The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, toluene (100 ml) and water (200 ml) were added, and the mixture was stirred overnight. To the reaction mixture was added activated carbon (3 g), and the mixture was further stirred for 1 hr. The insoluble material was filtered off through Celite, and the insoluble material was washed with toluene (100 ml) and water (200 ml). The obtained filtrates were combined to allow for layer separation. The obtained organic layer was washed with water (100 ml), and the solvent was evaporated to give the title compound (67.7 g). 1H-NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-D6) delta: 7.88-7.86 (1H, m), 7.63 (1H, td, J=7.6, 1.4 Hz), 7.51 (1H, td, J=7.6, 1.4 Hz), 7.27 (1H, dd, J=7.6, 0.9 Hz), 7.18 (1H, d, J=8.6 Hz), 7.06 (1H, d, J=2.6 Hz), 6.95 (1H, dd, J=8.6, 2.6 Hz), 4.01 (2H, m), 3.80 (3H, s), 0.96 (3H, t, J=7.1 Hz).

The solvent was evaporated and flash chromatography of the residue (gradient elution 5% methanol/EtOAc-lO% methanol/ EtOAc) gave the product, methyl 4-(2-(dimethylamino)ethoxy)benzoate (2.0 g, 45% yield), as a light yellow oil.
