Investigation of PolyVinyl Chloride Plastisol Tissue-Mimicking Phantoms for MR- and Ultrasound-Elastography

Objective: Realistic tissue-mimicking phantoms are essential for the development, the investigation and the calibration of medical imaging techniques and protocols. Because it requires taking both mechanical and imaging properties into account, the development of robust, calibrated phantoms is a major challenge in elastography. Soft polyvinyl chloride gels in a liquid plasticizer (plastisol or PVCP) have been proposed as soft tissue-mimicking phantoms (TMP) for elasticity imaging. PVCP phantoms are relatively low-cost and can be easily stored over long time periods without any specific requirements. In this work, the preparation of a PVCP gel phantom for both MR and ultrasound-elastography is proposed and its acoustic, NMR and mechanical properties are studied. Materials and methods: The acoustic and magnetic resonance imaging properties of PVCP are measured for different mass ratios between ultrasound speckle particles and PVCP solution, and between resin and plasticizer. The linear mechanical properties of plastisol samples are then investigated over time using not only indentation tests, but also MR and ultrasound-elastography clinical protocols. These properties are compared to typical values reported for biological soft tissues and to the values found in the literature for PVCP gels. Results and conclusions: After a period of two weeks, the mechanical properties of the plastisol samples measured with indentation testing are stable for at least the following 4 weeks (end of follow-up period 43 days after gelation-fusion). Neither the mechanical nor the NMR properties of plastisol gels were found to be affected by the addition of cellulose as acoustic speckle. Mechanical properties of the proposed gels were successfully characterized by clinical, commercially-available MR Elastography and sonoelastography protocols. PVCP with a mass ratio of ultrasound speckle particles of 0.6%-0.8% and a mass ratio between resin and plasticizer between 50 and 70% appears as a good TMP candidate that can be used with both MR and ultrasound-based elastography methods.

Apoptosis-antagonizing transcription factor is involved in rat post-traumatic epilepsy pathogenesis

The present study aimed to explore the pathogenesis behind post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE). In the present study, a chloride ferric injection-induced rat PTE model was established. The expression levels of apoptosis-antagonizing transcription factor (AATF), cleaved caspase-3, p53, Bcl-2 and Bax were measured by western blotting or immunofluorescence staining (IF). The expression of AATF in vivo was downregulated by microinjection of lentiviral-mediated short-hairpin RNA. Compared with control and sham groups, at day 5 after PTE, neuron apoptosis was significantly increased and the expression levels of AATF, p53, cleaved caspase-3 and Bax were significantly upregulated. In addition, IF revealed co-localization of AATF and cleaved caspase-3 in the cortex. Additionally, AATF was expressed mainly in neurons and astrocytes. Following AATF inhibition, the expression levels of p53 and cleaved caspase-3 were significantly reduced as compared with the control group. Taken together, these findings suggested that following PTE, AATF is involved in neuronal apoptosis and may serve as a potential target for its alleviation.

Poly-2-amino-benzonitrile, a wide dynamic pH linear responding material

In this paper, poly-2-Aminobenzonitrile (PABN), might be thinking as a functionalized polyaniline (PANI), is prepared and its application in the potentiometric pH sensor is demonstrated. The obtained PABN is characterized by FTIR, UV-Vis Spectra, XPS, SEM, BET surface area analysis, and BJH pore size and volume analysis. The pH sensors are characterized by an open circuit potential method with the two-electrode system. The experimental results demonstrate that the potentiometric pH sensors have the near Nernstian sensitivity of -52 mV/pH in the wide range of pH 1 to 13 in phosphate buffers. Prepared pH electrode has significantly lower potential deviation, fluctuation, drift, and hysteresis in sensitivity performances and proved to be the useful one for practical application with long-time stability and repeatability. Ion selectivity tests demonstrate the promising ion-selective electrode of PABN. This idea might be helpful to design functional polymers that have wide range of corresponding properties. Vasoconstrictor and coagulation activator entrapped chitosan based composite hydrogel for rapid bleeding control

