Concentrating brine for lithium recovery using GO composite pervaporation membranes

The extraction process of highly demanded lithium from brine normally starts with a solar evaporation pond to increase the lithium concentration, which takes more than a year and is weather-dependent. This work evaluated the enrichment of lithium from salt lake brine using graphene oxide (GO) composite pervaporation membrane with the crystallizer unit. The deposition of stacked GO layer on the commercially available hydrophobic membranes can tackle the membrane wetting and salt crystallization issues. The initial water flux was 11 L/m(2) h at 70 degrees C, which was 20 times higher than that of solar evaporation pond (similar to 0.5 L/m(2) h) and 10 times lower footprint. With high initial feed concentration (>200 g/L of salt) the GO composite pervaporation membrane increased lithium concentration from 0.3 to 1.27 g/L (73% feed volume reduction). Assuming 10 m(3)/day capacity of the proposed solar pervaporation system, an economic analysis showed that the technique is not economically sustainable when solely aiming at the lithium extraction, while it becomes competitive with the traditional method when aiming at simultaneously producing deionized water and lithium. A payback time of 3.6-27 years is achievable with the sale price of water and LiOH at US$ 0.3-1 per 20 L and US$ 20 per kg, respectively. A continuous process is also possible with backup gas heater and waste heat.

Development of phantom materials with independently adjustable CT- and MR-contrast at 0.35, 1.5 and 3 T

Quality assurance in magnetic resonance (MR)-guided radiotherapy lacks anthropomorphic phantoms that represent tissue-equivalent imaging contrast in both computed tomography (CT) and MRimaging. In this study, we developed phantom materials with individually adjustable CT value as well as T-1- and T-2-relaxation times inMRimaging at three different magnetic field strengths. Additionally, their experimental stopping power ratio (SPR) for carbon ions was compared with predictions based on single- and dual-energy CT. Ni-DTPA doped agarose gels were used for individual adjustment of T-1 and T-2 at 0.35, 1.5 and 3.0 T. The CTvalue was varied by adding potassium chloride (KCl). By multiple linear regression, equations for the determination of agarose, Ni-DTPA andKCl concentrations for given T-1, T-2 andCT valueswere derived and employed to produce nine specific soft tissue samples. Experimental T-1, T-2 andCT values of these soft tissue samples were compared with predictions and additionally, carbon ion SPR obtained by range measurements were compared with predictions based on single- and dual-energy CT. The measured CT value, T-1 and T-2 of the produced soft tissue samples agreed very well with predictions based on the derived equations with mean deviations of less than 3.5%. While single-energy CT overestimates the measured SPR of the soft tissue samples, the dual-energy CT-based predictions showed a mean SPR deviation of only (0.2 +/- 0.3)%. To conclude, anthropomorphic phantommaterialswith independently adjustableCT values as well as T-1 and T-2 relaxation times at three different magnetic field strengths were developed. The derived equations describe the material specific relaxation times and the CT value in dependence on agarose, Ni-DTPA and KCl concentrations as well as the chemical composition of the materials based on given T-1, T-2 andCT value. Dual-energy CT allows accurate prediction of the carbon ion range in these materials.

Genomic analysis of a functional haloacid-degrading gene of Bacillus megaterium strain BHS1 isolated from Blue Lake (Mavi Golu, Turkey)

