Hydrogels based on physically cross-linked network with high mechanical property and recasting ability

In this work, hydrogels based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), acrylamide (AM), calcium chloride, and t-carrageenan were prepared via radical polymerization followed by freezing and thawing process. Comparing with pure PVA hydrogels, the obtained hydrogels possess higher tensile strength (1.54 MPa), Young’s modulus (92 kPa), and breaking energy (5.14 MJ/m(3)) due to the synergistic effect of physical cross-linkers containing PVA crystallization, double helix structures of carrageenan and hydrogen bond. Furthermore, the tensile stress of the hydrogel is negligibly changeable after twenty successive loading-unloading tensile tests under different strain demonstrating good fatigue resistance. Effect of aging treatment on microstructure and corrosion behavior of Al-Zn-Mg aluminum alloy in aqueous solutions with different aggressive ions

The microstructure and corrosion behavior of Al-Zn-Mg alloy (namely 7xxx) after natural aging treatment (NAT) and artificial aging treatment (AAT) in aqueous NaCl solutions containing different aggressive ions have been investigated in current work. Results of microstructure characterization demonstrate that the aging treatment has a great influence on the grain size and precipitates. The grain size is relatively sizeable and no evident precipitates are observed in alloy after NAT comparable with that after AAT. The electrochemical corrosion behavior of alloy was studied by polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The corrosion potential (Ecorr) of the aluminum alloy is more negative in 3.5 wt.% NaCl containing 0.052 wt.% NaHSO3 solution than that in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solutions with or without 0.907 wt.% NaHCO3. Charge transfer resistance (Rct) results reveal that alloy after AAT has an enhancement of corrosion resistance compare with that after NAT. With the immersion time increasing, mostly pitting spreads over the surface of the alloy only in NaCl solution, whereas exfoliation corrosion mainly occurs in NaCl solutions containing NaHSO3 or NaHCO3. Highly porous ceramics production using slags from smelting of spent automotive catalysts

Spent automotive catalysts are the most crucial secondary resources of platinum group metals (PGMs). Currently, the iron-capturing method is one of the most promising technologies for PGMs recycling. The residual smelting slags contain large amounts of CaO, Al2O3, MgO, SiO2, Na2O, and the trace of heavy metals (e.g. Cr, Pb, Ni), which are classified as solid waste or even hazardous waste, which are typically treated by landfills, and poses severe threats to the environment. In this paper, based on the specific chemical composition of smelting slags, ceramic foams with high porosity, low density and good thermal insulation were fabricated by particle-stabilized foams method, where long-chain surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride served as the hydrophobic modifier of slag particles and colloidal silica as binding agent. Herein, the influence of sintering temperature and the amount of smelting slag on the physical properties of obtained porous ceramics were systematically investigated. The results showed that porous ceramics with a bulk density of 0.40-0.64 g/cm(3), open porosity of 74.7-83.4%, thermal conductivity of 0.10-0.21 W/(m.K) and compressive strength of 1.04-4.01 MPa can be obtained with the mass ratio of slag: colloidal silica of 2:1, 3:1 and 4:1 sintered at 1000 degrees C for 2 h. The porous ceramics with these unique properties are promising to be applied as thermal insulation materials. This convenient, facile and versatile approach is also expected to fabricate porous ceramics by using other solid waste as raw materials.

Sodium alginate/bismuth (III) oxide composites for gamma-ray shielding applications

In the present work, we have explored the efficacy of bismuth (III) oxide (Bi2O3) loaded, calcium ion cross-linked solution cast sodium alginate composite films for radioprotective applications. Calcium ion cross-linking increased the water and chemical resistance, which further improved on introduction of Bi2O3 into the composites. The 40 wt% Bi2O3 loaded films showed good heat resistance with the peak degradation temperature reaching as high as 251 degrees C. The Bi2O3 loaded composites showed enhanced tensile strength (TS) and Youngs modulus (YM). Compared to high-modulus polymers like epoxy, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC), these exhibit relatively greater extent of stretching before breaking. The gamma-ray attenuation experiments showed that mass attenuation coefficients of the composites at various gamma-ray energies increased with filler loading. These composites are effective in shielding gamma-rays from radioactive sources like Cs-137, Na-22, Ba-133, and Co-60 that are widely employed in several medical and industrial applications. The overall enhancement in thermal, mechanical, and radiation shielding characteristics of the composites may be attributed to the uniform distribution of the fillers in alginate matrix. These nontoxic sodium alginate/Bi2O3 composites can be used as soft and biodegradable radiation shields, which may be processed to wearable forms.

