aerobic reaction conditions. The reactions were shown to run under base-free and solvent-free conditions, enabling this strategy to work efficiently for electron-withdrawing and base-sensitive functionalities. The presented methodology was found to be equally efficient for electron-donating functionalities as well as for primary (1 degrees) and secondary (2 degrees) aromatic and aliphatic amines. Moreover, the products were easily separated through the extractions of the organic aqueous layer, with this process chromatographic separations is not required.

Piper nigrumL. is a widely used spice because of its flavour and health effects. It is prepared as black and white pepper, according to the harvest time and inclusion of the outer skin. Pepper pericarp is usually considered waste when making white pepper. In this study, bioactive and flavour compounds and minerals in the pericarp of black pepper were determined to identify its applications. The pericarp contained total phenol, total flavonoid and piperine contents of 1421.95 +/- 22.35 mg GAE/100 g, 983.82 +/- 8.19 mg CE/100 g and 2352.19 +/- 68.88 mg/100 g, respectively. There were higher levels of total phenols and total flavonoids in the pericarp compared with black pepper and white pepper. Piperine content was lower in the pericarp than in black pepper. The principal monoterpene compounds in the pericarp were alpha-pinene (9.2%), 2-beta-pinene (14.3%), delta-3-carene (21.5%) anddl-limonene (18.8%), and the primary sesquiterpenes were alpha-copaene (5.1%) and caryophyllene (17.2%). The higher percentages of flavour compounds found in the pericarp would impart a more potent odour, and the pericarp exhibited higher minor and tiny differences based on electronic nose analysis. It had more minerals than black pepper and peeled black pepper.

The Sonogashira reaction was investigated between phenylacetylene and various bromoand chloroarenes containing electron neutral, electron-rich, electron-poor, electron-deficient, and sterically hindered aryl fragments. The aryl alkynes coupling products were obtained with good to excellent yields at the optimized conditions using Ni(acac)(2) (0.3 mol%)/(Ph2P)(2)py (0.6 mol%)/CuI (0.03 mol%) as the catalyst, tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) as the additive, Et3N as the base in DMF at 100 degrees C under N-2 atmosphere.
