Deep compositional understanding of TBA: AlCl3 ionic liquid for its applications

Chloroaluminate ionic liquids (ILs) have been immensely used as homogeneous catalyst in Friedel-Crafts reaction. We have recently synthesized chloroaluminate ILs by reacting aluminium chloride with a hydrophobic neutral ligand i.e. tributylamine (TBA:AlCl3). The current study elaborates on the investigations of the composition of the ionic liquids at various stages of their formation. The ionic liquids were synthesized using various mole ratios of tributyl amine and aluminium chloride in range of 1:1 to 1:2.3, in presence of an aromatic solvent in a one pot reaction. Various characterization techniques like Mass spectrometry, Al-27 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, P-31 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy were used to elucidate the formation of various moieties of the TBA:AlCl3 Ionic Liquid. This study also elaborates on the investigations of the cationic and anionic moieties and their structure-property relationship for various applications. Various Friedel-Crafts reaction of industrial importance were performed using the ionic liquid having (Al2Cl7)(-) moiety to assess its performance and compared with conventional processes. The synthesized products were characterised by sophisticated analytical techniques like H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, FTIR, GC-MS, GC-FID, to name a few. This class of ionic liquids also have importance in various electrochemical applications like aluminium deposition and aluminium batteries. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The chloride-induced corrosion of a fly ash concrete with nanoparticles and corrosion inhibitor

The urge to reduce the carbon footprints from cement production warrants the development of more sustainable approaches in the construction industry. Towards this, the long term corrosion resistance of the embedded steel rebar in a novel ternary-blended reinforced concrete system with 56 wt% Ordinary Portland cement (OPC), 40 wt% fly ash, 2 wt% nanomodifiers, and 2 wt% corrosion inhibitor (referred to as CFNI) was studied by chemical and electrochemical tests in a simulated chloride environment for 180 days. The performance was compared with three other concrete systems (CC (100% OPC), CF (60 wt% OPC and 40 wt% fly ash) and CFN (58 wt% OPC, 40 wt% fly ash and 2 wt% nanomodifiers). The electrochemical results indicated a significant enhancement in the corrosion resistance of steel in the CFNI concrete as compared to other systems. A five times higher value of polarization resistance (R-p) is obtained in CFNI, as compared to the control concrete, indicate the better resistance of CFNI. Further, in CFNI specimen, the chloride ingress rate was significantly lower and the Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) images showed no microcracks or pores at the corroded concrete-steel interface of CFNI specimens. The apparent diffusion coefficient (D-cl) of the concrete system was determined using the bulk diffusion test and chloride profiling. The value of D-cl for CFNI concrete was found to be one order less in magnitude than other concrete specimens, indicating the enhanced resistance against chloride attack. These results show that CFNI concrete is a promising ternary-blended concrete mix to achieve long corrosion-free service life for the structures in aggressive chloride environments. Selective-cerebral-hypothermia-induced neuroprotection against-focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury is associated with an increase in SUMO2/3 conjugation

