A carrier transport layer and its interfacial effects on an organometal halide perovskite light harvesting layer play an influential factor in either photovoltaic performance or long-term stability of a perovskite solar cell (OHPSC). Although the understandings of the carrier transport layers and interfacial effects on regular structured OHPSCs have been explored, knowledge of an interface between hole transport layer of NiOx and perovskite in an inverted OHPSC is still necessary to be developed. Here, we performed a universal NiOx film with the sequential passivation strategy of NiCl2 (SPS-NiCl2 treatment) for either wide bandgap or narrow bandgap of OHPSCs. The SPS-NiCl2 treated NiOx film not only implements the passivation at the perovskite layer/NiOx film interface but also confers itself a gradient energy level of valance band inducing by chloride. Comprehensive characterizations reveal that the SPS-NiCl2 treated NiOx film suppresses non-radiative recombination at the interface and enlarges the splitting of the quasi-Fermi level at the interfaces. The photoconversion efficiency (PCE) of the champion device comprised of the SPS-NiCl2 treated NiOx film can achieve 19.53% with a record V-oc of 1.16 V, the lowest V-oc deficit of 390 mV in NiOx based inverted OHPSCs. The corresponding devices with encapsulation also exhibit superior long-term stability, and over 80% of initial PCE can be maintained after 1500 h damp-heat test. This study sheds the light on managing the interfacial issues of an inverted OHPSC and offers a feasible path to develop a universal hole transport layer for perovskite layers with different energy bandgap.

Comparing desorption properties of pollutants on bentonite particles and in compacted bentonite

Desorption is one of the main factors causing groundwater and soil pollution. Therefore, the study of clay desorption characteristics is important for the prediction of groundwater and soil pollution. In previous studies, batch tests and column tests were used to study the desorption characteristics of pollutants on clay. However, the desorption parameters obtained via the two test methods were often quite different. To investigate differences in the desorption characteristics of different pollutants on clay particles and in compacted clay, batch and column desorption tests were conducted using cadmium chloride, fulvic acid, and sodium phosphate as the adsorbates and bentonite as the adsorbent. It was found that the unit particle surface area desorption distribution coefficients of pollutants on bentonite particles were approximately equal to the unit pore surface area distribution coefficients of pollutants in compacted bentonite. This indicates that the desorbed amount per unit of surface area is basically consistent, regardless of whether they are sorbed on particles or in compacted bentonite. A simple formula for determining the desorption retardation factor of pollutants in compacted bentonite is presented. The results of this study provide a reference for the prediction and evaluation of groundwater and soil pollution.

The (in)dependency of blood and sweat sodium, chloride, potassium, ammonia, lactate and glucose concentrations during submaximal exercise

Purpose To reduce the need for invasive and expensive measures of human biomarkers, sweat is becoming increasingly popular in use as an alternative to blood. Therefore, the (in)dependency of blood and sweat composition has to be explored. Methods In an environmental chamber (33 degrees C, 65% relative humidity; RH), 12 participants completed three subsequent 20-min cycling stages to elicit three different local sweat rates (LSR) while aiming to limit changes in blood composition: at 60% of their maximum heart rate (HRmax), 70% HRmax and 80% HRmax, with 5 min of seated-rest in between. Sweat was collected from the arm and back during each stage and post-exercise. Blood was drawn from a superficial antecubital vein in the middle of each stage. Concentrations of sodium, chloride, potassium, ammonia, lactate and glucose were determined in blood plasma and sweat. Results With increasing exercise intensity, LSR, sweat sodium, chloride and glucose concentrations increased (P <= 0.026), while simultaneously limited changes in blood composition were elicited for these components (P >= 0.093). Sweat potassium, lactate and ammonia concentrations decreased (P <= 0.006), while blood potassium decreased (P = 0.003), and blood ammonia and lactate concentrations increased with higher exercise intensities (P = 0.005; P = 0.007, respectively). The vast majority of correlations between blood and sweat parameters were non-significant (P > 0.05), with few exceptions. Conclusion The data suggest that sweat composition is at least partly independent of blood composition. This has important consequences when targeting sweat as non-invasive alternative for blood measurements.

