The surface adsorption of bovine serum albumin in pure water and salted aqueous solutions was studied by neutron reflection. The performance of diatom indices in assessing temporal changes in water quality in a large lowland river ecosystem

Benthic diatoms are often included in bioassessment programs of river health as sensitive indicators of nutrient status and pollution. Many diatom-based indices have been developed and are frequently used to infer conditions in water quality. However, concerns have been raised regarding the robustness of these indices in riverine systems that have natural variability in environmental conditions, including seasonal change of water quality parameters, especially in terms of physical and chemical characteristics of water, which also influence diatom community composition. Here, we used three diatom-based indices (Diatom-based eutrophication/pollution index, EPI-D; Biological Diatom Index, IBD; Watanabe’s Index, WAT), which have previously been validated as robust for water quality assessment in China, to explore their response to temporal changes in water quality and diatom community structure in a riverine network over time. Concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N), total phosphorus (TP), temperature (t), and turbidity in April 2010 were significantly higher than in November 2007. The 141 diatom taxa we found in April 2010 were fewer than the 194 taxa we found in November 2007. On both occasions, the three diatom indices responded to same water quality variables (phosphorus and chloride or nitrogen) as reported in previous studies. Of the three diatom indices tested, EPI-D provided the most robust measure of natural seasonal changes in water quality and indicated the phosphorus and chloride. Our study confirms that these three diatom indices are effective for evaluating long-term water quality in large rivers.

Bacterial cellulose is a material with extraordinary properties that is gaining special interest for applications in the Food Industry. The excellent mechanical properties, thermal stability and barrier to water vapor, oxygen and UV radiation of bacterial cellulose compared to other polysaccharides make this material very attractive and a potential alternative to non-biodegradable synthetic materials. Nevertheless, bacterial cellulose films are limited due to their lower elasticity. Low-cost system for radiometric calibration of UAV-based multispectral imagery

This study evaluated the use of low-cost materials for radiometric calibration of multispectral images. Four materials were tested: plywood panels painted with matte paint (M1); plywood panels covered with synthetic nappa leather (M2); Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) panels (M3), and plywood panels covered with Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) canvas (M4). Heteroatom-doped porous carbons derived from lotus pollen for supercapacitors: Comparison of three activators

Facile preparation of carbon-based electrode materials with high specific surface area and controllable pore structure through a green and mild strategy is highly desirable for high-performance supercapacitors. Here, hierarchically porous carbon materials were prepared by three types of metal chlorides, including ZnCl2, FeCl3, and CuCl2. Compared with porous carbons obtained by traditional ZnCl2 or FeCl3 activation, hierarchically porous carbon obtained by a facile CuCl2 activation possessed higher yield, larger specific surface area, more developed hierarchical pore structure, and higher heteroatom contents. Benefiting from the synergy of unique morphology, hierarchical pore architecture with abundant micro-/mesopores and co-existence of numerous redox-active nitrogen and sulfur funtionalities, the as-prepared hierarchically porous carbon activated by CuCl2 exhibited superior electrochemical performance in aqueous electrolyte, including a large specific capacitance of 389.3 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1), excellent rate capability and good cycling stability in a three-electrode system. Moreover, the assembled carbon-based symmetric supercapacitor based on CuCl2-activated carbon electrode delivered a significantly increased energy density of 30.4 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 496.0 W kg(-1) in comparison to ZnCl2 or FeCl3-activated carbon electrodes. Corrosion performance, corrosion fatigue behavior and mechanical integrity of an extruded Mg4Zn0.2Sn alloy

Magnesium alloys are promising as load bearing components. They are inevitably exposed to cyclic loading and corrosive environment in actual service, which can consequently result in corrosion fatigue failure and loss of mechanical integrity of the material. Therefore, in the present study, the corrosion behavior, corrosion fatigue performance and mechanical integrity of an extruded Mg4Zn0.2Sn (wt.%) alloy were thoroughly studied in two corrosive electrolytes. Strong localized corrosion occurred when the alloy was immersed in deionized water based sodium chloride (NaCl) solution. The poor corrosion resistance of the alloy resulted in a fast deterioration of the tensile properties after pre-exposure to salt spray and a poor fatigue resistance in deionized water based NaCl solution. In comparison, the active dissolution of the substrate was sufficiently suppressed in artificial tap water based NaCl solution due to the formation of highly protective corrosion product layers. This consequently conferred longer fatigue life on the alloy in the electrolyte. Our results emphasized the influence of corrosion on the fatigue behavior and tensile properties of magnesium alloys. Ecofriendly renewable hydrogels based on whey protein and for slow release of fertilizers and soil conditioning

Hydrogels show potential in agriculture for overcoming issues associated with conventional fertilizers and irrigation. The hydrogels were prepared by a heat-set process, applying calcium chloride as the cross-linking agent. The fertilizer was loaded into the hydrogel during the preparation stage to heighten loading efficiency. Investigation was made into the impact of alginic acid content on morphology, swelling behaviour encompassing repeated swelling-drying cycles, and water retention in soil under different pH conditions. The loading capacity and release of urea from the hydrogels were studied, and the data processed in accordance with a mathematical model to discern any correlation between the structure of the hydrogel, the presence of alginic acid and the release mechanism. Improvement of 3D printability of buckwheat starch-pectin system via synergistic Ca2+-microwave pretreatment

Synergistic calcium chloride and microwave heating treatment was applied to improve the rheological properties and printability of a model buckwheat starch-high-methoxy pectin (BP) gel system. Rheological property results suggested that sole microwave heating significantly improved the plasticity, while synergetic treatment significantly decreased the viscosity of the gel. Microwave heating weakened the hydrogen bonding within the gel. On the other hand, synergistic treatment caused an aggregation through cross-linkage between Ca2+ and amide group within the gel; this in turn resulted in the discharge of part of water bound to gel matrix and hence the lower viscosity of the gel. Printing experiments revealed that synergistic pretreatment for 30 s could significantly improve the printing precision of the gel when compared with that of the gel sample steamed for 30 min.
