Herein, we report the development of aryl halide-dependent chemoselective reactions, viz., the Buchwald-Hartwig type coupling reaction of an aryl iodide with an arylboronic acid and an aryl amine in the presence of a heterogeneous and reusable nickel catalyst and the Suzuki-Miyaura type coupling of an aryl chloride under similar conditions. Control experiments revealed that the presence of stoichiometric amounts of the phenylboronic acid/ester and aryl amine are essential for both reactions. NMR and XAFS studies suggested the formation of a boron-amine ate complex.

Graphitic carbon nitride materials have attracted significant interest in recent years and found applications in diverse light-to-energy conversions such as artificial photosynthesis, CO2 reduction, or degradation of organic pollutants. However, their utilization in synthetic photocatalysis, especially in the direct functionalization of C(sp(3))-H bonds, remains underexplored. Herein, we report mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-CN as a heterogeneous organic semiconductor photocatalyst for direct arylation of C(sp(3))-H bonds in combination with nickel catalysis. Our protocol has a broad synthetic scope (>70 examples including late-stage functionalization of drugs and agrochemicals), is operationally simple, and shows high chemo- and regioselectivities. Facile separation and recycling of the mpg-CN catalyst in combination with its low preparation cost, innate photochemical stability, and low toxicity are beneficial features overcoming typical shortcomings of homogeneous photocatalysis. Detailed mechanistic investigations and kinetic studies indicate that an unprecedented energy-transfer process (EnT) from the organic semiconductor to the nickel complex is operating.

A novel oxidative esterification of 1-arylprop-2-en-1-ols with toluene derivatives catalyzed by tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI) is reported. The optimization of the reaction conditions illustrates that each of experiment parameters including the catalyst, solvent, and oxidant is significant for present oxidative functionalization. This metal-free protocol has a broad substrate scope including the halogen groups for further functionalization and enriches the reactivity profile of allyl alcohol and toluene derivatives. In addition, this protocol represents a new transformation of allyl alcohol involving C-C bond cleavage and C-O bond forming.

We have discovered a new mode of reactivity of 1-thiosugars in the presence of Cu(II) or Co(II) for a stereoselective O-glycosylation reaction. The process involves the use of a catalytic amount of Cu(acac)(2) or Co(acac)(2) and Ag2CO3 as an oxidant in alpha,alpha,alpha-trifluorotoluene. Moreover, this protocol turned out to have a broad scope, allowing the preparation of a wide range of complex substituted O-glycoside esters in good to excellent yields with an exclusive 1,2-trans-selectivity. The late-stage modification of pharmaceuticals by this method was also demonstrated. To obtain a closer insight into the reaction mechanism, cyclic voltammetry was performed.

N-Aryl-N’,N ‘-di(pyridin-2-yl)-and N-aryl-N’,N ”-bis(6-methylpyridin-2-yl) guanidines (1-4 and 5-7) were isolated in 75%-81% yields. Reactions of Pd(OAc)(2) with guanidines 2-7 carried out separately in toluene at 60 degrees C for 3 h afforded 8-13 respectively in 69%-80% yields. Compounds 1-13 were characterized by elemental analyses, HR-MS, IR and NMR (H-1 and C-13) spectroscopy. Molecular structures of guanidines 1, 4, 5 and 6 and those of 8-13 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The Pd(II) atom in 8-10 revealed trans geometry while that in 11-13 revealed cis geometry. DFT calculations were carried out on model compounds 9a (trans) and its hypothetical cis isomer, 9b and 12a (cis) and its hypothetical trans isomer 12b which indicated a very small energy difference between the 9a/9b pair (1.28 kcal/mol) whereas a large energy difference was observed between the 12a/12b pair (26.38 kcal/mol) in CH2Cl2. The catalytic utility of 9 in Heck-Mizoroki coupling reactions involving styrene and methyl acrylate and aryl bromides/aryl chlorides in the presence of NaOAc and excess of tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) at 120 degrees C was explored. Both activated and de-activated aryl bromides and aryl chlorides were coupled with styrene and in addition, the aryl chlorides were coupled with methyl acrylate in the presence of 9 to afford the respective coupling products in 68% – > 99% yields. Neat reaction carried out with 9 and TBAB under the optimized condition released the colloidal Pd black as verified by EDAX, PXRD and SEM techniques thereby implying the heterogeneous nature of catalysis. Catalytic activity of nickel(ii) and palladium(ii) N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes derived from imidazole, benzimidazole, and 1,2,4-triazole was comparatively evaluated in the cross-coupling reactions of aryl halides with arylboronic acids. Ylide-functionalized phosphine (YPhos) ligands allow the palladium-catalyzed alpha-arylation of alkyl ketones with aryl chlorides with record setting activity. Using a cyclohexyl-substituted YPhos ligand, a wide range of challenging ketone substrates was efficiently and selectively monoarylated under mild conditions. A newly designed YPhos ligand bearing tert-butyl groups on the coordinating phosphorus atom is already active at room temperature. In this study, a novel approach was developed for the dechlorination of 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid (2,4-DCBA) via the combination of the moveable activated carbon (AC) supported palladium (Pd) nanoparticles and nickel (Ni) foam electrode. The morphology and chemical structure of Pd/AC catalyst was investigated by various characterization techniques, including SEM, TEM, EXS-mapping, XRD, and XPS. Pd nanoparticles was successfully loaded and dispersed on the AC, accompanied with the significantly enhanced reactivity. The removal rate of 2,4-DCBA by Ni electrode with moveable Pd/AC catalyst was 222, 25, and 5 folds higher than dispersed AC and Ni electrode system, chemical deposited Pd/Ni electrode, and electrodeposited Pd/Ni electrode, respectively. Compared with the conventional electrocatalytic reductive approach which deposited Pd on the Ni foam electrode, moveable Pd/AC catalyst possesses higher surface area, more atomic H* production and more active sites, favored mass transfer, and enhanced reactivity, without the consideration of catalyst loss and deactivation. The effects of Pd:AC mass ratio, constant current, initial solution pH, and electrolyte concentration on the dechlorination of 2,4-DCBA were studied. Generally, high Pd loading, constant current, and acidity favored the dechlorination of 2,4-DCBA, while excessive electrolyte would inhibit the dechlorination of 2,4-DCBA. Good longevity and recyclability of moveable Pd/AC catalyst was confirmed via consecutive experiments. The findings of the present study show that making the catalyst moveable is a promising strategy for electrocatalytic remediation technology.
