A series of benzothiazole derivatives bearing a 1,3,4-thiadiazole moiety were designed, synthesized and evaluated for their antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral activities. The bioassay results indicated that most of target compounds showed good antiviral activities against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and antibacterial activities against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) and Ralstonia solanacearum (Rs). Especially, the anti-Xoo effect of title compounds 5k (N-(5-methoxybenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-2-((5-(2-tolyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)thio)acetamide) and the anti-Rs effect of title compounds 5a (N-(5-nitrobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-2-((5-(4-(trifluorom ethyl)phenyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)thio)acetmide) respectively reached 52.4% and 71.6% at 100 mu g/mL, which are superior to that of bismerthiazol (32.0% and 52.3%). In addition, the protective and inactivation activities of title compound 5i (N-(5-methoxybenzo [d]thiazol-2-yl)-2-((5-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)thio)acetamide) against TMV were 79.5% and 88.3%, respectively, which are better than that of ningnanmycin (76.4% and 86.8%). The above research showed that benzothiazole derivatives bearing a 1,3,4-thiadiazole moiety may be used as potential molecular templates in searching for highly-efficient antiviral and antibacterial agents.

Providing new methods for the selective functionalization of small molecules is highly desirable, because installing molecular diversity in a desired position, for example, allows one to modulate bioactive molecules. This work reports a method for the selective functionalization of anilines using hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) as a solvent to promote an acid-catalyzed hydroarylation of olefins. Mechanistic experiments revealed that HFIP both protonates the alkene and selectively enables anilines toward the electrophilic aromatic substitution. This powerful strategy has been applied to the functionalization of the anti-inflammatory mefenamic acid with chemocontrol and regiocontrol.

In this paper, synthesized Fe3O4 nanoparticles applied as catalyst in photodegradation of Direct Red 23 (DR23) dye using photo-Fenton process in aqueous solution. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Design of experiments (DOE) based on Taguchi approach was used. Analysis the response of each experiment was based Signal to Noise (S/N) ratio was calculated. The effective parameters for the degradation of dye were determined and optimized using Taguchi (L-9 (3(4))) orthogonal array experimental design method with four factors having three levels for each factor. The Taguchi approach showed that pH 3 (level 1), catalyst amount = 25 mg/L (level 2), H2O2 concentration = 15 ppm (level 3), and temperature = 35 degrees C (level 3) was optimum conditions for this process. The factor most influencing the process was determined using analysis of variance (ANOVA) method. The most significant factor in this process was pH. The interaction between pH x catalyst amount was the most influencing interaction. The percent (p (%)) of each factor on the degradation of dye was found to be in the following the order: pH (50.306%), catalyst amount (6.887%), H2O2 concentration (39.272%), and temperature (3.456%). The percentage contribution of factors in this process was found to be in the following the order: pH (0.332), catalyst amount (0.101), H2O2 concentration (0.291), and temperature (0.082). So first order reaction with k = 0.0472 min(-1) was observed for the photocatalytic degradation reaction.