Selective cerebral hypothermia is considered an effective treatment for neuronal injury after stroke and avoids the complications of general hypothermia. Several recent studies hanve suggested that SUMO2/3 conjugation occurs following cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. However, the relationship between the cerebral protective effect of selective cerebral hypothermia and SUMO2/3 conjugation remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effect of selective cerebral hypothermia on SUMO2/3 conjugation during focal cerebral I/R injury. A total of 140 Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups. In the sham group, only the carotid artery was exposed. The endoluminal filament technique was used to induce middle cerebral artery occlusion in the other three groups. After 2 h of occlusion, the filaments were slowly removed to allow blood reperfusion in the I/R group. In the hypothermia (HT) group and normothermia (NT) group, normal saline at 4 degrees C and 37 degrees C, respectively , was perfused through the carotid artery, followed by the restoration of blood flow. The results of the modified neurological severity score (mNSS), 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining, hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining demonstrated that selective cerebral hypothermia significantly decreased I/R-induced neuronal injury (mNSS, n = 8, 24 h, HT (5.88 +/- 2.36) vs. I/R (8.63 +/- 3.38), P < 0.05. 48 h, HT (5.75 +/- 2.25) vs. I/R (8.5 +/- 2.88), P < 0.05. Cerebral infarct volume percentages, n = 5, HT (18.71 +/- 2.13) vs. I/R (41.52 +/- 2.90), P < 0.01. Cell apoptosis rate, n = 5, 24 h, HT (21.28 +/- 2.61) vs. I/R (43.72 +/- 4.30), P < 0.05. 48 h, HT (20.50 +/- 2.53) vs. I/R (38.94 +/- 2.93), P < 0.05). The expression of Ubc9 and conjugated SUMO2/3 proteins was increased at 24 and 48 h after reperfusion in the 3 non-sham groups, and hypothermia further upregulated the expression of Ubc9 and conjugated SUMO2/3 proteins in the HT group. The expression of SENP3 was increased in the NT group and I/R group, while it was decreased in the HT group at 24 and 48 h after reperfusion (Relative quantities, n = 5, Ubc9, 24 h, HT (2.44 +/- 0.22) vs. I/R (1.55 +/- 0.39), P < 0.05. 48 h, HT (2.69 +/- 0.16) vs. I/R (2.25 +/- 0.33), P < 0.05. SENP3, 24 h, HT (0.47 +/- 0.15) vs. I/R (2.18 +/- 0.43), P < 0.05. 48 h, HT (0.72 +/- 0.06) vs. I/R (1.51 +/- 0.19), P < 0.05. conjugated SUMO2/3 proteins, 24 h, HT (2.84 +/- 0.24) vs. I/R (2.51 +/- 0.20), P < 0.05. 48 h, HT (2.73 +/- 0.13) vs. I/R (2.44 +/- 0.13), P < 0.05). Further analysis showed that the variation in SENP3 expression was more obvious than that in Ubc9 under hypothermia intervention in the HT group. These findings suggest that selective cerebral hypothermia could increase SUMO2/3 modification mainly via down-regulating the expression of SENP3, and then exert neuropmtective effects in rats with cerebral I/R injury. Dequalinium chloride use in adult Spanish women with bacterial vaginosis: an observational study

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) represents the most frequent vaginal infection in women of childbearing age. The aim of this study was to characterise episodes of BV among adult Spanish women and their management with dequalinium chloride (DQC). Data from 573 DQC-treated BV adult women was obtained on medical records and questionnaires. The study shows that 20.6% had presented vaginal infections previously. Comorbid candidosis was significantly associated to other symptoms, such as pruritus or leucorrhoea. Most patients (64.3%) indicated a moderate-strong impact of the BV episode on their sexual life. After treatment, 84.8% of patients reported no BV symptoms. Patients were given instructions to prevent relapses. Most patients (83.1%) rated DQC as ‘satisfactory’ or ‘very/extremely satisfactory’ regarding symptom relief, prevention or treatment of the episode of BV. In conclusion, this study provides a better understanding of BV episodes and the impact of the treatment with DQC in real clinical practice in Spanish patients. IMPACT STATEMENT What is already known on this subject? Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most commonly reported vaginal infection among women of childbearing age. Despite the availability of antibiotic medications for the treatment of BV, management of this condition remains challenging. In fact, recurrence of BV has been reported for up to 50% of cases. However, antiseptic agents are considered an effective option for BV treatment. What the results of this study add? The study provides a better understanding of the prevalent symptomatology and the impact on quality of life of women with BV. Moreover, it has been observed that antiseptic dequalinium chloride (DQC) efficiently reduces symptoms and improves quality of life of the patients during episodes of BV. What the implications are of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? In the context of the World Health Organisation recommendations on the rational use of antibiotics, we believe that the use of DQC may be a good alternative to antibiotics as a therapy for BV.