CREB1 protects against the renal injury in a rat model of kidney stone disease and calcium oxalate monohydrate crystals-induced injury in NRK-52E cells

Kidney stone disease (KSD) is a common urinary disease with increasing prevalence worldwide. In this study, we investigated the effect of cyclic AMP responsive element binding protein (CREB) 1 in a KSD model of rat and calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) crystals-treated NRK-52E cells. Rats were pretreated with lentivirus (LV)CREB1 vector or LV-control vector and administrated with ethylene glycol + ammonium chloride to induce KSD. It was found that CREB1 was activated in the renal tissue of non-treated KSD rats. Pretreating with LV-CREB1 vector significantly enhanced CREB1 expression in KSD rats. Biochemical analysis for serum and urine showed that upregulation of CREB1 could improve the renal function of KSD rats. Histological analysis confirmed that upregulation of CREB1 alleviated the renal injury in KSD rats. Moreover, the upregulation of CREB1 suppressed the apoptosis in renal tissue of KSD rats through regulating apoptosis-associated proteins. Further study showed that the upregulation of CREB1 could attenuate the oxidative stress in KSD rats as well. More interestingly, the upregulation of CREB1 enhanced the activity of complex I and complex III and the expression of mitochondrial cytochrome c, implicating the effect of CREB1 on improving mitochondrial function in KSD rats. In vitro study confirmed that upregulation of CREB1 inhibited the apoptosis and oxidative stress, while improved the mitochondrial function of NRK-52E cells treated with COM crystals, demonstrating the protective effect of CREB1 on COM crystals-induced renal epithelial cell injury. Therefore, CREB1 might be served as a promising target in the prophylaxis and treatment of KSD.

Genomic analysis of a functional haloacid-degrading gene of Bacillus megaterium strain BHS1 isolated from Blue Lake (Mavi Golu, Turkey)

Purpose: Bacillus megaterium strain BHS1, isolated from an alkaline water sample taken from Mavi Golu (Blue Lake, Turkey), can grow on minimal medium containing 2,2-dichloropropionic acid. We characterized this bacterium at the genomic level. Methods: The HiSeq platform was used to carry out genome sequencing, de novo assembly, and scaffolding with strain BHS1. Next, genome data were analyzed to demarcate DNA regions containing protein-coding genes and determine the function of certain BHS1 genes. Finally, results from a colorimetric chloride ion-release assay demonstrated that strain BHS1 produces dehalogenase. Results: De novo assembly of the BHS1 genomic sequence revealed a genome size of similar to 5.37 Mb with an average G+C content of 38%. The predicted nuclear genome harbors 5509 protein-coding genes, 1353 tRNA genes, 67 rRNA genes, and 6 non-coding (mRNA) genes. Genomic mapping of strain BHS1 revealed its amenability to synthesize two families of dehalogenases (Cof-type haloacid dehalogenase IIB family hydrolase and haloacid dehalogenase type II), suggesting that these enzymes can participate in the catabolism of halogenated organic acids. The mapping identified seven Na+/H+ antiporter subunits that are vital for adaptation of the bacterium to an alkaline environment. Apart from a pairwise analysis to the well-established L-2-haloacid dehalogenases, whole-cell analysis strongly suggested that the haloacid dehalogenase type II might act stereospecifically on L-2-chloropropionic acid, D,L-2-chloropropionic acid, and 2,2-dichloropropionic acid. Whole-cell studies confirmed the utilization of these three substrates and the gene’s role in dehalogenation. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first report of the full genome sequence for strain BHS1, which enabled the characterization of selected genes having specific metabolic activities and their roles in the biodegradation of halogenated compounds.

