Thermodynamic properties of some neoteric three-component deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and their mixture with water are of great practical and fundamental importance in various fields of sciences. In this work the measurements of density and speed of sound data for neat four DESs (choline chloride/lactic acid/ethylene glycol, choline chloride/lactic acid/glycerol, choline chloride/oxalic acid/ethylene glycol and choline chloride/oxalic acid/glycerol) and their aqueous mixture were carried out over the entire composition range at T = (288.15 to 318.15) K. Some of the thermodynamic properties including the excess molar volumes (V-E), the apparent molar volumes (V-phi,V-1 and V-phi,V-2), excess isobaric thermal expansion (alpha(E)(p, m)), the isentropic compressibility deviation (Delta kappa(s)) and speed of sound deviation (Delta u) were computed based on these data. These main properties were evaluated according to numerous solute-solvent interactions among the various components in the mixtures for all of the investigated systems. In addition, the properties were fitted by the Redlich-Kister and Hwang equations. Finally, the capability of Prigogine-Flory-Patterson (PFP) theory for reproducing the main experimentally observed properties of the investigated systems containing DESs. The binary interaction parameter chi(12) of PFP theory are negative and these represent the stronger interactions between the components (DESs + water), as compared to the self-interactions among the pure components in the systems. Nanocarbons as alternatives to metal-based catalysts have attracted great interest in heterogeneous catalysis. However, the powder form of nanocarbons limits their industrial applications because of the large pressure drop in a fixed-bed reactor and the big difficulties in handling loose powder in a fluidized-bed reactor. To address these issues, herein, we report a general poly(imidazolium-methylene)-assisted grinding strategy for synthesizing mechanically robust nanocarbon-embedded network monoliths by grinding a mixture composed of nanocarbons and the as-formed poly(imidazolium-methylene) chloride (PImM) with a subsequent pyrolysis process. The as-prepared nanocarbon-based network monoliths feature nanocarbons to be well-dispersed within a N-doped carbon (NC) network. The monolith is adequately hard and high density and can be cracked and sieved into granule nanocarbon catalysts. Taking nanodiamonds (NDs) as an example, in the grinding procedure, PImM can penetrate into ND aggregates to disperse NDs and can adhere the deagglomerated NDs because there is a strong interaction between NDs and PImM through strong cation-p interactions, pi-pi interactions, and electrostatic interactions since many nanocarbons including NDs have negative charges on their surface. The designed PImM plays three roles in the preparation of ND-embedded network monolith including the adhering agent, isolating agent, and a precursor of the NC network. The resulting granule ND@NC carbocatalyst from its corresponding ND@NC network monolith shows 6.39 mmol g(-1) h(-1) of steady-state styrene rate (9.26 and 2.24 times higher compared to that of NC and ND, respectively) with 99.0% of styrene selectivity for ethylbenzene direct dehydrogenation (EDH) to styrene, a commercially important reaction. The granule ND@NC carbocatalyst also shows high catalytic stability for EDH reaction. The strategy has been extended to carbon nanofiber-embedded monoliths. This work not only creates a granule carbocatalyst for styrene production via EDH reaction but also paves an avenue to overcome the bottleneck problems regarding the applications of the powders of diverse nanocarbons in heterogeneous catalysis.

The water gas shift reaction (WGSR) is a moderately exothermic reaction between carbon monoxide and steam to form carbon dioxide and hydrogen. In typical industrial applications, the WGSR is conducted as a two stage process. The high temperature stage, conducted over an iron based catalyst in the temperature range 320 – 450 degrees C. In addition to the traditionally used Fe-based catalysts for the HT-WGSR and Cu-based catalysts for the LT-WGSR, other catalysts such as nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, platinum, gold, rhodium, and ruthenium are active for the WGSR. Catalyst preparation and pre-treatment steps play a crucial role in catalyst activity.

Main observation and conclusion Although tandem reactions offer rapid access to structurally complex molecules in one-pot reaction, the selectivity issue needs to be addressed particularly when incompatible step reactions are involved. Herein, we report the selective synthesis of fused N-heterocycles from nucleophile-tethered alkenylamide and carbon monoxide via palladium (Pd)-catalyzed tandem carbonylative aza-Wacker-type cyclization. The electron-deficient nature of amide N-H and the intramolecular coordination of Pd with alkene accelerate the aminopalladation and effectively prevent the side oxidative carbonylation of diamine moiety to form urea. It is also found that the reported acyl Pd chloride intermediate may not be involved in this tandem cyclization. This work not only provides an efficient synthetic route to fused 1,4-diazepanones and 1,4-diazepanes but also inspires further development of tandem reactions for the diverse synthesis of heterocycles.

Structure and functionality of oat protein extracted by choline chloride-dihydric alcohol deep eutectic solvent and its water binary mixtures

This research reports an eco-friendly oat protein extraction method using choline chloride (ChCl)-butanediol deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and DES/water binary mixtures. Eighteen formulas consisting of ChCl with butanediol isomer (1,2-butanediol, 1,4-butanediol, or 2, 3-butanediol) in the absence or presence of water at different molar ratio were examined for the synthesis of DESs and binary mixtures. We found that 6 formulae can be fabricated at a ChCl-butanediol molar ratio of 1:3 independent of water presence, and that they had better oat extraction performance with 90 min extraction at 80 degrees C. Under the optimal conditions, we further assessed the impact of butanediol isomers and water addition on the structure characteristics and functionalities of extracted oat protein. The results suggested that oat protein extracted by ChCl-1,4-butanediol/water binary mixture had highest protein content, solubility, foaming capacity and stability. Our pilot findings provide crucial support to our hypothesis that the isomer of hydrogen bond donor is critically involved in the properties of oat protein the DES and the binary mixtures extracted, which pave the way for the future application of DES in protein extraction.

Further, composite fabrication switched the major degradative pathway from radical-induced oxidation to mediated electron transfer, as determined from the effects of methanol and chloride, formaldehyde and bromate formation yields, reactivity toward multiple organics, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectral features. The protective carbon shells enabled pH-insensitive peroxymonosulfate activation, prevented metal ion leaching, and alleviated catalyst deactivation.