Perspective: One-Cell and Cleavage-Stage Mouse Embryos Thrive in Hyperosmotic Oviductal Fluid Through Expression of a Glycine Neurotransmitter Transporter and a Glycine-Gated Chloride Channel: Clinical and Transgenerational Implications

The osmolality of mouse oviductal fluid ranges from about 300 mOsmol/kg in the ampulla 0-3 h post coitus (h p.c.) to more than 350 mOsmol/kg in the isthmus 34-36 h p.c. Thus, it has been surprising to find that development of one-cell and cleavage-stage mouse embryos arrests in vitro in media exceeding 300 mOsmol/kg, and they develop best in unphysiological, hypotonic media. The glycine concentration in oviductal fluid can, however, rescue development in hypertonic media, so physiological conditions in vivo and in vitro likely work together to foster embryo well-being. Glycine acts on one-cell and cleavage-stage mouse embryos through the glycine-gated chloride channel, GLRA4, and uptake via the glycine neurotransmitter transporter, GLYT1. Since these processes lead to further signaling in neurons, the presence and function of such signaling in preimplantation embryos also should be investigated. The more we know about the interactions of physiological processes and conditions in vivo, the better we would be able to reproduce them in vitro. Such improvements in assisted reproductive technology (ART) could improve patient outcomes for IVF and potentially help prevent unwanted developmental abnormalities in early embryos, which might include undesirable epigenetic DNA and histone modifications. These epigenetic modifications may lead to transgenerational adult disorders such as metabolic syndrome and related conditions.

The late consolidation of an aversive memory is promoted by VTA dopamine release in the dorsal hippocampus

The hippocampus has been implicated in the processing and storage of aversive memories but the precise mechanisms by which these memories persist in time remain elusive. We have demonstrated that dopaminergic neurotransmission in the dorsal hippocampus regulates the long-term storage of both appetitive and aversive memories at a critical time point known as late consolidation (12 hr after the learning experience). This modulation appears to have opposite effects depending on the valence of the stimuli, with hippocampal dopamine release peaking immediately and 13-17 hr after a rewarding experience. Here, we determined the release pattern of hippocampal dopamine following an aversive experience, in order to better understand this opposite modulation process. We observed significant increases in dopamine levels at several times (6-8, 11-12, and 15 hr) after subjecting rats to a conditioned place aversion (CPA) task with the aversive agent lithium chloride (LiCl). Early pharmacological blockade of hippocampal DA receptors impaired CPA memory consolidation. In addition and consistent with previous findings showing that late post-training infusions of dopaminergic agents into the hippocampus modulate the long-term storage of aversive memories, we found that the photostimulation of dopaminergic VTA fibers in the dorsal hippocampus 11-12 hr after CPA training was enough to transform a short-lasting long-term memory into a long-lasting one. The fact that the persistence of an aversive memory can still be affected several hours after the learning experience opens new avenues to develop behavioral and pharmacological strategies for the treatment of a variety of mental disorders.

Enhancing the Efficiency and Stability of Triple-Cation Perovskite Solar Cells by Eliminating Excess PbI2 from the Perovskite/Hole Transport Layer Interface

Metal halide perovskites are promising contenders for next-generation photovoltaic applications due to their remarkable photovoltaic efficiency and their compatibility with solution-processed fabrication. Among the various strategies to control the crystallinity and the morphology of the perovskite active layer and its interfaces with the transport layers, fabrication of perovskite solar cells from precursor solutions with a slight excess of PbI2 has become very common. Despite this, the role of such excess PbI2 is still rather controversial, lacking consensus on its effect on the bulk and interface properties of the perovskite layer. In this work, we investigate the effect of removing the excess PbI2 from the surface of a triple-cation mixed-halide Cs-0.05 (FA(0.83)MA(0.17))(0.95)Pb(I0.83Br0.17)(3) perovskite layer by four different organic salts on their photovoltaic performance and stability. We show that treatments with iodide salts such as methylammonium iodide (MAI) and formamidinium iodide (FM) can lead to the strongest beneficial effects on solar cell efficiency, charge recombination suppression, and stability while non-iodide salts such as methylammonium bromide (MABr) and methylammonium chloride (MACI) can also provide improvement in terms of charge recombination suppression and stability to a moderate extent in comparison to the untreated sample. Under optimized conditions and continuous solar illumination, the MAI- and FM-treated devices maintained 81 and 86% of their initial power conversion efficiency (PCEs), respectively, after 100 h of continuous illumination (versus 64% for the untreated solar cell with excess PbI2). Our study demonstrates that eliminating excess PbI2 at the perovskite/hole transport layer (HTL) interface by treating the perovskite surface with organic salts is a simple and efficient route to enhance the efficiency, and in particular the stability of perovskite solar cells.