The Impact Of Foliar Salicylic Acid In Salt-Exposed Guava (Psidium Guajava L.) Seedlings

The rising demand for guava fruit worldwide is due to its richness in vitamin C, high yielding and two bearing seasons. Given the salt stress threat to guavas and the necessity of protective strategies, in the present research guava seedlings were subjected to sodium chloride (0 and 50 mM) and salicylic acid (0 and 1 mM). To ascertain a logical conclusion, the activity of antioxidant enzymes, antioxidant capacity of DPPH, ferric reducing antioxidant power, total flavonoid and phenol contents were monitored in salt-exposed guava seedlings. Based on our findings, the most superoxide dismutase (87.46 mu mol min(-1)g(-1)DW) activity, ferric reducing antioxidant power (408.82 mmol g(-1) DW), DPPH scavenging activity (80.65%), flavonoid (14.15 mg QE(-1) g DW) and phenol (34.02 mg GAE g(-1) DW) contents were found in 50 mM NaCl-exposed plants, which were enriched by 1 mM salicylic acid. A high correlation was observed among non-enzymatic antioxidant parameters (DPPH scavenging activity, ferric reducing antioxidant power, total flavonoid content and total phenol content). In conclusion, salicylic acid improved guavas salt tolerance by increasing both enzymatic (peroxidase and superoxide dismutase) and non-enzymatic (ferric reducing antioxidant power, DPPH scavenging activity, total phenol and flavonoid contents) pathways.

Concentrating brine for lithium recovery using GO composite pervaporation membranes

The extraction process of highly demanded lithium from brine normally starts with a solar evaporation pond to increase the lithium concentration, which takes more than a year and is weather-dependent. This work evaluated the enrichment of lithium from salt lake brine using graphene oxide (GO) composite pervaporation membrane with the crystallizer unit. The deposition of stacked GO layer on the commercially available hydrophobic membranes can tackle the membrane wetting and salt crystallization issues. The initial water flux was 11 L/m(2) h at 70 degrees C, which was 20 times higher than that of solar evaporation pond (similar to 0.5 L/m(2) h) and 10 times lower footprint. With high initial feed concentration (>200 g/L of salt) the GO composite pervaporation membrane increased lithium concentration from 0.3 to 1.27 g/L (73% feed volume reduction). Assuming 10 m(3)/day capacity of the proposed solar pervaporation system, an economic analysis showed that the technique is not economically sustainable when solely aiming at the lithium extraction, while it becomes competitive with the traditional method when aiming at simultaneously producing deionized water and lithium. A payback time of 3.6-27 years is achievable with the sale price of water and LiOH at US$ 0.3-1 per 20 L and US$ 20 per kg, respectively. A continuous process is also possible with backup gas heater and waste heat.

Cellulose nanocrystalline hydrogel based on a choline chloride deep eutectic solvent as wearable strain sensor for human motion

Owning to the viscoelastic properties, good biocompatibility and high strain sensitivity, choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvent (DES) hydrogels have been considered to be promising wearable strain sensors for human motion. However, traditional hydrogels are far away from the wearable strain sensor applications caused by their unsatisfied conductivity and weak mechanical properties. Herein, the strategy for functional ionic inorganic/organic interpenetrating (IPN) hydrogels preparation by cyclic freezing/thawing method was successfully developed. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was proposed to dissolve in choline chlorede-based DES as hydrogel matrix for the first time. Encouragingly, the obtained DES/PVA/CNCs/g-C3N4 hydrogel (choline chloride with glucose) exhibits excellent mechanical properties, included excellent tensile strength (approximate to 2.55 MPa), high elongation (approximate to 1200 %) and satisfactory tensile modulus (approximate to 3.65 MPa). Interestingly, the thermal diffusivity (the maximum value was 0.675 W/mK) and conductivity (the maximum value was 0.18 mm(2)/s) of the DES-hydrogels were successfully achieved through adding graphitic-like nitride nanosheet (g-C3N4) and sustainable cellulose nanocrystalline (CNCs). These enhancements were attributed to the synergistic interactions of powerful hydrogen bonding among DES, CNCs, g-C3N4 and PVA chains. More importantly, the as-prepared hydrogels have the potential as a human motion sensor to accurately in-situ detect human activities on the fingers, wrists, elbows and knee joints. Those hydrogel-type strain sensors with flexibility, excellent mechanical properties, self-recovery, good heat transfer, and electrical conductivity have broad application prospects in the fields of intelligent robot, bionic prostheses, and human care areas.

