Coking wastewater is a typical industrial wastewater and contains a number of toxic and harmful organic pollutants which threaten human health. However, emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from coking wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is rarely studied. Here, the emission characteristics of VOCs were investigated in a full-scale coking WWTP composed of an anaerobic-oxic-oxic (A-O-1-O-2) treatment system. Furthermore, the potential health risks were assessed in this study. VOC emission rates were estimated at each unit of the coking WWTP and the influencing factors of e missions were discussed. Seventeen VOCs were identified in the air phase by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry combined with Tenax adsorption-thermal desorption method: benzene, toluene, and xylenes were predominant, and the concentration of total VOCs decreased gradually from the raw water tank (857.86 +/- 131.30 mu g m(-3)) to the effluent tank (28.56 +/- 3.96 mu g m(-3)). The total VOC emission rate from all units was 1773.42 g d(-1), corresponding to an annual emission of 0.65 tons year(-1). Since the treatment capacity of this coking WWTP was about 1500 m(3)d(-1), it was estimated that 1.18 g of VOCs are emitted during the treatment of 1 m(3) wastewater. Influencing factors of VOC emission mainly include the background concentration of VOCs in wastewater, operational parameters of the treatment processes, and physicochemical properties of VOCs. The carcinogenic risk of VOCs for workers in this coking WWTP ranged from 3.0 x 10(-5) to 7.8 x 10(-4), which exceeded an acceptable level (1.0 x 10(-6)). The non-carcinogenic risk hazard ratio of benzene exceeded 1, indicating that benzene has an obvious non-carcinogenic risk. Understanding VOCs emission characteristic and emission rates can help to identify the adverse effects of coking WWTPs on human health and provide relevant information for policy-making. Although 3-azoindoles have recently emerged as an appealing family of photoswitch molecules, the synthesis of such compounds has been poorly covered in the literature. Herein a high-yielding and operationally simple protocol is reported allowing the synthesis of 3-azoindoles, featuring important steric hindrance around the azo motif. Remarkably, this C-H coupling is characterized by excellent atom economy and occurs under metal-free conditions, at room temperature, and within few minutes, delivering the expected products in excellent yields (quantitatively in most of the cases). Accordingly, a library of new molecules, with potential applications as photochromic compounds, is prepared.

Electrochemical reduction-oxidation processes with the aid of cathode catalysts are promising technologies for the decomposition of organic compounds. High-efficiency and low-cost catalysts for electrochemical reductive dechlorination and two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are vital to the overall degradation of chlorinated organic compounds. This study reports electrochemical dechlorination using a single-atom Co-loaded sulfide graphene (Co-SG) catalyst via atomic hydrogen generated from the electrochemical reduction of H2O and electrolysis of hydrogen. The Co-SG electrocatalyst exhibited a remarkable performance for H2O2 synthesis with a half-wave potential of 0.70 V (vs RHE) and selectivity over 90%. The high electrochemical performance was achieved for bifunctional electrocatalysis with regard to the smaller overpotentials, faster kinetics, and higher cycling stability compared to the noble metal-based electrocatalysts. In this study, 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid was well degraded and the TOC concentration was effectively reduced. This work introduces the preparation of a new active site for high-performance single-atom catalysts and also promotes its application in the electrochemical degradation of chlorinated organic pollutants.

Vitamin B-6-Pd(II) immobilized onto magnetic nanoparticles have been successfully prepared and applied for C-Xcross-coupling reactions with aryl halides in green deep eutectic solvents. Developing efficient and recyclable heterogeneous catalysts for organic reactions in water is important for the sustainable development of chemical industry. In this work, Pd nanoparticles supported on DABCO-functionalized porous organic polymer was successfully prepared through an easy copolymerization and successive immobilization method. Characterization results indicated that the prepared catalyst featured big surface area, hierarchical porous structure, and excellent surface amphiphilicity. We demonstrated the use of this amphiphilic catalyst in two case reactions, i.e. the aqueous hydrodechlorination and Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions. Under mild reaction conditions, the catalyst showed high catalytic activities for the two reactions. In addition, the catalyst could be easily recovered and reused for several times. Also, no obvious Pd leaching and aggregation of Pd nanoparticles occurred up during the consecutive reactions.

Influenza hemagglutinin (HA) glycoprotein is the primary surface antigen targeted by the host immune response and a focus for development of novel vaccines, broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs), and therapeutics. HA enables viral entry into host cells via receptor binding and membrane fusion and is a validated target for drug discovery. However, to date, only a very few bona fide small molecules have been reported against the HA. To identity new antiviral lead candidates against the highly conserved fusion machinery in the HA stem, we synthesized a fluorescence-polarization probe based on a recently described neutralizing cyclic peptide P7 derived from the complementarity-determining region loops of human bnAbs FI6v3 and CR9114 against the HA stem. We then designed a robust binding assay compatible with high-throughput screening to identify molecules with low micromolar to nanomolar affinity to influenza A group 1 HAs. Our simple, low-cost, and efficient in vitro assay was used to screen H1/Puerto Rico/8/1934 (H1/PR8) HA trimer against similar to 72,000 compounds. The crystal structure of H1/PR8 HA in complex with our best hit compound F0045(S) confirmed that it binds to pockets in the HA stem similar to bnAbs FI6v3 and CR9114, cyclic peptide P7, and small-molecule inhibitor JNJ4796. F0045 is enantioselective against a panel of group 1 HAs and F0045(S) exhibits in vitro neutralization activity against multiple H1N1 and H5N1 strains. Our assay, compound characterization, and small-molecule candidate should further stimulate the discovery and development of new compounds with unique chemical scaffolds and enhanced influenza antiviral capabilities.