Chitosan (Cs) as a hemostatic agent has been in use to control hemorrage. Composite hydrogel formed by entrapment of vasoconstrictor-potassium aluminium sulfate (0.25 %PA) and coagulation activator-calcium chloride (0.25 %Ca) into Cs (2 %) hydrogel would enhance the hemostatic property of Cs. In this work, the prepared composite hydrogel was injectable, shear thinning, cyto and hemocompatible. The 2 %Cs-0.25 %PA0.25 %Ca composite hydrogel caused rapid blood clotting by accelerating RBC/platelet aggregation and activation of the coagulation cascade. Further, in vivo studies on rat liver and femoral artery hemorrage model showed the efficiency of 2 %Cs-0.25 %PA-0.25 %Ca composite hydrogel to achieve hemostasis in a shorter time (20 +/- 10 s, 105 +/- 31 s) than commercial hemostatic agents-Fibrin sealant (77 +/- 26 s, 204 +/- 58 s) and Floseal (76 +/- 15 s, 218 +/- 46 s). In in vivo toxicological study, composite hydrogel showed material retention even after 8 weeks post-surgery, therefore excess hydrogel should be irrigated from site of application. This prepared composite hydrogel based hemostatic agent has potential application in low pressure bleeding sites.

Research on vibration control for glass fiber reinforced polymer reinforced concrete (GFRP RC) frames subject to seismic loading

Deterioration of concrete structures caused by corrosion of steel reinforcement is a significant problem worldwide with high remediation costs. This problem has been addressed by corrosion protection systems, which prevent chlorides from penetrating the concrete cover and reacting with steel reinforcement. However, these solutions are complex and require high maintenance costs. In this paper, we propose to add viscous dampers to GFRP RC frames to improve its energy absorption capacity under seismic loading. Three RC frames were designed; two GFRP frames, and one steel RC frame. The fundamental dynamic parameters of RC frames with and without viscous dampers were calculated and compared. Results show that GFRP and steel RC frames can reach a similar lateral deformation, but the former is more fragile, with failure occurring at the compression zone of beams. Our results show that the addition of viscous dampers reduces the lateral deformation and story drifts in the GFRP RC frames. Moreover, the energy dissipation of viscous dampers is more efficient at GFRP RC frames. We conclude that the ductility and energy dissipation capacity of GFRP RC frames can be improved by adding viscous dampers and high lateral confinement, which demonstrates better performance than steel RC frames.

Durability deterioration of concrete under marine environment from material to structure: A critical review

Durability deterioration of cementitious concrete and reinforced concrete (RC) is critical to durability, safety, and sustainability of infrastructures, especially for offshore concrete structures under marine environment. In this paper, the effects of marine environment on the deterioration mechanism, performance, and durability of concrete materials and structures are systematically reviewed. For the deterioration mechanism, the effect of various chemicals in seawater and different marine exposure zones on the cementitious concrete and reinforced concrete is firstly analyzed and compared. At material level, this paper discusses the characterizations of cementitious concrete, including compressive strength, chloride diffusion, carbonation depth, and pore structure. On the other hand, the performance of cementitious concrete with the addition of supplementary cementitious materials was also compared when exposed to marine environment. At structure level, the durability of RC structures, including beams and slabs and other elements with corrosion protection under marine environment is evaluated. This paper also assesses some cases studies of RC structures after many years of exposure to marine environment. Furthermore, prospectives are proposed for practical applications on concrete under marine environment. The conclusions are of great benefit to the researchers and engineers in the concrete-related industry who aim to develop durable and sustainable concrete infrastructures under marine environment.

Oxalohydrazide Ligands for Copper-Catalyzed C-O Coupling Reactions with High Turnover Numbers

Here, we report a class of ligands based on oxalohydrazide cores and N-amino pyrrole and N-amino indole units that generates long-lived copper catalysts for couplings that form the C-O bonds in biaryl ethers. These Cu-catalyzed coupling of phenols with aryl bromides occurred with turnovers up to 8000, a value which is nearly two orders of magnitude higher than those of prior couplings to form biaryl ethers and nearly an order of magnitude higher than those of any prior copper-catalyzed coupling of aryl bromides and chlorides. This ligand also led to copper systems that catalyze the coupling of aryl chlorides with phenols and the coupling of aryl bromides and iodides with primary benzylic and aliphatic alcohols. A wide variety of functional groups including nitriles, halides, ethers, ketones, amines, esters, amides, vinylarenes, alcohols and boronic acid esters were tolerated, and reactions occurred with aryl bromides in pharmaceutically related structures.

