Chiral beta-amino alcohols are important building blocks for the synthesis of drugs, natural products, chiral auxiliaries, chiral ligands and chiral organocatalysts. The catalytic asymmetric beta-amination of alcohols offers a direct strategy to access this class of molecules. Herein, we report a general intramolecular C(sp(3))-H nitrene insertion method for the synthesis of chiral oxazolidin-2-ones as precursors of chiral beta-amino alcohols. Specifically, the ring-closing C(sp(3))-H amination of N-benzoyloxycarbamates with 2 mol% of a chiral ruthenium catalyst provides cyclic carbamates in up to 99% yield and with up to 99% ee. The method is applicable to benzylic, allylic, and propargylic C-H bonds and can even be applied to completely non-activated C (sp(3))-H bonds, although with somewhat reduced yields and stereoselectivities. The obtained cyclic carbamates can subsequently be hydrolyzed to obtain chiral beta-amino alcohols. The method is very practical as the catalyst can be easily synthesized on a gram scale and can be recycled after the reaction for further use. The synthetic value of the new method is demonstrated with the asymmetric synthesis of a chiral oxazolidin-2-one as intermediate for the synthesis of the natural product aurantioclavine and chiral beta-amino alcohols that are intermediates for the synthesis of chiral amino acids, indane-derived chiral Box-ligands, and the natural products dihydrohamacanthin A and dragmacidin A.

This work presents a new triptycene-based stationary phase (TP-PEG) combining the three-dimensional (3D) triptycene (TP) framework with polyethylene glycol (PEG) moieties for gas chromatographic (GC) separations. Its statically coated capillary column showed high column efficiency of 5263 plates/m determined by naphthalene at 120 degrees C. Its Rohrschneider-McReynolds constants and Abraham solvation system constants were measured to characterize its polarity and molecular interactions with analytes of different types. As evidenced, the TP-PEG column showed high-resolution performance for the isomers of anilines, phenols, halobenzenes and alkanes with distinct advantages over the PEG columns, particularly those critical isomers such as 3,5-/2,3-xylidine (R = 2.94), m-/p-chlorotoluene (R = 1.92), p-/m-cresol (R = 1.89), 2,2-dimethylbutane/2-methylpentane (R = 1.51), 2,2,3-trimethylbutane /2,3-dimethyl pentane (R = 1.74) and 2,3-dimethylpentane/n-heptane (R = 1.92). In addition, it exhibited good column repeatability and reproducibility with the relative standard deviation (RSD) values of 0.02%-0.09% for run-to-run, 0.13%-0.22% for day-to-day and 2.7%-4.1% for column-to-column, respectively, and a wide operational temperature range (30 degrees C-280 degrees C). Disposable sanitary pads are a necessity for women’s health, but safety concerns regarding the use of these products have created anxiety. The aim of this study was to conduct a risk assessment of 74 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which were expected to be contained within sanitary pads. Of the 74 VOCs, 50 were found in sanitary pads retailed in Korea at concentrations ranging from 0.025 to 3548.09 mu g/pad. In order to undertake a risk assessment of the VOCs, the toxicological database of these compounds in the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), National Toxicology Program (NTP) and World Health Organization (WHO) was searched. Ethanol was found to exhibit the highest reference dose (RfD) while 1,2-dibromo-3-chloro-propane displayed the lowest RfD. Consequently, a worst-case exposure scenario was applied in this study. It was assumed that there was the use of 7.5 sanitary napkins/day for 7 days/month. In the case of panty liners or overnight sanitary napkins, the utilization of 90 panty liners/month or 21 overnight sanitary napkins/month was assumed, respectively. In addition, 43 kg, the body weight of 12 to 13-year-old young women, and 100% VOCs skin absorption were employed for risk assessment. The systemic exposure dose (SED) values were calculated ranging from 1.74 (1,1,2-trichloroethane) ng/kg/day to 144.4 (ethanol, absolute) mu g/kg/day. Uncertainty factors (UFs) were applied ranging from 10 to 100,000 in accordance with the robustness of animal or human experiments. The margin of exposure (MOE) of 34 VOCs was more than 1 (acceptable MOE > 1). Applicable carcinogenic references reported that the cancer risk of five VOCs was below 10(-6). Based on our findings, evidence indicates that the non-cancer and cancer risks associated with VOCs detected in sanitary pads currently used in South Korea do not pose an adverse health risk in women.

