Three new N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-Pd(II) complexes using 5-phenyloxazole as the ancillary ligand have been obtained in moderate to good yields by a one-pot reaction of the corresponding imidazolium salts, palladium chloride and 5-phenyloxazole under mild conditions. Initial studies showed that one of the complexes is an efficient catalyst for the Buchwald-Hartwig amination of aryl chlorides with various secondary and primary amines under the varied catalyst loading of 0.01-0.05 mol%, thus it will enrich the chemistry of NHCs and give an alternative catalyst for the coupling of challenging while cost-low aryl chlorides. A silica-based network was used to immobilize ionic liquid-based ionogels and applied as a fiber coating for solid-phase microextraction (SPME). The ionogels were prepared by a sol-gel process, using two ionic liquids, triethylsulfonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Set(3)][TFSI]) and 1-butyl-1-methylpiperidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C(4)C(1)Pip] [TFSI]), as well as their equimolar mixture. Methyltrimethoxysilane was used as the sol-gel precursor, and trifluoroacetic acid as a reaction catalyst. The fabricated ionogel fibers were evaluated as sorbent coating in headspace SPME combined with gas chromatography with barrier ionization discharge detection for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The fibers showed a high affinity to aromatic VOCs, yielding good sensitivity and precision. Then, the developed method was applied to the analysis of aqueous samples. During the study, the main extraction parameters, i.e., salt concentration, extraction time, and temperature, were optimized for maximum fiber sorption and to maximize the enrichment factors. The average limits of detection were found to be 0.15 mu g L-1, 0.40 mu g L-1, and 0.07 mu g L-1, and the enrichment factors were in the 25700-61000, 33200-84700, and 29100-96500 ranges for [Set(3)], [C4C1 Pip] and [Set(3)/C4C1 Pip], respectively. The single fiber and fiber-to-fiber reproducibilities were below 11.2% and 30.6%, respectively. The results of this work suggest the possibility of fabricating selected extractants based on the physicochemical properties of the ionic liquids and target analytes.

While the synthesis of biaryls has advanced rapidly in the past decades, cross-Ullman couplings of aryl chlorides, the most abundant aryl electrophiles, have remained elusive. Reported here is the first general cross-Ullman coupling of aryl chlorides with aryl triflates. The selectivity challenge associated with coupling an inert electrophile with a reactive one is overcome using a multimetallic strategy with the appropriate choice of additive. Studies demonstrate that LiCl is essential for effective cross-coupling by accelerating the reduction of Ni(II) to Ni(0) and counteracting autoinhibition of reduction at Zn(0) by Zn(II) salts. The modified conditions tolerate a variety of functional groups on either coupling partner (42 examples), and examples include a three-step synthesis of flurbiprofen.

Ozone pollution, which can be caused by photochemical reactions, has become a serious problem. The ozone formation potential (OFP) is used to describe the photochemical reactivity. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are main precursors of ozone formation, and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are important sources of VOCs. Therefore, it is necessary to study the concentration level and OFP of VOCs from WWTPs. In this work, a coking WWTP with anaerobic-oxic-oxic (A/O/O) processes in Shaoguan city, Guangdong province, China, was selected to investigate the characteristics of VOCs at wastewater treatment areas and office areas. The OFP of VOCs was estimated by the maximum incremental reactivity (MIR) coefficient method. Results showed that 17 VOCs were detected, and the total concentration of VOCs was the highest at the raw water tank (857.86 mu g m(-3)). The benzene series accounted for 69.0%-86.9% and was the main component of VOCs in the WWTP. Based on OFP data, the top six VOCs contributing most to the OFP were m-xylene, toluene, p-xylene, o-xylene, styrene, and benzene. This study provides field data and information on the environmental risk of VOCs for coking companies and environmental departments. We found that the priority control sources of VOCs were wastewater treatment units because of their larger OFP contributions.

A novel, sustainable, environmentally friendly, high substrate scope, efficient, solvent-free and metal catalyst-free method for the cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) reaction between N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) and benzyl/ether compounds is described. This coupling reaction proceeds through ultrasound acceleration. Compared to conventional heating conditions, the use of ultrasound techniques not only improves the reaction efficiency and enhances the reaction rate but also minimizes the side reactions.

The resolution of samples containing unknown compounds of different nature, or without standards available, as is the case of chromatographic fingerprints, is still a challenge. Possibly, the most problematic aspect that prevents systematic method development is finding models that describe without bias the retention behaviour of the compounds in the samples. In this work, the use of global models (able to describe the whole sample) is proposed as an alternative to the use of individual models for each solute. Global models contain parameters that are specific for each solute, while other parameters -related to the column and solvent- are common for all solutes. A special regression procedure is presented for the construction of global models, which are applied to predict highly complex chromatograms, such as chromatographic fingerprints, for diverse experimental conditions in isocratic and gradient elution. Another interesting application is the prediction of molecular properties, such as log P-o/w from the specific solute parameters of the global models. The examined adapted models are based on the equations proposed by Snyder, Schoenmakers, Neue and Kuss, Jandera, and Bosch Roses to describe the retention. In all cases, the predictive capability was very satisfactory. Two cases of study were considered: chromatograms of camomile extracts analysed using acetonitrile gradients, and a set of 145 known compounds in a wide range of structures and functionalities, eluted isocratically with acetonitrile/water mobile phases. A class of 2-aminopyridine 1-oxides are discovered to be effective ligands for the Cu-catalyzed amination of less reactive (hetero)aryl chlorides. A wide range of functionalized (hetero)aryl chlorides reacted with various aliphatic amines to afford the desired products in good to excellent yields under the catalyst of CuI/2-aminopyridine 1-oxides. Furthermore, the catalyst system worked well for the coupling of cyclic secondary amines and N-methyl benzylamine with (hetero)aryl chlorides.

4-Methyltetrahydropyran (4-MeTHP) is a hydrophobic cyclic ether with potential for industrial applications. We herein report, for the first time, a comprehensive study on the performance of 4-MeTHP as an organic reaction solvent. Its broad application to organic reactions includes radical, Grignard, Wittig, organometallic, halogen-metal exchange, reduction, oxidation, epoxidation, amidation, esterification, metathesis, and other miscellaneous organic reactions. This breadth suggests 4-MeTHP can serve as a substitute for conventional ethers and harmful halogenated solvents. However, 4-MeTHP was found incompatible with strong Lewis acids, and the C-O bond was readily cleaved by treatment with BBr3. Moreover, the radical-based degradation pathways of 4-MeTHP, THP and 2-MeTHF were elucidated on the basis of GC-MS analyses. The data reported herein is anticipated to be useful for a broad range of synthetic chemists, especially industrial process chemists, when selecting the reaction solvent with green chemistry perspectives.

Aryl ketones are ubiquitous structural motifs in organic synthesis. Nonetheless, the traditional methods for their generation are often costly and not environment-friendly. Herein we report a novel and efficient route for the preparation of aryl ketones by photocatalysis at mild conditions. Porous C3N4 nanorods decorated with spatially separated Ag and Co3O4 nanoparticles on the interior and exterior surface of C(3)N(4)( )hollow sphere (Co3O4/Ag@C3N4) fabricated by a facile method of supramolecular self-assembly. Using this porous material as photocatalyst and O-2 as oxidant, aryl ketones could efficiently generate (with a yield up to 75.7% and selectivity to 97%) via toluene and halobenzene under visible-light irradiation at room temperature. The present study not only provides an inexpensive strategy for aryl ketones generation but also an effective tactic for activation of sp(3 )C-H bonds under mild conditions. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd.