Thermo-hydrodynamic analysis of drop impact calcium alginate gelation process

The phenomenon of calcium alginate gel formation from sodium alginate drop impact on calcium chloride liquid pool generates enormous scientific interest. The present work features on the investigation of interfacial heat transfer during sodium alginate drop impact on a heated calcium chloride liquid pool. The liquid pool has been heated at different temperatures varying from 20 degrees C to 70 degrees C. The drop chemically reacts at the interface and calcium alginate gel starts to form which has been instantaneously captured in a high-speed camera. A mathematical model on crater dynamics has been presented to determine the heat transfer coefficient and amount of interfacial heat transfer during the chemical reaction. Now, drop levitation over the vapour layer generated from the evaporation of liquid pool is defined as Leidenfrost pool Effect. This is characterized from the heat transfer at the crater initiation stage and accumulated vapour layer thickness, vapour pressure developed. The release of drop liquid is aided by the surface tension difference between drop and pool at the interface and it is defined as thermal Marangoni Effect. It has been characterized from the variation of Marangoni pressure with temperature which tends to drain away accumulated vapour layer. A critical liquid pool temperature has been obtained when Leidenfrost vapour pressure dominates over Marangoni pressure and resists the drop release during the gel initial regime. The dynamics of calcium alginate gelation is governed by intricate interplay between thermal Marangoni effect and Leidenfrost pool effect with its effect on initial gelation time and total gelation time. Mercury intrusion porosimetry parameters for use in concrete penetrability qualification using the Katz-Thompson relationship

This research studies relationships between pore parameters obtained from mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and experimental results to determine the potential for those parameters to quantify concrete penetrability using the Katz-Thompson relationship. Water permeability, electrical resistivity, and chloride ion penetrability were analyzed as these test methods serve as a proxy for penetrability. Recent developments in mercury intrusion porosimetry accommodate testing larger concrete specimens instead of paste or mortar. Consequently, this work directly compares calculated and measured permeability of nineteen concrete mixtures. By oven-drying the MIP specimens, the calculated permeability was increased due to microcracking; however, when using the same specimen conditioning procedure for MIP and water permeability testing, the resulting calculated and measured water permeability values were comparable. Anomalous inclusion of chloride ions in ethylenediammonium lead iodide turns 1D non-perovskite into a 2D perovskite structure

In this work, we demonstrate that 1D EDPbli crystals containing face -sharing Pb164- octahedra are synthesized using ethylenediammonium (ED) as an organic cation in hydroiodic acid. However, by the addition of hydrochloric acid to the synthetic solution, 2D [(ED)2Pb14]02 crystals are interestingly constructed without substitution of iodides by chlorides. The importance of chloride ions in the structure has been revealed by employing the single -crystal X-ray diffraction technique. Isolated chlorides, through forming hydrogen bonds with ammonium groups and creating (ED)202z+ templating layers, lessen the interplays between organic cations and inorganic units and consequently lead to the formation of almost undistorted Pb1,2- perovskite layers. The band gaps of the resultant crystals have been determined to be 2.72 eV and 2.30 eV for EDPb14 and [(ED)2Pb14]02, respectively. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements indicate that both compounds are thermally stable up to 250 C without any phase transition.
