Herein we disclosed the utilization of copper loaded zinc oxide (ZnO-Cu) for its stimuli (O-2/light) responsive switchable performance between its reduced (S-1) and oxidized (S-2) state for two antagonistic reactions, namely oxidation of alkyl arenes/heteroarenes to aldehydes/ketones and reduction of nitro arenes/heteroarenes corresponding amines. The two states of the catalyst showed its switchable performance as highly active and poorly active catalyst for oxidation and reduction, and both reactions could be turned off and on by changing the stimuli (light and O-2/N-2). The switching efficiency between the states and their relative reactivity were found to be consistent under variety of reaction conditions and remain unaltered irrespective of oxidation-reduction (or vice versa) sequence and substrates used in the reaction. The photo catalysts (S-1 and S-2) demonstrated good catalytic activity, multiple reusability, broad substrate scope, and reasonable functional group tolerance for both the reactions and probed its quality performance in a large-scale setup. The system was used in an assisted tandem catalysis setup for the synthesis of benzyl amines utilizing both oxidation and reduction reaction by stimuli responsive switching between the states of the catalyst.

An operationally simple nickel-catalyzed hydroarylation reaction for alkynes is described. This three component coupling reaction utilizes commercially available alkynes and aryl bromides, along with water and Zn. An air-stable and easily synthesized Ni(II) precatalyst is the only entity used in the reaction that is not commercially available. This reductive cross-coupling reaction displays a fairly unusual anti selectivity when aryl bromides with ortho substituents are used. In addition to optimization data and a preliminary substrate scope, complementary experiments including deuterium labeling studies are used to provide a tentative catalytic mechanism. We believe this report should inspire and inform other Ni-catalyzed carbofunctionalization reactions.

High-temperature thermal energy storage in shallow aquifers can potentially increase ambient groundwater temperatures up to 70 degrees C or even more. Since an increase in temperature is expected to influence contaminant mass flux into groundwater monitoring the spreading of organic contaminants located in the subsurface is crucial. In numerous former studies, the NAPL solubility, one major parameter controlling mass flux on field scale, was measured at temperatures up to 70 degrees C for a broad spectrum of organic substances. However, quantitative calculations of solubilities as a function of temperature considering a compiled database are largely missing. Aiming to examine the reliability of existing solubility-temperature relationships, to describe them functionally and further to identify knowledge gaps, previously published data on solubilities of 42 different organic groundwater contaminants were evaluated in this study. By using a common temperature regression function, the calculated solubility curves from compiled solubility data for 5-70 degrees C show relative changes between a few percent (CHCs and BTEX) and up to 2000% (PAH5). As published temperature-dependent solubilities for chlorinated ethylenes are contradictory in parts, solubilities of tetrachloroethylene, trichloroethylene, 1,2-cis-dichloroethylene and 1,2-trans-dichloroethylene were additionally investigated in more detail using batch experiments between 5 and 70 degrees C. The results show distinctive solubility minima at medium temperatures (20-40 degrees C) with concentrations decreasing from 5 degrees C to the minimum by 10-20%. The measured and calculated temperature-dependent solubilities enable a more reliable assessment of thermal energy storage at contaminated sites, of existing thermal remediation approaches and of combinations of underground heat storage with groundwater remediation. The presence of organic compounds in drinking water is well recognized in many developing countries; however, the occurrence of organic contaminants in the groundwater of Saudi Arabia, which is the main source of drinking water in the country, is not well documented. A national comprehensive study was carried out to assess the occurrence of organic compounds in groundwater wells used for drinking water purpose, in different regions of Saudi Arabia. A total of 993 well water samples were collected from all 13 administrative regions of the kingdom. Samples were analyzed for a total of 131 organic compounds using the standard methods. The results indicated that total organic carbon values were in the range of 0.01 to 84.13 mg/L with an average weighted value of 12.61 mg/L. Organic compounds were detected in only 9 regions, with 19.84% of the samples containing organic compounds. Only 96 wells (9.67%) showed contents of organic compounds above the safe limits. Pesticides were not detected in any of the well water samples. Overall, organic compounds were found in only 197 out of 993 wells (19.84%) in the whole country. Most of the wells containing organic compounds were located in residential, industrial, and agriculture areas. Riyadh region and Eastern Province were found to have the most affected wells as compared to other regions. Several regions did not show any organic compounds in the well waters. It can be said that the problem of groundwater contamination with organic compounds in Saudi Arabia is not acute and is manageable at present. It is, however, recommended that a regular monitoring of drinking water wells of all regions should be carried out by the competent authorities for organic compounds to know any contamination if and when it happens. Preventing such contaminants from reaching drinking water sources and protecting drinking water well heads from such contaminants remains a priority.