OBJECTIVE Management of craniosynostosis at an early age is important for mitigating the risk of abnormal cranial development, but treatment can result in significant expenses. Previous research has shown that endoscope-assisted craniectomy (EAC) is less costly than open cranial vault remodeling (CVR) for patients with sagittal synostosis. The aim of this study was to strengthen the existing body of healthcare cost research by elucidating the charges associated with open and endoscopic treatment for patients with nonsagittal synostosis. METHODS The authors performed a retrospective analysis of data obtained in 41 patients who underwent open CVR and 38 who underwent EAC with postoperative helmet therapy for nonsagittal, single-suture craniosynostosis (metopic, coronal, and lambdoid) between 2008 and 2018. All patients were < 1 year of age at the time of surgery and had a minimum 1 year of follow-up. Inpatient charges, physician fees, helmet charges, and outpatient clinic visits in the 1st year were analyzed. RESULTS The mean ages of the children treated with EAC and open CVR were 3.5 months and 8.7 months, respectively. Patients undergoing EAC with postoperative helmet therapy required more outpatient clinic visits in the 1st year than patients undergoing CVR (4 vs 2; p < 0.001). Overall, 13% of patients in the EAC group required 1 helmet, 30% required 2 helmets, 40% required 3 helmets, and 13% required 4 or more helmets; the mean total helmeting charges were $10,072. The total charges of treatment, including inpatient charges, physician fees, outpatient clinic visit costs, and helmet charges, were significantly lower for the EAC group than they were for the open CVR group ($50,840 vs $95,588; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Despite the additional charges for postoperative helmet therapy and the more frequent outpatient visits, EAC is significantly less expensive than open CVR for patients with metopic, coronal, and lambdoid craniosynostosis. In conjunction with the existing literature on clinical outcomes and perioperative resource utilization, these data support EAC as a cost-minimizing treatment for eligible patients with nonsagittal synostosis. The heterocyclic compound 2-amino-N-(2-chloro-6-methylphenyl)thiazole-5-carboxamide (1), designed using 2-chloro-6-methylaniline (2) as the start material, was successfully obtained via multiple synthesis route and finally characterized by IR, H-1 NMR, and single-cystal X-ray crystallography. Purified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) grafted onto silica microspheres by gamma-radiation were applied as a HPLC stationary phase for investigating the intermolecular interactions between MWCNTs and substituted benzenes. The synthetic route, simple and not requiring CNTs derivatization, involved no alteration of the nanotube original morphology and physical-chemical properties. The affinity of a set of substituted benzenes for the MWCNTs was studied by correlating the capacity factor (k’) of each probe to its physico-chemical characteristics (calculated by Density Functional Theory). The correlation was found through a theoretical approach based on feedforward neural networks. This strategy was adopted because today these calculations are easily affordable for small molecules (like the analytes), and many critical parameters needed are not known. This might increase the applicability of the proposed method to other cases of study. Moreover, it was seen that the normal linear fit does not provide a good model. The interaction on the MWCNT phase was compared to that of an octadecyl (C18) reversed phase, under the same elution conditions. Results from trained neural networks indicated that the main role in the interactions between the analytes and the stationary phases is due to dipole moment, polarizability and LUMO energy. As expected for the C18 stationary phase correlation, is due to dipole moment and polarizability, while for the MWCNT stationary phase primarily to LUMO energy followed by polarizability, evidence for a specific interaction between MWCNTs and analytes. The CNT-based hybrid material proved to be not only a chromatographic phase but also a useful tool to investigate the MWCNT-molecular interactions with variously substituted benzenes. During drinking water treatment processes, anthropogenic compounds act as important precursors of disinfection by-products such as haloacetic acids (HAAs). Several transformations in these precursors occur prior to the disinfection stage, such as partial biodegradation. We hypothesized that this partial biodegradation of anthropogenic compounds potentially affects their HAA formation potentials (HAAFPs). In this study, the HAAFPs of 51 anthropogenic compounds after short-term contact (less than 1 h) and long-term contact (24 h) with activated sludge were compared. Considerable changes were observed particularly in trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) formation potentials (FPs) of phenols, demonstrating that biodegradation should be considered in investigations of potential precursors of HAAs. Phenols with low HAAFPs, such as hydroquinone, show higher HAAFPs after biodegradation, but HAAFPs of most phenols and anilines decreased after biodegradation. Thus, biodegradation will most likely have a positive impact on water quality from the standpoint of HAAFP reduction. For most aliphatic compounds, changes in HAAFP were negligible, but the dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) FP of acrylic acid largely increased. This study illustrates that biodegradation may have a large effect on the HAAFPs of anthropogenic compounds.

Unlike other DNA topoisomerase II (topo II) inhibitors, our recently identified acridone derivative E17 exerted strong cytotoxic activity by inhibiting topo II without causing topo II degradation and DNA damage, which promoted us to explore more analogues of E17 by expanding its chemical diversification and enrich the structure-activity relationship (SAR) outcomes of acridone-oriented chemotypes. To achieve this goal, 42 novel acridone derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their antiproliferative efficacies. SAR investigations revealed that orientation and spatial topology of R-3 substituents make greater contributions to the bioactivity, exemplified by compounds E24, E25 and E27, which has provided valuable information for guiding further development of acridone derivatives as promising drug candidates.

Background:Licensed therapies for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) do not yet exist, but clinical trials are testing treatment options. Inclusion criteria often require liver biopsy showing fibrosis (F2/3) or cirrhosis (F4) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). However, histological criteria pose a serious obstacle for recruitment. Aims:Characterize the relevance of liver biopsies in the selection of patients with NAFLD. Methods:Patients between 2013 and 2018 with the ICD-10 code K76.0 were analyzed. Fibrosis was defined by the NASH clinical research network (CRN) fibrosis staging system, NASH by a NAFLD activity score (NAS) >= 4. Predictive factors were determined by logistic regression. Fibrosis stage F0/F1/F2/F3/F4 was observed inN = 7/47/7/17/9, an NAS >= 4 inN = 27. Fibrosis stage F2/F3 and F4 along with NAS >= 4 was found in 1.7% and 0.5% of cases. Liver stiffness measurement, LSM (OR 2.3 per doubling of value; CI 1.3-4.4,p = .005) and FIB-4 (OR 2.3 per doubling of value; CI 1.2-4.4,p = .012) were significant predictors for fibrosis >= F2. Predictive factors for NASH were not identified. Conclusion:The biopsy rate in NAFLD patients is low and fibrosis >= F2 along with NAS >= 4 only present in a few cases. Transient elastography and FIB-4 are useful to select patients at risk for fibrosis for liver biopsy.