Purpose: Bacillus megaterium strain BHS1, isolated from an alkaline water sample taken from Mavi Golu (Blue Lake, Turkey), can grow on minimal medium containing 2,2-dichloropropionic acid. We characterized this bacterium at the genomic level. Methods: The HiSeq platform was used to carry out genome sequencing, de novo assembly, and scaffolding with strain BHS1. Next, genome data were analyzed to demarcate DNA regions containing protein-coding genes and determine the function of certain BHS1 genes. Finally, results from a colorimetric chloride ion-release assay demonstrated that strain BHS1 produces dehalogenase. Results: De novo assembly of the BHS1 genomic sequence revealed a genome size of similar to 5.37 Mb with an average G+C content of 38%. The predicted nuclear genome harbors 5509 protein-coding genes, 1353 tRNA genes, 67 rRNA genes, and 6 non-coding (mRNA) genes. Genomic mapping of strain BHS1 revealed its amenability to synthesize two families of dehalogenases (Cof-type haloacid dehalogenase IIB family hydrolase and haloacid dehalogenase type II), suggesting that these enzymes can participate in the catabolism of halogenated organic acids. The mapping identified seven Na+/H+ antiporter subunits that are vital for adaptation of the bacterium to an alkaline environment. Apart from a pairwise analysis to the well-established L-2-haloacid dehalogenases, whole-cell analysis strongly suggested that the haloacid dehalogenase type II might act stereospecifically on L-2-chloropropionic acid, D,L-2-chloropropionic acid, and 2,2-dichloropropionic acid. Whole-cell studies confirmed the utilization of these three substrates and the gene’s role in dehalogenation. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first report of the full genome sequence for strain BHS1, which enabled the characterization of selected genes having specific metabolic activities and their roles in the biodegradation of halogenated compounds.

Treatment of membrane concentrated leachate by two-stage electrochemical process enhanced by ultraviolet radiation: Performance and mechanism

Membrane systems are widely used for advanced leachate treatments in municipal waste incineration (MSWI) plants, resulting in the production of membrane concentrated leachate containing a high content of pollutants, especially refractory organics and salts. In this study, a two-stage electrochemical (TSE) process enhanced by ultraviolet (UV) radiation was applied to treat coagulated reverse osmosis concentrated leachate. Application of UV radiation throughout the TSE process produced remarkable results for pollutant removal because UV radiation promoted production of free radicals with strong oxidizing ability, which could function with active chlorine to oxidize pollutants, especially refractory organics. After the optimal UV-TSE (i.e., TSE process enhanced by UV radiation) treatment, the chemical oxygen demand, total organic carbon, light-absorbing substances (at 254 nm), ammonia nitrogen, and total nitrogen removal efficiencies were all more than 86%, and that of color, turbidity and chloride were more than 96%, which had better performance than TSE process. Following UV-TSE process, an obvious blue shift was observed in the UV-Vis spectra, with significant decrease in the absorbances in the UV region. The reduction in the intensity of peaks 1 and 2 in 3D fluorescence spectra was 87.37% and 88.90%, respectively. Flow field-flow fractionation analysis showed that the molecular weights of colored dissolved organic matter (DOM), humic-like DOM, and protein-like DOM deeply decreased. The UV-TSE treatment decomposed macromolecular organics into lower molecular organics more effectively and thoroughly, resulting in higher VOCs content in the treated sample, when compared with TSE-treated samples. These findings can shed light on the performance and organics removal mechanism of UV-TSE process, and provide a theoretical basis for the electrochemical treatment of membrane concentrated leachate from MSWI plants.

An emulsion-templated and amino diol-dictated porous material as an efficient and well recyclable boric acid scavenger

A facile way to fabricate a pH-stable, durable, and porous material with active amines (NHx, x= 1,2)-derived diol groups on a pore surface is reported. Branched polyethyleneimine (PEI) in water forms a supramolecular complex with sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), and this complex acts as an emulsifier. For the microcrystal cellulose (MC)-dispersed aqueous solution of PEI, SDBS is charged to turn the mixture into a medium internal phase air-in-water (A/W) emulsion upon oscillation. The emulsion is solidified by the partial crosslinking of PEI with polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (0.2 eq. of PEI NH groups) and further developed into an open-cellular monolith by removing the SDBS and water in the system. Under optimized conditions [pH 10, PEI at 20 % in water, and MC/PEI (50 % mass ratio)], the porous monolith (MC@PEI) shows a specific surface area of up to 14.9 m(2) g(-1). The amino groups are easily transformed into diols by treating with glycidol, and the resulting MC@PEI-diol can act as a scavenger to extract the trace boric acid in water. The adsorption follows the Langmuir model and shows chemical adsorption character with a boron-loading capacity of up to 2.68 mmol g(-1). Presaturing the scavenger with anionic dyes (488 mg g(-1)) exerts limited impact on the loading ability of BA. Additionally, the scavenger combines chemical stability in the absence of pH-labile bonds and mechanical durability for the composite structure with rigid MC skeleton and flexible PEI muscle.

