Hexane (200 ml) is added and the mixture washed with water (600 ml), dilute sulfuric acid (600 ml), dilute sodium hydroxide solution (600 ml), and water (600 ml), dried, and the solvent removed to give 1,3-bis(2-chloro-alpha,alpha,alpha-trifluoro-p-tolyloxy)benzene (8.6 g. 65%) b.p. 160-70 C./0.1 mm.

Filtration and evaporation of the solvent under reduced pressure yielded the hydrazine as a solid. After filtration and concentration, the residue was chromatographed on a silica gel column using a mixture of DCM and EtOAc (v/v = 100:1) as an eluent to give product 3a-e.