Ozone pollution, which can be caused by photochemical reactions, has become a serious problem. The ozone formation potential (OFP) is used to describe the photochemical reactivity. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are main precursors of ozone formation, and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are important sources of VOCs. Therefore, it is necessary to study the concentration level and OFP of VOCs from WWTPs. In this work, a coking WWTP with anaerobic-oxic-oxic (A/O/O) processes in Shaoguan city, Guangdong province, China, was selected to investigate the characteristics of VOCs at wastewater treatment areas and office areas. The OFP of VOCs was estimated by the maximum incremental reactivity (MIR) coefficient method. Results showed that 17 VOCs were detected, and the total concentration of VOCs was the highest at the raw water tank (857.86 mu g m(-3)). The benzene series accounted for 69.0%-86.9% and was the main component of VOCs in the WWTP. Based on OFP data, the top six VOCs contributing most to the OFP were m-xylene, toluene, p-xylene, o-xylene, styrene, and benzene. This study provides field data and information on the environmental risk of VOCs for coking companies and environmental departments. We found that the priority control sources of VOCs were wastewater treatment units because of their larger OFP contributions.

Cancer is a leading cause of death all over the world. HGF/MET signaling pathway is involved in many cancers and its inhibition has great potential as an effective therapeutic intervention. A series of 1H-pyrrolo [2,3-b]pyridine derivatives has recently been identified with cytotoxic activity, and most of them exhibited considerable potencies with IC50 values under 10 mu M. The present study was carried out with the specific aim to shed light upon the quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) to design and predict the activity of new potent inhibitors using molecular fingerprints and some 2D and 3D descriptors. The built model was statistically significant in terms of R-2 = 0.90 and R-pred(2) = 0.91 values. Fingerprint PubchemFP759 (1-chloro-2-methylbenzene) was the most effective fragment in the biological activity and just appeared in the most active compound 7j with a pIC(50) value of 8.0. A similarity search study was applied based on compounds 7c and 17e, with reported inhibitory activity against c-Met kinase, which showed that also other compounds could possess similar effects against c-Met enzyme. The most promising compound 7g-cl was subjected to docking and molecular dynamics simulation. Two hydrogen bonds between Lys1110, Met1160, and 7g-cl were stable during the equilibrium time range. The suggested modifications might be considered in future studies to design more efficient anticancer agents.

We report herein the first Cu-catalysed borylation of a wide range of aryl chlorides with different electronic and steric properties using a readily prepared NHC-stabilised Cu catalyst and (KOBu)-Bu-t as the base with B(2)pin(2) (pin = pinacolato) as the boron reagent. The aryl chlorides are converted into their corresponding arylboronic esters in good yields. The new procedure shows broad functional group tolerance, and B(2)neop(2) (neop = neopentyl glycolato) can also be applied as the boron reagent.

The cooperation of Bacillus subtilis strain DKT and Comamonas testosteroni KT5 was investigated for biofilm development and toluenes and chlorobenzenes degradation. Bacillus subtilis strain DKT and C. testosteroni KT5 were co-cultured in liquid media with toluenes and chlorobenzenes to determine the degradation of these substrates and formation of dual-species biofilm used for the degradation process. Bacillus subtilis strain DKT utilized benzene, mono- and dichlorinated benzenes as carbon and energy sources. The catabolism of chlorobenzenes was via hydroxylation, in which chlorine atoms were replaced by hydroxyl groups to form catechol, followed by ring fission via the ortho-cleavage pathway. The investigation of the dual-species biofilm composed of B. subtilis DKT and C. testosteroni KT5 (a toluene and chlorotoluene-degrading isolate with low biofilm formation) showed that B. subtilis DKT synergistically promoted C. testosteroni KT5 to develop biofilm. The bacterial growth in dual-species biofilm overcame the inhibitory effects caused by monochlorobenzene and 2-chlorotoluene. Moreover, the dual-species biofilm showed effective degradability toward the mixture of these substrates. This study provides knowledge about the commensal relationships in a dual-culture biofilm for designing multispecies biofilms applied for the biodegradation of toxic organic substrates that cannot be metabolized by single-organism biofilms.

In the spontaneous ion exchange process, there is the formation of compact heterojunctions and three-dimensional octahedral structures. By controlling the ion exchange level, the composition of (CdxZn1-x)(3) (TMT)(2) hybrid nanomaterials can be regulated, and the composite can be used as a template to generate octahedral CdS-ZnS. Photocatalytic oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde was used as a model reaction to evaluate the performance of the as-prepared samples, and the CZ-2 catalyst shows the highest photocatalytic activity, giving a benzaldehyde formation rate of 1078 mu mol.g(-1).h(-1) without the need of any solvent. The excellent performance is ascribed to the octahedral structure which is large in specific surface area and compact in heterojunctions. It is envisaged that the method is suitable for the generation of heterojunctions for photocatalytic purposes.