Assessment of ecological hazards and environmental fate of disinfectant quaternary ammonium compounds

Disinfectant quaternary ammonium compounds (Quats) have diverse uses in a variety of consumer and commercial products, particularly cleaning products. With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, they have become a primary tool to inactivate the SARS-CoV-2 virus on surfaces. Disinfectant Quats have very low vapor pressure, and following the use phase of the products in which they are found, disposal is typically down-thedrain to wastewater treatment systems. Consequently, the potential for the greatest environmental effect is to the aquatic environment, from treated effluent, and potentially to soils, which might be amended with wastewater biosolids. Among the earliest used and still common disinfectant Quats are the alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (ADBAC) compounds and the dialkyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DDAC) compounds. They are cationic surfactants often found in consumer and commercial surface cleaners. Because of their biocidal properties, disinfectant Quats are heavily regulated for human and environmental safety around the world. Consequently, there is a robust database of information regarding the ecological hazards and environmental fate of ADBAC and DDAC; however, some of the data presented are from unpublished studies that have been submitted to and reviewed by regulatory agencies (i.e., EPA and European Chemicals Agency) to support antimicrobial product registration. We summarize the available environmental fate data and the acute and chronic aquatic ecotoxicity data for freshwater species, including algae, invertebrates, fish, and plants using peerreviewed literature and unpublished data submitted to and summarized by regulatory agencies. The lower limit of the range of the ecotoxicity data for disinfectant Quats tends to be lower than that for other surface active agents, such as nonionic or anionic surfactants. However, ecotoxicity is mitigated by environmental fate characteristics, the data for which we also summarize, including high biodegradability and a strong tendency to sorb to wastewater biosolids, sediment, and soil. As a result, disinfectant Quats are largely removed during wastewater treatment, and those residues discharged in treated effluent are likely to rapidly bind to suspended solids or sediments, thus mitigating their toxicity.

Balanced chemical reaction does not necessarily reveal either the individual elementary reactions by which a reaction occurs or its rate law. In my other articles, you can also check out more blogs about 50-30-6. Safety of 2,6-Dichlorobenzoic acid.

A Digallane Gold Complex with a 12-Electron Auride Center: Synthesis and Computational Studies

The reaction of Power’s digalladeltacyclane with Au(PPh3)CI led to formation of a digallium gold complex (2) with both chloride and gold bridging between two gallium atoms. The bonding parameters from the solid-state structure of 2 suggested a 12e(-) Au center stabilized by weakly coordinated aryl groups. DFT calculations at the M05-2X/[LANL2TZ(0,6-311G(d)] level indicated a Ga-Au-Ga banana bond with no bonding interactions between gallium atoms. The gold carries an NBO charge of -0.0956 e(-) and is best viewed as an auride. The weak intramolecular interactions between Au p orbitals and sigma(C-C) and sigma(C-H) bonds of the adjacent aromatic rings amount to significant stabilization of the electron-deficient gold center. The digallium complex 2 represents the first structural example of a 12 e(-) organometallic auride complex, demonstrating its pseudohalide/hydride nature in bonding.