Dual effects of cathodic dechlorination and oxidative decomposition of 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid (2,4-DCBA) can be achieved using electrochemical reduction-oxidation technology. The removal efficiency was improved by optimizing the experimental conditions affecting electrode activity and contaminant degradation. The 2,4-DCBA removal efficiency reached 90.8% at a current density at 50 mA.cm(-2), initial pH of 5, and sodium sulfate concentration of 0.05 mol.L-1, with a 2,4-DCBA concentration of 20 mg.L-1. Furthermore, a good total organic carbon removal efficiency of 81.6% was achieved in the electrocatalytic reduction and oxidation process, with the present system retaining high stability after many experiment cycles. The reaction mechanism under different conditions is discussed, which provides new approaches to the degradation of chlorinated organic compounds.

The CTAB-Pd/GAC catalyst was obtained by functionalizing palladium/granular activated carbon (Pd/GAC) with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), which was used for the electrocatalytic reductive dechlorination of 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid (2,4-DCBA). The degradation rate of 2,4-DCBA by 40 mg g(-1) CTAB-Pd/GAC was 9.8 x 10(-3) (min(-1) g(-1) Pd), which was 11 folds than that by Pd/GAC (0.9 x 10(-3) min(-1) g(-1) Pd), and the value of q(e, 2,4-DCBA)/q(e), BA was 2.33 as compared to 0.67 for Pd/GAC. The combined result of dechlorination and adsorption experiments suggested that the functionalization by CTAB would enhance the 2,4-DCBA concentration on the surface of CTAB-Pd/GAC, and accelerate the degradation rate. However, the removal efficiency of 2,4-DCBA would decrease when the CTAB load reached 80 mg g(-1), due to the excessive adsorption capacity for dech-lorinated product. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations also proved that CTAB would increase adsorption capacity of catalyst and selective adsorption behavior of 2,4-DCBA, which accelerated the degradation rate of 2,4-DCBA.

In this study, 13 panaxadiol (PD) derivatives were synthesized via reactions with aromatic compounds and amino acids. Following this, the cytotoxicity of these compounds was evaluated against four cancer cell lines (human hepatoma cells HepG-2, human lung cancer cells A549, human breast cancer cells MCF-7, and human colon cancer cells HCT-116) and one normal cell lines (human gastric epithelial cells GES-1). The results showed that the panaxadiol derivatives 3, 12, and 13 showed significant inhibition of cellular proliferation against cancer cells compared with PD, and the panaxadiol derivative 12 had the lowest IC50 value for A549 (IC50=18.91 +/- 1.03 mu m). For MCF-7 cells, most compounds exhibited good inhibition of cellular proliferation, and the panaxadiol derivative 13 showed the strongest inhibitory effect (IC50=8.62 +/- 0.23 mu m), which significantly increased the cytotoxicity of PD and was stronger than the positive control (mitomycin). For normal cells, all compounds exhibited low or no toxic effects; thus, these derivatives can be used to develop novel antiproliferative agents.

A series of novel thiazolo[4,5-d]pyrimidin-7(6H)-ones (3aa-3eq) were designed, synthesized, and evaluated as the type I positive allosteric modulators of human alpha 7 nAChR expressed in Xenopus ooctyes by a two-electrode voltage clamp. The structure-activity relationship analysis identified the compound 3ea as a potent and efficacious PAM with the maximum activation effect of the alpha 7 current of over 1633% in the presence of acetylcholine (100 mu M) and an EC50 = 1.26 mu M. It is highly specific to alpha 7 nAChR over other subtypes of nAChR, 5-HT3A, NMDA, and GABA(A) receptors. Compound 3ea showed an elimination half-life of 10.8 +/- 1.5 h for 3 mg/kg, i.v., and 7.4 +/- 1.1 h for 60 mg/kg, i.g. in rat. It also exhibited sufficient blood-brain barrier penetration with no significant effect on hERG channel. Most importantly, compound 3ea dose-dependently (0.1-1 mg/kg, i.p.) reversed the prepulse inhibition deficit induced by MK-801 in the mouse schizophrenia model. X

The present research paper reports the convenient synthesis, successful characterization, in vitro antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant potency and biocompatibility of N-acyl-morpholine-4-carbothioamides (5a-5j). The biocompatible derivatives were found to be highly active against the tested bacterial and fungal strains. Moreover, some of the screened N-acyl-morpholine-4-carbothioamides exhibited excellent antioxidant potential. Docking simulation provided additional information about possibilities of their inhibitory potential against RNA. It has been predicted by in silico investigation of the binding pattern that compounds 5a and 5j can serve as the potential surrogate for design of novel and potent antibacterial agents. The results for the in vitro bioassays were promising with the identification of compounds 5a and 5j as the lead and selective candidate for RNA inhibition. Results of the docking computations further ascertained the inhibitory potential of compound 5a. Based on the in silico studies, it can be suggested that compounds 5a and 5j can serve as a structural model for the design of antibacterial agents with better inhibitory potential. [GRAPHICS] .