Structural Effects of Cation Binding to DPPC Monolayers

Ions at the two sides of the plasma membrane maintain the transmembrane potential, participate in signaling, and affect the properties of the membrane itself. The extracellular leaflet is particularly enriched in phosphatidylcholine lipids and under the influence of Na+, Ca2+, and Cl- ions. In this work, we combined molecular dynamics simulations performed using state-of-the-art models with vibrational sum frequency generation (VSFG) spectroscopy to study the effects of these key ions on the structure of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine. We used lipid monolayers as a proxy for membranes, as this approach enabled a direct comparison between simulation and experiment. We find that the effects of Na+ are minor. Ca2+, on the other hand, strongly affects the lipid headgroup conformations and induces a tighter packing of lipids, thus promoting the liquid condensed phase. It does so by binding to both the phosphate and carbonyl oxygens via direct and watermediated binding modes, the ratios of which depend on the monolayer packing. Clustering analysis performed on simulation data revealed that changes in area per lipid or CaCl2 concentration both affect the headgroup conformations, yet their effects are anticorrelated. Cations at the monolayer surface also attract Cl-, which at large CaCl2 concentrations penetrates deep to the monolayer. This phenomenon coincides with a radical change in the VSFG spectra of the phosphate group, thus indicating the emergence of a new binding mode.

Silica coating of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles by reverse microemulsion method and their functionalization with cationic polymer P (NIPAm-co-AMPTMA) for antibacterial vancomycin immobilization

Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) have previously been demonstrated as a platform for antibiotic drug carriers in biomedicine. In this work, a new approach has been envisioned to improve the colloidal stability of IONPs in aqueous media as well as drug-nanoparticle interactions through the surface modification with poly[N-isopropylacrylamide-co-(3-acrylamidopropyl) trimethylammonium chloride], P(NIPAm-co-AMPTMA) via a multistep process. Briefly, surface modification of oleic acid coated nanoparticles (Fe3O4-OA), (prepared by co-precipitation), was carried out with tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) using an inverse microemulsion method and subsequently with reactive vinyl group (-CH = CH2) containing [3-(methacryloyloxy)propyl] trimethoxysilane (MPS) by a seed growth process. The MPS containing silica coated iron oxide particles (Fe3O4/SiO2), were used as seed for copolymerization of NIPAm and AMPTMA to obtain the thermally sensitive magnetic nanocomposites (MNCs), Fe3O4/SiO2/P(NIPAm-co-AMPTMA). Analysis of the prepared Fe3O4/SiO2/P(NIPAM-co-AMPTMA) nanocomposites showed well defined magnetic core and a modified silica shell with organic polymer. Changes in temperature resulted in alteration of the hydrodynamic diameter and zeta potential. To evaluate practical use of the MNCs, an antibacterial vancomycin was immobilized, and bacterial growth inhibition demonstrated the potential of these nanocomposites for application in biomedicine.

Polyamide Thin Films Grown on PD/SWCNT-Interlayered-PTFE Microfiltration Membranes for High-Permeance Organic Solvent Nanofiltration

Porous polymeric support membranes with outstanding organic solvent resistance are highly required for fabricating thin-film composite (TFC) organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes. In this work, we report the fabrication of a high-permeance TFC-OSN membrane by the use of a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) microfiltration membrane loaded with single-walled carbon nanotubes coated by a polydopamine (PD/SWCNT) network film (named the PD/SWCNT/PTFE composite membrane) as the support. Through interfacial polymerization between m-phenylenediamine and trimesoyl chloride, a polyamide (PA) thin film has successfully grown on the surface of the PD/SWCNT/PTFE composite membrane. The resulting PA TFC-OSN membrane exhibits a high methanol permeance up to 13.2 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1) with a rejection rate of 89.6% to 6-hydroxy-2-naphthalenesulfonic acid sodium salt (HNSA, M-w = 246.21). Moreover, the rejection rates of the PA TFC-OSN membrane to various dyes remain unchanged before and after DMF activation, indicating that it possesses an excellent resistance to organic solvents.
