Li, Feng;Thiele, Sophia;Klok, Harm-Anton research published 《 Polymethylene Brushes via Surface-Initiated C1 Polyhomologation》, the research content is summarized as follows. Surface-initiated polymerization reactions are a powerful tool to generate chain-end-tethered polymer brushes. This report presents a synthetic strategy that gives access to structurally well-defined hydrocarbon polymer brushes of controlled mol. weights, which can be further modified to generate more complex surface-attached polymer architectures. The hydrocarbon brushes reported in this study are polymethylene brushes that are obtained via surface-initiated C1 polyhomologation of dimethylsulfoxonium methylide. The strategy outlined here is based on the use of an alkylboronic acid pinacol ester initiator, which allows for controlled, unidirectional chain growth by monomer insertion into only the C-B bond of the initiator and which presents the polymerization active group at the growing polymer chain end. This surface-initiated C1 polyhomologation methodol. is compatible with photopatterning strategies and can be used to generate micropatterned polymethylene brush films. Furthermore, conversion of the boronic ester chain-end functionalities to hydroxyl groups allows for selective chain-end modification and enables access to a variety of surface-anchored block copolymer architectures by chain extension via, for example, ring-opening or atom transfer radical polymerization chemistries.

Li, Bo;Xu, Hui;Dang, Yanfeng;Houk, K. N. research published 《 Dispersion and Steric Effects on Enantio-/Diastereoselectivities in Synergistic Dual Transition-Metal Catalysis》, the research content is summarized as follows. Comprehensive computational studies were carried out to explore the mechanisms of enantioselective Cu/Pd and stereodivergent Cu/Ir dual-catalytic syntheses of α,α-disubstituted α-amino acids (α-AAs). A chiral copper azomethine ylide undergoes facile α-allylation with racemic π-allylpalladium species or stereopure π-allyliridium complex to stereoconvergently or stereodivergently furnish single/double stereocenters, resp. Stereoselectivity at the α-center is controlled by the facial selectivity of α-allylation with respect to the prochiral nucleophile. Despite apparently similar transition-state assemblies, computational models and distortion/interaction analyses disclose versatile modes of stereoinduction wherein the copper azomethine ylide species can face-selectively intercept metal-π-allyl intermediates utilizing attractive dispersion interactions and/or sterically caused distortions. Generation of the β-stereocenter in the Cu/Ir system relies on a stereospecifically generated allyliridium complex and electronically controlled branched-to-linear selectivity, while the dual Cu/Pd system yields a linear monochiral product due to steric factors and π-π stacking interactions. The studies demonstrate on a mol. level how ligand-encoded chiral information is transferred to the α-/β-sites of the resulting α-AAs and how the mode of regio-/stereoselection is altered by differences in transition-metal-stabilized coupling partners. To facilitate studies of stereoselective catalysis, a suite of anal. tools to extract controlling factors for asym. induction is demonstrated.

An anti-folded bowl-shaped bisdibenzocorannulene (BDBC) featuring a new chair-cyclohexane-like hexagon as a bridge of two dibenzocorannulene moieties was reported. The neutral compound showed multiple redox-active properties and could be converted to the corresponding redox states through chem. reduction or oxidation Chem. reduction of BDBC by stoichiometric addition of metallic potassium in the presence of [18]crown-6 ether, provided a radical anion BDBC. and a dianion BDBC2-, resp.; while chem. oxidation by silver hexafluoroantimonate(V), converted the neutral compound to an open-shell singlet diradical dication (BDBC••)2+. The structural consequences of both electron-reduction and oxidation were closely related to the release of ring-strain of the bowl-shaped π-scaffold and imposed steric hindrance of the hexagonal bridge. In addition, the unusual open-shell nature of the dication could mainly be attributed to the changing of localized antiaromaticity in the closed-shell structure to delocalized character in the biradical, and thus the emergence of weakly bonded π-electrons.

Li, Bing;Liu, Min;Rehman, Sajid Ur;Li, Changkun research published 《 Rh-Catalyzed Regio- and Enantioselective Allylic Phosphinylation》, the research content is summarized as follows. Transition-metal-catalyzed branched and enantioselective allylic substitution of monosubstituted precursors with C, N, O, S, and fluoride nucleophiles was well-established. However, such a selective C-P bond formation was not realized probably due to the catalyst deactivation by the strong coordinating nature of phosphinylating reagents. Herein, the authors report a Rh-catalyzed highly regio- and enantioselective synthesis of allylic phosphine oxides in the presence of a chiral bisoxazoline-phosphine ligand. The application of α-hydroxylalkylphosphine oxides to keep the low concentration of the secondary phosphine oxides is essential for the high yields. The addition of di-Ph H3PO4 was found to not only activate allylic alcs. but also accelerate the C-P bond formation.

Li, Bin;Wang, Jiaxin;Li, Xiaoye;Xi, Jiayue;Wang, Ruoxuan;Zhang, Dongxu;Zheng, Xiaohui;Nie, Huifang;Zhang, Shengyong research published 《 Iridium-Catalyzed Enantioselective Hydrogenation of 3-Substituted Isoquinolinium Salts》, the research content is summarized as follows. Herein, an efficient enantioselective hydrogenation of 3-substituted isoquinolinium salts catalyzed by a bromine-bridged dimeric complex [{Ir(H)[(R,S,Sax)-Ph-ax-Josiphos]}2(μ-Br)3]+Br to gave chiral 3-phenyltetrahydroisoquinolines I [R = Me, Ph, 3-MeC6H4, etc.] was described. This efficient enantioselective transformation could provide a series of useful chiral cyclic amines, which were of great potential value in natural product modification and drug mol. preparation in high yields and moderate to excellent enantioselectivities (68-97% ee). Addnl., turnover number experiments and a gram-scale synthesis of chiral 3-phenyltetrahydroisoquinoline were conducted.