Graphene oxide grafted gold nanoparticles and silver/silver chloride nanoparticles green-synthesized by a Portulaca oleracea extract: Assessment of catalytic activity

A Portulaca oleracea (or purslane) extract was used as a green reductant for synthesizing both gold nanoparticles and silver/optical chloride nanoparticles without the use of any other external reductants, surfactants, stabilizing agents, or halide ions. Both nanoparticles demonstrated their surface plasmon resonance at 543 nm for the gold nanoparticles and 423 nm for the silver/silver chloride nanoparticles. The X-ray diffraction pattern exhibited a face-centered cubic nanoparticle structure. Mainly spherical-shaped nanoparticles were observed in field emission transmission electron microscopy images with an average size of 11.34 +/- 4.23 nm for the gold nanoparticles and 15.01 +/- 4.49 nm for the silver/silver chloride nanoparticles. Graphene oxide-grafted gold nanoparticles and silver/silver chloride nanoparticles using the P. oleracea extract were synthesized by either in situ or ex situ methods. X-ray photoelectron spectra confirmed that gold and silver/silver chloride nanoparticles were successfully grafted onto the graphene oxide sheet. The catalytic activity of these graphene oxide nano composites was assessed with the 4-nitrophenol reduction reaction. Among the tested nanocomposites, graphene oxide-grafted silver/silver chloride nanoparticles synthesized by the ex situ method exhibited an excellent ca-pacity as a nanoscale catalyst with reasonable recyclability. The straightforward method offers new insight into grafting metallic nanoparticles onto graphene sheets via an entirely green strategy using plant extracts.

Mechanism-Based Personalized Medicine for Cystic Fibrosis by Suppressing Pseudo Exon Inclusion

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is caused by mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene that compromise its chloride channel activity. Here, we present a therapeutic strategy to ameliorate RNA splicing deficiency of CFTR with a small molecule. The 3,849 + 10 kb C>T is the most common splicing mutation in CF, creating a pseudo exon with premature stop codon. We reveal that the 3,849 + 10 kb C>T-induced CFTR pseudo exon is regulated by phosphorylation of serine/arginine-rich splicing factors, and their functional inhibition by a CDC-like kinase inhibitor restores normal splicing of CFTR. Subsequent screening of our focused chemical library identified CaNDY as a rectifier of the aberrant splicing. CaNDY treatment restored normal splicing of CFTR with the 3,849 + 10 kb C>T in CF patient cells and functional CFTR protein expression in the CF model cells. Our findings open the door for mechanism-based personalized medicine for pseudo-exon-type genetic diseases.

Direct comparison of gamma, electron beam and X-ray irradiation effects on single-use blood collection devices with plastic components

Effective sterilization methods for single-use devices are a growing need for the medical industry. Concerns with safety, throughput and source availability, however, prompt prudent contingency planning for gamma irradiation of devices suited for radiation sterilization. Electron beam (e-beam) and X-ray represent two alternatives to gamma radiation if they can be confirmed to be compatible with sterilization of the devices. To address this question, the effects of sterilization-relevant doses of e-beam and X-ray radiation are directly compared to the effects of gamma radiation using two prototypical commercial devices currently sterilized using cobalt-60 gamma radiation. These devices include components that comprise six distinct polymer materials commonly used in the medical device industry. The devices investigated are the Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) Vacutainer (TM) Plus tube, comprised of low-density polyethylene, chlorobutyl rubber, and polyethylene terephthalate components; and the BD Vacutainer (TM) Push Button Blood Collection Set, containing polypropylene, polyolefin elastomer, and polyvinyl chloride components. Changes in functionality, discoloration and select mechanical properties of components of each device were measured following exposure to targeted doses of 15, 35, 50 and 80 kGy. A statistical analysis was performed to determine if the effects of e-beam or X-ray radiation differ from the effects of gamma radiation for the properties considered. No devices were found to fail the functional performance tests at any of the doses considered. Small, but statistically significant differences were observed in device discoloration from e-beam, X-ray and gamma radiation following processing for certain materials at certain dose levels. Both e-beam and X-ray irradiation appear as viable alternatives to gamma irradiation for sterilization of the medical devices and materials considered.
