We have explored the effect of a co-existing metal in the ligand-free Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction of an aryl chloride, which is promoted by a continuous irradiation type microwave and a palladium nanoparticle catalyst, and found that the co-existing metal affects this reaction due to its absorption ability of microwave energy in the reaction system. We also observed that spiking occurred more frequently in the presence of a co-existing metal.

Alternatives to the use of pressurized hydrogen (H-2) in chemical syntheses are of growing interest and importance in developing safer protocols. Ammonia borane (AB), with its high hydrogen content and ability to release H-2 under mild conditions, is one potential solution. However, optimization of AB dehydrogenation and further the use of AB as a H-2 source to facilitate tandem one-pot reactions with both high activity and stability is an ongoing research challenge. In this work, monodisperse AuPd nanoparticle (NP) catalysts were synthesized and systematically studied for AB dehydrogenation, and Au-rich NPs were found to be the most active composition for AB methanolysis with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 160 min(-1) surpassing most Pd-based NP catalysts to date. More importantly, Au-rich NPs were also active in the one-pot tandem reduction of a series of nitro-groups and the hydrodehalogenation of mono- and polyhalogenated persistent chemical pollutants under mild reaction conditions using only a 2:1 molar ratio of AB to substrate. The AuPd catalyst was stable after ten reaction runs for AB methanolysis and five reaction runs for tandem one-pot reactions without a loss of activity or change in NP structure and morphology.

Information on mixture adsorption equilibrium is vital in developing adsorption-based separation processes. Because measuring mixture adsorption is more difficult than measuring single-component adsorption, far more data of the latter kind are available. Previous efforts to compile experimental mixture adsorption data for gases have given data sets with at most a few dozen examples. Here, we report the results of systematic literature meta-analysis that produced a data set of more than 900 gas mixture adsorption experiments. This collection includes data from 125 different binary mixtures including 60 different molecular species and information from 333 different adsorbents. We refer to this data set as the Binary adsorption ISOtherm ExperimeNtal 2020 (BISON-20) Database. Because the BISON-20 data set enormously expands the number and variety of experimental results for binary gas adsorption that are readily available, it will be a useful resource for future efforts in developing new materials or processes for gas separations. As initial applications of the BISON-20 data set, we show how identifying replicate measurements can be used to assess the reliability of binary adsorption data, how the accuracy of Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory (IAST) can be systematically tested using experimental data, and how trends in selectivity for gas separations across many materials can be examined.

Functionalized beta-lactams are highly important motifs in synthetic chemistry. We report an efficient and novel approach to the synthesis of beta-lactams via a copper(i)-catalyzed cascade process involving C(benzyl)-H radical abstraction, intermolecular alkene addition, and intramolecular amination reaction. Variously substituted alkenes were synthesized from vinylacetic acid, leading to the corresponding beta-lactams in moderate to good yields. Preliminary studies indicate that the reaction undergoes a free radical mechanism via a Cu(i)/Cu(ii)/Cu(iii) catalytic cycle.

The presence of organic compounds in drinking water is well recognized in many developing countries; however, the occurrence of organic contaminants in the groundwater of Saudi Arabia, which is the main source of drinking water in the country, is not well documented. A national comprehensive study was carried out to assess the occurrence of organic compounds in groundwater wells used for drinking water purpose, in different regions of Saudi Arabia. A total of 993 well water samples were collected from all 13 administrative regions of the kingdom. Samples were analyzed for a total of 131 organic compounds using the standard methods. The results indicated that total organic carbon values were in the range of 0.01 to 84.13 mg/L with an average weighted value of 12.61 mg/L. Organic compounds were detected in only 9 regions, with 19.84% of the samples containing organic compounds. Only 96 wells (9.67%) showed contents of organic compounds above the safe limits. Pesticides were not detected in any of the well water samples. Overall, organic compounds were found in only 197 out of 993 wells (19.84%) in the whole country. Most of the wells containing organic compounds were located in residential, industrial, and agriculture areas. Riyadh region and Eastern Province were found to have the most affected wells as compared to other regions. Several regions did not show any organic compounds in the well waters. It can be said that the problem of groundwater contamination with organic compounds in Saudi Arabia is not acute and is manageable at present. It is, however, recommended that a regular monitoring of drinking water wells of all regions should be carried out by the competent authorities for organic compounds to know any contamination if and when it happens. Preventing such contaminants from reaching drinking water sources and protecting drinking water well heads from such contaminants remains a priority.

A silica-based network was used to immobilize ionic liquid-based ionogels and applied as a fiber coating for solid-phase microextraction (SPME). The ionogels were prepared by a sol-gel process, using two ionic liquids, triethylsulfonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Set(3)][TFSI]) and 1-butyl-1-methylpiperidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C(4)C(1)Pip] [TFSI]), as well as their equimolar mixture. Methyltrimethoxysilane was used as the sol-gel precursor, and trifluoroacetic acid as a reaction catalyst. The fabricated ionogel fibers were evaluated as sorbent coating in headspace SPME combined with gas chromatography with barrier ionization discharge detection for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The fibers showed a high affinity to aromatic VOCs, yielding good sensitivity and precision. Then, the developed method was applied to the analysis of aqueous samples. During the study, the main extraction parameters, i.e., salt concentration, extraction time, and temperature, were optimized for maximum fiber sorption and to maximize the enrichment factors. The average limits of detection were found to be 0.15 mu g L-1, 0.40 mu g L-1, and 0.07 mu g L-1, and the enrichment factors were in the 25700-61000, 33200-84700, and 29100-96500 ranges for [Set(3)], [C4C1 Pip] and [Set(3)/C4C1 Pip], respectively. The single fiber and fiber-to-fiber reproducibilities were below 11.2% and 30.6%, respectively. The results of this work suggest the possibility of fabricating selected extractants based on the physicochemical properties of the ionic liquids and target analytes.