Using layered double hydroxides and anion exchange resin to improve the mechanical properties and chloride binding capacity of cement mortars

Chloride-induced corrosion results in the deterioration of concrete structures. To resolve this issue, two types of synthetic layered double hydroxides (LDHs) 2D nanoflakes based on CaFe-NO3 and CaFeAl-NO3 and a strongly basic anion exchange resin (SBAER) were developed for removing chloride ions from simulated sea sand (SSS) mortars. We investigated the combined effect of SSS mortars blended with chloride adsorbents using the response surface methodology (RSM). A Box-Behnken Design (BBD) was used to discuss the independent variables (CaFe-NO3 LDHs, CaFeAl-NO3 LDHs, and SBAER) and evaluate the response of compressive strength and free chloride content concerning admixture content. Experimental results showed that the free chloride content of the samples decreased upon the addition of LDHs and SBAER due to a synergistic effect, which resulted in the formation of LDHs-Cl, [N+(CH3)(3)Cl], Friedel’s salt (FS), and Kuzel’s salt (KS). The optimal range of the admixture content was determined to be 0.3-0.6 wt% CaFe-NO3 LDHs, 0.2-0.5 wt% CaFeAl-NO3 LDHs, and 0.2-0.5 wt% SBAER. In conclusion, LDHs and SBAER exhibited excellent chloride binding capacity, which makes them promising candidates for use as high-efficiency and stable chloride composite adsorbents in marine concrete. An Integrated HOCl-Producing E-Scaffold Is Active against Monomicrobial and Polymicrobial Biofilms

Oxidizing agents like hypochlorous acid (HOCl) have antimicrobial activity. We developed an integrated electrochemical scaffold, or e-scaffold, that delivers a continuous low dose of HOCl aimed at targeting microbial biofilms without exceeding concentrations toxic to humans as a prototype of a device being developed to treat wound infections in humans. In this work, we tested the device against 33 isolates of bacteria (including isolates with acquired antibiotic resistance) grown as in vitro biofilms alongside 12 combinations of dual-species in vitro biofilms. Biofilms were grown on the bottoms of 12-well plates for 24 h. An integrated e-scaffold was placed atop each biofilm and polarized at 1.5 V for 1, 2, or 4 h. HOCl was produced electrochemically by oxidizing chloride ions (Cl-) in solution to chlorine (Cl-2); dissolved Cl-2, spontaneously dissociates in water to produce HOCl. The cumulative concentration of HOCl produced at the working electrode in each well was estimated to be 7.89, 13.46, and 29.50 mM after 1, 2, and 4 h of polarization, respectively. Four hours of polarization caused an average reduction of 6.13 log(10) CFU/cm(2) (+/- 1.99 log(10) CFU/cm(2)) of viable cell counts of monospecies biofilms and 5.53 log(10) CFU/cm(2) (+/- 2.31 log(10) CFU/cm(2)) for the 12 dual-species biofilms studied. The described integrated e-scaffold reduces viable bacterial cell counts in biofilms formed by an array of antibiotic-susceptible and -resistant bacteria alone and in combination.

Optical sensing membrane for determination of trace cadmium(II), zinc(II) and copper(II) based on immobilization of 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol on polymer inclusion membrane

A colour changeable optical sensing membrane was prepared for quantitative detection of Cd(II), Zn(II) and Cu (II) by using polyvinyl chloride membrane containing bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate for chemical absorption of chromogenic reagent 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol. Under the optimum conditions, the three ions were measured by UV-visible spectrophotometer at lambda max = 547, 554 and 560 nm, respectively. The linear ranges of 8.90 x 10(-9)-8.90 x 10(-4) mol.L-1 [Cd(II)], 1.78 x 10(-9)-1.78 x 10(-4) mol.L-1 [Zn(II)] and 1.78 x 10(-7)-1.78 x 10(-3) mol.L-1 [Cu(II)] and detection limits of 3.89 x 10(-9), 3.42 x 10(-10) and 1.20 x 10(-7) mol.L-1 were obtained, respectively. The response time was between 7 and 15 min. For common anions and cations, the sensing membrane exhibited good selectivity. Selective determination of Cd(II), Zn(II) and Cu(II) was achieved by adding a suitable masking agent. The sensing membrane was regenerated by soaking in nitric acid for 1-3 min and maintained a stable response after three times of reuse. The sensing membrane was successfully used for the determination of Cd(II), Zn(II) and Cu(II) in real samples.