Comparative evaluation of integrated purification pathways for bacterial modular polyomavirus major capsid protein VP1 to produce virus-like particles using high throughput process technologies

Modular virus-like particles and capsomeres are potential vaccine candidates that can induce strong immune responses. There are many described protocols for the purification of microbially-produced viral protein in the literature, however, they suffer from inherent limitations in efficiency, scalability and overall process costs. In this study, we investigated alternative purification pathways to identify and optimise a suitable purification pathway to overcome some of the current challenges. Among the methods, the optimised purification strategy consists of an anion exchange step in flow through mode followed by a multi modal cation exchange step in bind and elute mode. This approach allows an integrated process without any buffer adjustment between the purification steps. The major contaminants like host cell proteins, DNA and aggregates can be efficiently removed by the optimised strategy, without the need for a size exclusion polishing chromatography step, which otherwise could complicate the process scalability and increase overall cost. High throughput process technology studies were conducted to optimise binding and elution conditions for multi modal cation exchanger, Capto (TM) MMC and strong anion exchanger Capto (TM) Q. A dynamic binding capacity of 14 mg ml(-1) was achieved for Capto (TM) MMC resin. Samples derived from each purification process were thoroughly characterized by RP-HPLC, SEC-HPLC, SDS-PAGE and LC-ESI-MS/MS Mass Spectrometry analytical methods. Modular polyomavirus major capsid protein could be purified within hours using the optimised process achieving purities above 87% and above 96% with inclusion of an initial precipitation step. Purified capsid protein could be easily assembled in-vitro into well-defined virus-like particles by lowering pH with addition of calcium chloride to the eluate. High throughout studies allowed the screening of a vast design space within weeks, rather than months, and unveiled complicated binding behaviour for Capto (TM) MMC. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. Environmental applications of a biodegradable cysteine-based surfactant

An improved method has been developed for the efficient synthesis of octanoyl-cysteine in single-chain form (N-octanoyl-cys) which operates as a surfactant over a wide pH range, is easily decomposed into natural products and has a high product yield. The compound offers an environmentally acceptable agent for the adsorption of a range of heavy metals from contaminated waters/soils, and it could also be used in general household detergents or personnel-cleaner formulations, and even in toothpastes. The surfactant was used as a co-surfactant for flotation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a per/poly-fluoroalkyl substance (PFAS). The new surfactant produced significant foaming and removed 70% of the PFOA after 30min of foam fractionation. The compound is also potentially useful in facilitating the release of PFAS compounds; these are negatively charged and often bound to charged particles in sand, clay, and humic-acid-coated materials and microorganisms via bridging multivalent ions, such as Ca2+, Mg2+, Al3+ and Fe3+ , as well as a range of other heavy-metal ions present in soil to varying degrees. In soils (and also in contaminated water), the common chelating agent EDTA is often used to encapsulate these ions (e.g. Ca2+, the dominant ion in soil) at moderately high pH to aid in the release of the bound PFAS compounds. However, it would be more environmentally acceptable to use this new biodegradable surfactant, which could combine chelation with foam-fractionation separation of surface-active (e.g. PFAS) components in soils.
