The use of the nickel(ii) complex [(TEEDA)NiCl2] (1; TEEDA= N,N,N ‘,N ‘-tetraethyl-ethylendiamine) and nickel(0) complex [Ni(COD)(2)] (5) as pre-catalysts in the additive-free catalytic hydrogenation of benzonitrile (BN) is reported. In the presence of 1 (1 mol%), BN was hydrogenated under relatively mild reaction conditions (100 degrees C, 120 psi H-2, 72 h) to the corresponding secondary imine, N-benzylidenebenzylamine (BBA), in very good yield (83%). As a counterpart, 5 (1 mol%) selectively hydrogenated BN to benzylamine (BA) in excellent yield (96%) under similar reaction conditions (80 degrees C, 120 psi H-2, 24 h). In both cases, nickel nanoparticles (Ni-NPs) were identified as the catalytically active species. These Ni-NPs were formed in situ from 1 and 5 without external additives or additional stabilizers. The use of complex 5 was extended to the hydrogenation of different (hetero) aromatic and aliphatic nitriles.

A series of novel N-phenylbenzamide-4-methylamine acridine derivatives were designed and synthesized based initially on the structure of amsacrine (m-AMSA). Molecular docking suggested that the representative compound 9a had affinity for binding DNA topoisomerase (Topo) II, which was comparable with that of m-AMSA, and furthermore that 9a could have preferential interactions with Topo I. After synthesis of 9a and analogues 9b-9f, these were all tested in vitro and the synthesized compounds displayed potent antiproliferative activity against three different cancer cell lines (K562, CCRF-CEM and U937). Among them, compounds 9b, 9c and 9d exhibiting the highest activity with IC50 value ranging from 0.82 to 0.91 mu M against CCRF-CEM cells. In addition, 9b and 9d also showed high antiproliferative activity against U937 cells, with IC50 values of 0.33 and 0.23 mu M, respectively. The pharmacological mechanistic studies of these compounds were evaluated by Topo I/II inhibition, western blot assay and cell apoptosis detection. In summary, 9b effectively inhibited the activity of Topo I/II and induced DNA damage in CCRF-CEM cells and, moreover, significantly induced cell apoptosis in a concentration-dependent manner. These observations provide new information and guidance for the structural optimization of more novel acridine derivatives.

A highly effective C-O coupling reaction of (hetero)aryl electrophiles with primary and secondary alcohols is reported. Catalyzed by a Ni-II-aryl complex under long-wave UV (390-395 nm) irradiation in the presence of a soluble amine base without any additional photosensitizer, the reaction enables the etherification of aryl bromides and aryl chlorides as well as sulfonates with a wide range of primary and secondary aliphatic alcohols, affording synthetically important ethers. Catalytic activity of nickel(ii) and palladium(ii) N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes derived from imidazole, benzimidazole, and 1,2,4-triazole was comparatively evaluated in the cross-coupling reactions of aryl halides with arylboronic acids. Information on mixture adsorption equilibrium is vital in developing adsorption-based separation processes. Because measuring mixture adsorption is more difficult than measuring single-component adsorption, far more data of the latter kind are available. Previous efforts to compile experimental mixture adsorption data for gases have given data sets with at most a few dozen examples. Here, we report the results of systematic literature meta-analysis that produced a data set of more than 900 gas mixture adsorption experiments. This collection includes data from 125 different binary mixtures including 60 different molecular species and information from 333 different adsorbents. We refer to this data set as the Binary adsorption ISOtherm ExperimeNtal 2020 (BISON-20) Database. Because the BISON-20 data set enormously expands the number and variety of experimental results for binary gas adsorption that are readily available, it will be a useful resource for future efforts in developing new materials or processes for gas separations. As initial applications of the BISON-20 data set, we show how identifying replicate measurements can be used to assess the reliability of binary adsorption data, how the accuracy of Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory (IAST) can be systematically tested using experimental data, and how trends in selectivity for gas separations across many materials can be examined.

A three-component annulation reaction of N-alkyl anilines, cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds, and aryl aldehydes to julolidines and lilolidines is reported. The 6 pi-electrocyclization enabled the annulation to proceed with reversed regioselectivity as compared with the annulation that occurs in the Povarov reaction. Both cyclic and acyclic N-alkyl anilines participated in the reaction to provide a wide range of julolidines and lilolidines as the single regio- and diastereoisomers in good to excellent yields.

A series of novel thiazolo[4,5-d]pyrimidin-7(6H)-ones (3aa-3eq) were designed, synthesized, and evaluated as the type I positive allosteric modulators of human alpha 7 nAChR expressed in Xenopus ooctyes by a two-electrode voltage clamp. The structure-activity relationship analysis identified the compound 3ea as a potent and efficacious PAM with the maximum activation effect of the alpha 7 current of over 1633% in the presence of acetylcholine (100 mu M) and an EC50 = 1.26 mu M. It is highly specific to alpha 7 nAChR over other subtypes of nAChR, 5-HT3A, NMDA, and GABA(A) receptors. Compound 3ea showed an elimination half-life of 10.8 +/- 1.5 h for 3 mg/kg, i.v., and 7.4 +/- 1.1 h for 60 mg/kg, i.g. in rat. It also exhibited sufficient blood-brain barrier penetration with no significant effect on hERG channel. Most importantly, compound 3ea dose-dependently (0.1-1 mg/kg, i.p.) reversed the prepulse inhibition deficit induced by MK-801 in the mouse schizophrenia model. X

Four Schiff base manganese(III) complexes with derivatives of [(R,R)-N,N’-bis(salicy1idene)-1,2-cyclohexanediaminato)] including substituents on salicylaldehyde such as 3-methoxy, 3,5-di-tert-butyl and 3,5-chloro were synthesized and characterized using a combination of IR, UV-Vis, and HR ESI-MS techniques. The catalytic activity of these complexes was tested in the oxidation of 1-phenylethanol to acetophenone, revealing very good performances for all of the four manganese complexes. The catalytic reactions were carried out in the presence of tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as oxidant and imidazole as co-catalyst. Complex Mn-4, bearing electron withdrawing [(R,R)-N,N’-bis(3,5-di-chloro-salicylidene)-1,2-cyclohexanediaminato)] ligand was found to be the most stable of the tested Mn(III) complexes and was selected for the oxidation of several primary and secondary alcohols. Alternatives to the use of pressurized hydrogen (H-2) in chemical syntheses are of growing interest and importance in developing safer protocols. Ammonia borane (AB), with its high hydrogen content and ability to release H-2 under mild conditions, is one potential solution. However, optimization of AB dehydrogenation and further the use of AB as a H-2 source to facilitate tandem one-pot reactions with both high activity and stability is an ongoing research challenge. In this work, monodisperse AuPd nanoparticle (NP) catalysts were synthesized and systematically studied for AB dehydrogenation, and Au-rich NPs were found to be the most active composition for AB methanolysis with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 160 min(-1) surpassing most Pd-based NP catalysts to date. More importantly, Au-rich NPs were also active in the one-pot tandem reduction of a series of nitro-groups and the hydrodehalogenation of mono- and polyhalogenated persistent chemical pollutants under mild reaction conditions using only a 2:1 molar ratio of AB to substrate. The AuPd catalyst was stable after ten reaction runs for AB methanolysis and five reaction runs for tandem one-pot reactions without a loss of activity or change in NP structure and morphology.
